I don't think so... This happened on a fresh build, and new shims... too tight
As engines get miles on them, they wear ans the gap gets bigger...
Newly built engines can kinda go either way... adjust as break in commences...
Shimming the valves..... IT SUCKS !!!! :banghead

Re: project "what the hell did i do to the exhaust?

-hmmm i may have to look into this....went to fire it this morning and i though it wasnt going to get it started at all. just kept cranking and eventually it went.

-stig, the pressure was at 41 on the old one, throught all the diagnostic stages. e.g. w/ and w/o vacume, ect. when i took it off i sprayed some brake clean in it and it poured out all the holes. the new one (junk yard from an 89) also read 41 but changed through out the test as normall. all ranges were 3 psi high, so i was thinking the gauge was off.....? but now im thinking maybe not.

-rick, how did you diagnose that? just a feeler?

-i removed all the old cruddy tint today, so she's loosing a bit of the dogness. i did f' up 1 thing. the aluminum crosmember mounts were squeeking the other day so i thightened them, drove around all weekend and it slowly came back. went to tighten them up "once and for all", and of course snapped the bolt off in the front. oooooppps. new project for tomorrow.

-edit: had to re-read ricks. yeah my issue is only when its cold. if its run at all that day she starts great. i will say that the gas is much much more responsive now. im really amazed at what changing that thing did. i have also replaced the cold start injector time switch with a junkyard one to no avail....i hate using junkyard sensors ect, cause who knows if there not bad aswell. those two bits are f'n insane new.

Re: project "what the hell did i do to the exhaust?

Warm non starts are easier to diagnose. You need to check compression etc.
Ya, I've had strange stuff happening with my shims on the new motor, set them one day and the next it's all changed.
A slight miss at idle on the new motor will indicate wrong shims as well as the head sounding tight.
Miss will get worse as it warms up

As both were 3psi over, I would put that to the gauge. An extra 3psi is a good thing anyways.

Did you try another cold start injector?

FE's are the same setup but the shims are bigger, same size as on the Gen2 GE

Easy on the crossmember bolts - they strip easy!
I'd try some gasket material between the member/body to stop the noise from the alu bushings.

Re: project "what the hell did i do to the exhaust?

-good idea on the gasket material stig! i was comming up blank on something to use.

-came out easy with vice grips. replaced with a 10.9 grade bolts and added lock washers and red locktite. torqued to 80lbs. too much ? :roll it doesnt squeek for the moment, if it starts up again ill go with the gasket material.

-i checked my csi today and double checked a spare, both read good. went to start and it fired right up. ??? maybe a bad connection to the csi or maybe i didnt have it connected all the way after the pressure check. i do hear a very slight tick at the head, so i may have the machine shop check it out. they said if i had any issues theyd fix it....i paid like $150 or $250 to have it all shimmed correctly w/ the new cams. there good guys so if there is an issue im sure theyd take care of it.

-heres a pic with the old tint removed and my new $10 dollar antenna....i dont even have a stereo yet but the crusty antenna hole/tore up chrome bits were bugging the crap outta me.

Re: project "what the hell did i do to the exhaust?

I think those alu bushings are a race-only option, solid mounts are always noisy, loosen
& re-tighten the front mount to relieve any pressure. Engine may be sitting funny.

Nice, some paint retouching and she'll be all new!! You know I have a thing for black Celi's

You need the JDM wing corner or block it up and one of those internal aerials

I'm lovin the GT4 bumper & kit, makes it look sooo much more aggressive

Re: Re: project "what the hell did i do to the exhaust?

-well i retract my earlier statements on the cold start deal. did it again after work tonight. ?????

-the car runs awesome though. very very happy with it. still have quite a few rattles, squeeks, ect to work out....anyone know what the right rear "steel drum" sounding occasional knock is? its driving me nuts. very seldom (big bumps) but loud. 09 had the same one i swear.

-ive decided to fab my own rear strut brace at some point just for fun.

-think a kaminari may be in my future :naughty

    -to do.
--stereo. im not a huge stereo/music guy so i want something that matches the red dash lights more than something that sounds nice.
--alarm. may just do the fuel cut switch.
---have all windows pulled and the blemishis (small rust spots) fixed, the resealed. gonna have the guy figure out the front windows aswell.
    ---then for tint
    ---then kit/re-spray.
    ---wheels/tires.

-ive kinda decided that i need to budget myself on this a little better, so im gonna slow it down a bit. id really like to just get some miles on it and work out any bugs. i know the wheels i want, but may just check c.l. everyday and see if i cant get a good deal on something i like. id be nice to do stuff like the strut brace and see what i can do.

Re: project "what the hell did i do to the exhaust?

Check your rear silencer and tank, I think it may be the exhaust banging something
anti roll could be another culprit

Whenever mine did that I told people it was the sound barrier catching up :hehe

EhErm, the never ending to-do list - mine keeps getting longer and just to add fuel tonite I was offered
a Gen2 motor for $150 and I hear the local Toyota yard wants to offer me a job. :help

Re: jwagner's project: "what the hell did i do to the stereo

-let me first start by saying, i could care less about the stereo at this point. im not really a stereo guy anyway so i just went ultra cheap so i had something. the land cruiser has alpine head and speakers....ive always been an alpine guy, but the head unit in my truck cost more than double what i just paid for this whole "system"

    -panisonic head
    -jvc 4" fronts
    -jensen rear 6x9'S + boxes.

-total cost $202. i know, you get what you pay for, but theres a ton of other stuff on the list and the stereo is right down at the bottom.

-i actually cared more that it had red lights than what it sounds like. i wanted it to match with the led's. youll also notice that i swapped the a/c control backlights AND button lights (re-solderd). only issue is since there led's they dont dim, its either off or on. there is also no way to change the clock, as its a sealed type thingy.
-installed the first bit of the strut bar (welded) eventually ill make it a 3pt. bar. you can see the plate they will mount to on top of where the rear seat was.

Re: jwagner's project: "what the hell did i do to the stereo

we've been calling it "the dog"...

-not the exhaust, it did have some clunking from that but i sorted it the day it was put on. it sounds like something either on top of the tank or some of the rear bushings are shot. in the front i think the cv's are toast, there not clicking but are making some clunks ect.
-ok the 6x9's suck.....big time. i think im gonna spend a bit more cash on a better set this weekend. ill see what a $100 dollar set sounds like. they wouldnt be bad if i didnt have to have the volume at 47 on the freeway to be louder than the car.

Re: jwagner's project: "what the hell did i do to the stereo

Jwagner, I'm really intrigued bout the CSI and the clanking noise for I have the same exact problems...

    Same exact two...

Already got 3 different CSIs and modified my exhaust at least 3 times already and sure does sound like it's coming from that location...

I hope you figure it out soon for I've tried to no avail

Same here as well, some good clunking in my left CV as well as another clunking around that area as well with the suspension.

Re: jwagner's project: "what the hell did i do to the stereo

Sounds like the speakers are too big for the radio amp?
If the speakers are 300w+ - chances are the speakers aren't getting the oomf they need.
For a 50w+50w radio, you'd get better response with something in the 120-200w range.

I have 5" 150w speakers in the stock boxes and with the 55w+55w amp there's no problem, but I did
install a seperate 360w Sony Xplod amp for the 6.5" 280w speakers I have in the boot cover.

For the clunking, jack the rear up on tresles. Get underneath and get violent with the exhaust, tank,
anti roll etc - you'll soon see what's banging.
