they swear by it here for steel to eat into it and prevent water getting under it...

Yes, that is what I believed the last 30yrs.
According to the guy the "etch" has a type of acid which only works with aluminium. I know it sounds far fetched and wondered if anyone else had heard this?
The guy is a top lab tech at Dulux and his recommendation is to use iron oxide as a primer

Apart from surface rust it looks to me like our cars are rusting from the INSIDE out, I'm struggling to find a rear hatch which doesnt show signs of major rust inside

The sailors use grease, iron oxide and fish oil to stop rust on ships, I sprayed the interior panels, beams etc with fish oil 3yrs ago and I can tell you there has been NO further rust in any of those areas and I haven't had a garage or carport in that time

If you read the link below it mentions steel before aluminium... I think myself he's wrong, Acid etch is well known by painters as a primer to lay over rusted or cleaned off steel

    http://www.u-pol.com/documents/datasheets/tds/ACID8AL-TDS-EN.pdf

I agree that iron oxide is a great primer for bare steel also, but as any of us know our cars are prone to rust...
My motto is Do it once, do it right... Might not always have worked out for me but its the approach im taking with this car.

I plan on using this stuff and spray it on all cavitys
    [IMG]

then doing the same with this stuff, also putting it on the bottom of the car
    [IMG]

and finally a coat of this on the base of the car

I fully agree with that info in my last 20 years as a panelbeater and business man never have I had any problem's I also agree with Kevin it's work's best on aluminium but bare panel is where we use it on and that's steel fish oil is a good option for rust proof from inside out of the panel's I say you will be fine using the way you are. There are so many product's in our day's which you can never keep up with in anyway. The bottom line of all this is if you do not cut it out you will all way's going to have rust the product's prolong's live like I said before rust is like aid's
    it can only be prolonged.

Spent most of last night coughing up paint. Not worth a crap , so i was in town today and i got this. modeled by the ever so wonderful kim

Had a huge WIN today, My uncle gave me an old tool chest which i thought was empty so i started to clean it out and all that was in it were three air tools, a Die grinder, air ratchet 3/8 , and a palm sander...
I set them up and checked them on the compressor and it was a no go, they were all totally seized. I was sitting inside and i just thought ill try and unsieze them , i stripped down the air ratchet and cleaned any rust i could find all over it . Put it back together and off it went like the day it left the factory, did the same with the die grinder and the palm sander , there air motors were stuck so they couldn't spin and the ratchet end was stuck in the air ratchet. got them all freed out and fed them air tool oil for about 20 min each and they kept getting more and more power, my neighbor called over also and gave me a carbide tip for grinding all i can say it WOW! the speed that thing can grind down steel is amazing and it doesn't wear at all! so im pretty happy with my add on's to the collection! doesn't get much better than finding little gems like this.

Also, what does everybody use as air tool oil, i used to use ATF but i spotted the genuine stuff and said id better get it...

So i spotted this today in my uncles workshop while i was painting , Yes its a sandblaster! so now my job should be made ten times easier, There was a second setup he had and I'm going to copy it and make my own sandblasting booth, Its quiet simple so it should be good when I'm finished but for the meantime i have this bad boy to work with :wink

thats why i was thinking of just building a cabinet so i could blast all the parts in it... That or just do it outside on the gravel. The only parts ill be blasting is rusty bits and welded parts.

    Windscreen trim removal

I did an awful amount of studying the trim for the windscreen before i toke it out because i didn't want to have to go getting loads of clips for it so what needs to be done is get a Flathead screwdriver not too big and then lift the trim on the side your removing, This will allow enough room to see the clip. Press the corner of the clip with the screwdriver on the side your lifting and it should pull out. I managed to remove all the trim from around the windscreen without breking any of the clips...
