Thanks Kev Ouch! It appears to be JDM or Austalian - 88/89 model GT-R (The UK model has different fenders) JDM has a 180km speedo, Oz will be a 240km speedo I don't see an aerial on the LHR fender, so pretty sure it's a JDM import sold in Zimbabwe around 1995 with 100 000km+. (Jap cars are exported at 100 000km or the taxes go up) I can help with parts but there's no paypal in RSA? Where are you? I even have new graphix for the car and seat covers Tell us how you got the car and why it's been raped (rear prang?) Your one saving grace is that there are plenty of Camry SV 2.2L and 3L V6's around, those cars share a lot of engine/box and suspension/brake parts. Fuel tank, sender & pump is also the same The Camry V6 brakes & box are a good upgrade on these cars Need to see pics of the motor/chassis plate, mirror switch, gauges etc PLEASE DON'T TELL ME IT'S A TEMS!, I see the TEMS style rear shock covers and wires
its an austrailian..... the front fender indicators only came in usa and aus.... and the fact its also RHD so its an australian car!
Sorry Sean, 50c bet says you're wrong :lol2 Dash dimmer is missing (JDM) Seat pattern - OZ has stripey seats or plain grey Speedo looks like this? (JDM) No sign of a aerial? (JDM) Front lenses are darker (JDM) I'll stick my neck out and guess the rev counter looks like this - Speedo comes from an Australian car, dials I modded myself and the mirror switch looks like this Side mirrors have no "E" mark Lets see, but I'm pretty convinced it's a JDM TEMS which escaped the NZ slaughterhouse and landed in Zimbabwe instead. (All cars at that time in Zim were JDM imports or 2nd hand RSA cars - thanks to Mr Mugabe)
I am in south africa johannesburg would like mod the rear end with skyline taillights r33 yes its got tems on car papers 89 model 20lt motor will take photos of plates and motor then my friend to post it for me on the clocks 240km and no aerial on it sit on rear glass
Dear God no - you realize that this is one of 3 known TEMS cars - IN THE WORLD? I have one and and in the last 2 years have found only one other - an auto belonging to a lady (Lynn) in NZ (I think it's gone now btw). There are plenty of ST162's but you have landed one of the rarest cars in the world, according to the "experts" it didn't exist untill I started showing pics on the internet 2yrs ago. You will not find any reference, wiring diagrams, part numbers etc for this car anywhere. Since when did you get R33's in SA? Why do you want it to look like a Datsun?
Please do not mod that TEMS car. As Stig said, there's only 3 known to exist. Restore it to stock specs please!! D:
when i saw it for sale I fell in love with it and bought it for cheap and will try to make it one of best toyota celica around starting on the body for now and thanks for all you guys for helping along by the way i made a mistake the clocks only go up to 180km it's sound like a jdm if i have to restore it back to stock i will need some original spares like taillights for now and on got them out there stig mate do you really mean that this car is the only one in sa and only 3 in the world still around?
Ya boet I guess there's more 162's lying around in scrapyards in Zim but the TEMS was a "special order" LTD ed model. Nobody knows how many were made - yet, but we'll find out someday. They sold for nearly twice the price of a normal ST162 - 2nd hand mine sold for $17 000 (R110 000) in 1995. It cost more than the cabriolet and even the GT4 turbo new, it is rarer than the white lightning and the IMSA Alltrak. My car is insured for R120 000, and who knows what it could be worth in the future as the Gen4 aren't even considered collectable yet. I scrapped 2 other cars to build one TEMS, I lost count how many other cars have donated to the project. It's not about the money, it's in owning something unique and having pride in your work. There are rumours of a few sold in Dubai/Saudi but sofar nothing to back it up. You are welcome to google TEMS and see what comes up - all you will find is stuff I've posted and the models more commonly found with it - Supra, ST182, Cressida, Soarer, AE86 etc I have notices out all over the web looking for this model, sofar only one other car was found in Palmerston North, NZ and I believe the lady has now scrapped it This site is far the biggest and best Gen4 resource in the world, any gen4 owner will tell you that Bad news is the shocks went bad 15yrs ago and there are no replacements. Toyota simply never made spares for this car, my guess is so few were made it wasn't worth the effort. Toyota JPN now regards the 162-5 as obsolete and can only supply what spares are still on the shelves. Last year I couldn't even order shims for this motor - there aren't any! I'd be saving up to get the car restored properly (rust in places you haven't seen yet), a new suspension, respray etc. The motor is tired, the box will need a re-con soon, the mounts and bushes will need replacing, seats need recovering etc. It's going to take a lot of money and effort to restore the car properly, even here parts are becoming scarcer by the day. The car is unique enough, why mess with it? Besides every change you make will de-value it further. Leave the customizing to the Kadett, Golf & Uno boyz, they will NEVER have what you already have You are very fortunate the car is intact, every hotrod racer in SA has been after that motor for the last 2 decades How much? Where did you find it?
Got it from a friend here in jhb our motor mechanic and it was just standing there at his workshop which he had bought from a scrapyard.I saw it there and asked if he would sell it to me which he did for R12 000
Thats about $2000US which is a little high but considering its all there and running it's not bad. What area are you in? Do yourself a favour and look up IMSA GTO 87-89, Team Toyota Europe (TTE) before doing anything to the car Here's a taste - Pikes Peak 5th gen, botches the start & sets a record - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5WfSZBPosI&NR=1 Safari 4th gen in it's element - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooA2zsAgxj8&NR=1 Del Mar GTO's, unbelievable handling - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HuFiUz5zZA Portland GTO's, straight line speed (were they really backing off?, looks like it) - http://vimeo.com/7167592
I am into spraypainting and Panelbeating.Worked in australia and lived there for a year, as a spraypainter on holdens in Victorian smash repairs,Melbourne dandenong area. So getting this baby back to shape should not be a problem only looking for 1 taillight which will be the R/hand side found one on e-bay but we don't have paypal that's why I wanted to a diff mod to the rear-end on it.
Here's my TEMS plate, I think yours is a sister car so the model, motor, trim, plant etc should be the same? The 692 box is a 4.2 diff ratio, has been replaced with a later box and 3.9 ratio. My interior was blue/blue but yours looks black/blue
stig I will take some more photos tomorrow it does look very much the same then will post them thanks Any luck on taillight yet? And maybe some aftermarket s/skirts?
