I really can't believe how clean the motor and trans are. I've been working on my budget built garage special of a motor refresh and thinking it wasn't too shabby (because in all fairness it's not) but damn! It just looks so very nice! Gonna be quite the car after you're done shaking down and maybe get that manifold on too.

    Very nice!

    holy crap i need struts!!!!

-got her runnung today. runs great but still has a few issues i need to work through. not sure if the fuel gauge works, as the light is always on. i have some high pitched noise from the bay, but i dont think its the motor. sounds like the alt belt is too tight??? the struts are wasted, like not even functional wasted. my car handles like a boat, even with the polys ect. it feels tight yet boaty. so next on the list is to get the new manifold (arrived today) wraped and fitted. and then by struts and get an alignment. the rear brakes are dragging a bit so i think i need to grease the slides and either have the rotors turned or wait till the rust goes away naturally.

-i have to say i was hoping for a bit more out of her but im thinking the struts alone may do it. it feels a bit rough up to 3K then smooths right out and is very happy to rev high. tvis is much less noticeable compared to 09, that or there is an issue there. ill have to look into it.

-i was having a pretty good amount of steam comming out when idling/reving in my garage but after a bit of spirited driving its gone away. seemed like an odd amount to be built up in the system but MAY have been. i will be keeping a very close eye on the coolant level though. at 200 miles im planning on doing the first oil change, swapping the valve covers, re-checking head torque, ect, this will probably also be when i do the manifold. but will be keeping a very close eye on it in the mean time.

Sounds good - recheck cam timing, could be the source of the low end problem.

Drive it gently and let things settle, it hasn't run in a while so maybe needs time to clean
& lube the TVIS, AFM, TB etc

You sure the TVIS is working?

Re: Re: project "what the hell did i do?" motor and tranny

-i got some pics tonight, will post them tomorrow as i still have to load the stuff for my camera on my new laptop.

-yeah i think i am going to have to double check the timing. pretty sure its right, but you never know.

-unsure about the tvis, i know 09's was obvious. this one not so much. iirc the quick check was just to unplug the tvis vac line?

-i will say the head/cam covers get noticably hotter. like you cant touch the covers after i quick cruise. is that a cam thing or do i need to look in further? youll see the wire cover job to the alt wires. the wire cover is being melted by the heat off the valve covers.(not even touching them). i think tomorrow ill pull the covers. oil pressure and temp readings are all normal and working.

It sounds like a hybrid engine... a mixture of new and old. Once everything breaks in, and all the fine tuning is finished, I'm sure it will all settle in and be the mad beast it was intended...

The heat thing is the one thing that's a little funny... it could be caused by the TVIS not working correctly, not flowing air correctly... sounds like it would make sense to me.... :eek5

Covers get too hot to hold but shouldn't melt stuff...

You sure you got oil to the head?
    H/G not in upside down?
    Air in the water?

    it was late btw.

-yeah stig ill pop the covers today. id imagine if i wasnt gettin oil id already have a bigger issue. iirc the h.g. would only go on one way. and coolant level is good/ hoses are firm.
-also need to check the tvis still.

-anyone else seen that trim bit below the door? this is not the usuall gt-s type that covers the running boards.

Heads surprisingly can run on very little oil, but you'd hear the tappet sound by now.

Can't see the trim in the dark. There's 4 Toyota types I know of
1)Thin black tin covered in plastic (rust prone, JDM GT/GT-R)

    2)Thick black stainless (JDM GT4, US GT-S)

    3)Alltrac plastic
    [IMG]

    4)TRD fiberglass

Re: Re: project "what the hell did i do?" motor and tranny

ill get a better pic of it for ya.

-also im wondering if it isnt a fuel issue. it takes a suprising number of cranks to get going and im pretty sure the spark is good as its not missing. new fuel filter and remaned injectors. fuel light is always on, on the gauge seems to go up and down at will. im thinking fuel pump or pressure regulator or something.

-edit: no ecu code and system reads normal.

You may have low fuel pressure - pump?
The light I think is a stuck sensor in the tank

Re: project "what the hell did i do?" motor and tranny in

kinda what im starting to think. ive yet to have this issue so im not quite sure the symptoms, but this would seem logical to me. ill have to go throught it with the bgb this week.

-atleast i was able to get the car out and clean the floor of my garage. :D im sick of going to the store with cig butts stuck to my back :mrgreen

-with the suspension in the shape its in im not gonna daily it until thats adressed, so ill have time to look into the other stuff.

-stig, i feel i need a proper razing for this one so here goes. i had to swap the p.s. side axle seal. swapped it out no problem. it of course spooged out oil, i guess i didnt think it would be that much. so i just popped it back in and put about 30 miles on it this weekend. :roll i was excited what can i say. i knew it needed oil, so finally today i went to fill it.....uhhhh 2.25q later it was full. ooops. :roll

Good to hear you got er running  Not sure why it's running so hot, stuck t-stat? retarded timing?
On the struts, if they've been beat-on for a while (like my GT-S) the springs are probably shot also.
Might as well grab some springs too :sad5
