TEMS gearbox brace, 3S bearing failure - again

I'm starting to dread opening these motors, the new motor in the TEMS looks like the bearings have
run dry at some stage. I replaced these with 2nd hand bearings and will have to nurse it till the new motor is built.

Kinda hard to believe this motor made no noises and was running well?
The bearings had lost all their crush and literally fell out when I unbolted the caps.

Go easy on the sump silicone guys!! I've seen this stuff seize a motor when it comes loose and
clogs the strainer and pump. Many of these motors don't even have sump gaskets?
I'm wondering if they came like that?

    OK, thanks
I'm glad I opened her up, I can't use a car without knowing what's inside

    Bearings
ACL seems to be the premium brand here, I have ACL mains already but will need to look into the B/E bearings more.

ST162 Camry Brake master cylinder conversion fail ...

With the motor out I decided to fit the bigger Camry brake master cyl
as it's simply not possible with the motor in on the RHD car

The cylinder fits but the bottle is too big to clear the strut tower and the
footprint is different to the ST162 bottle - scratch one Camry conversion.

This pics shows just how little room there is with the stock m/c
    [IMG]

LHD cars should have no such problem - anybody want a Camry master cylinder?
Time to find one from a ST185 or ST205

Thats a bugger :? shame as it would be a handy upgrade.

Stupid engine bay lay out in our RHD cars

Went to the yards again today in the rain

The late 90's Camry Touring has a much smaller bottle and it will fit
pity I didn't see it before

Saw something that had me speechless for a while - a 93 Corona EX s/wagon, 3S-FE
Damm thing has AWD and is an AUTO??

The object of my cross-country trip turned out to be a red ST161 with a carbed 4S-FE, auto.
This car had me scratching my head as well, the interior is black, seats are an unusual black/blue
combination. It has 4 bolt hubs, rear drums but fitted with electric heater controls, electric windows,
electric mirrors etc. The plate says 4S-FE so it's not a conversion either

Anyway I now have more JDM corners, mirrors etc for those who may need any

    Celica ST162 number plate surrounds

Just imagine the money wasted designing, manufacturing, supplying and stocking
    all these different parts

The normal number plate surround - has a light on each side
    [IMG]

I was sorting the spares to go to the Fiji car and noticed this number plate surround with no lights
    - It's an AT160 with electric everything! Even the radio is a Toyota radio/tape/CD item, mine is only a radio/tape. Note the rear wiper - on an AT160???

Then there's this version? I think this is a very clever chop job judging by the petrol flap on this race GT4
How do I know it's a GT4? - easy, it has those black light vents RevHed is selling!
I'm sure a talented p/beater like RevHed will get some strange idea from this -
    Wiper went AWOL as well!

Iv seen that green thing before on cardomain? or it might of even been for sale somewhere theres also a
silver one on cardomain with with the backpanel smoothed like that. I wanna see what itd look like with a spoiler!
someone do a chop? otherwise it makes the car look too "nice"

    ST162 Celica speed bell

    Pop Quiz
Guess what/why this black box is mounted to the rev counter?

    It's a speed bell

Damn things set to go off from 105km/h up. Obviously the previous owner got so annoyed
with the "ding-ding" he taped up the bell plates instead of just disconnecting it.

I plan on fitting another (extra) fan switch with a higher rating (90-100 deg/C) and hooking
it up to that. At least I'll then have an audio warning if the thermo/fans etc fail, as sofar
the gauges just don't give enough warning before the hoses blow.

LOL, you're not the only one living in the garage
I think between Rich, Oxi, you & me there are some serious hours racking up

I noticed something weird tonight - there are 2 types of Aircon radiator piping.
One allows a fan to be fitted in front of the aircon radiator and the other
sits right across the centre of the radiator

The TEMS car has the latter, so my 3 fan plan has caved as I'm not paying
$1000 to get it re-gassed, guess I'll have to get a Lotto ticket

ST162 Celica Dash Air vent repair

    Dash air vents
Oxi, if you have the dash out I suggest you have a look at the dash vents.
The drivers vent has a good flap and sealing but the centre and passenger vents had
cork or foam around the flaps to seal the openings.

On mine the cork has dissappeared and the pieces I found were crumbling in my fingers.
No wonder the vents were not working. I washed them all in the sink with a long brush and
dishwash liquid - they were filthy inside! flaps sticking etc

    Cleaned and armour-alled
    [IMG]

I'm going to have to replace the sealing strips either with rubber or cork, they are about 4-5mm
thick and 8mm wide. I was thinking of cutting them in one piece and slipping them over the flaps.

No wonder ther'e not working properly
    [IMG]

    Any ideas, suggestions?

    Celica ST162 Dash vent fix

Lol, I live in a country where you can put up burglar bars but all you do
to break in is punch a hole in the wall!!!
Thanks for the offer Oxi, I'm sending your parts tomorrow

    THE FIX
I found an inner tube and cut squares the size of the vents and the inner hole the size
of the flap holder. The rubber is much thinner (2mm) than the slots but it works beautifully.
I put the white chalky side to the inside so you won't see them from inside the car.
    NOTE:
You are working with brittle plastic and the units must be dismantled completely - BE CAREFUL!!

I actually tried many different combinations before settling on the final cuts, they may look scew
but the vents are also warped etc. I deliberately cut the sides wider to give some friction and now
you can set the flaps in any position and they stay put, there is no vibration, rattling etc anymore either.
They are slightly stiffer than normal but I was always partial to a tight fit :)

    A prototype seal
    [IMG]

    Fitted - closed position
    [IMG]

    Open position
    [IMG]

The centre unit flaps - a PITA to strip/assemble, the seals are cut longer to stop them jamming against
    the housing
    [IMG]

There you have it - a REALLY cheap but time consuming fix, I recon the flaps will be good for at least 15 years.

I can't wait to have a car with proper working demister and flaps

    JDM boot mounted radio aerial

Ever noticed how the JDM 162's lack a radio aerial?

That's because they come equipped with an amplified aerial built into the bootlid,
notice the extra wires around the rear screen which act as the antenna

In a country where the kids take pleasure in vandalising cars, it's a handy feature

lol check the back window. it looks like one of the rails for the defroster, but it's not!
the 928 i work on has the same style antenna in the wind screen.

Re: JDM parts, $1 Celica's, TEMS from New Zealand....

Yesterday I felt sorry for the TEMS motor, It has been standing without
a head for the last 2 weeks.

I filled it with oil and wanted to prime the pump, bearings and galleries before
putting the head back on. Anyway I put a belt on the pump and was turning it by
hand for 30min - no joy

I then had a brainwave and put a 12mm socket on the drill and spun up the pump
expecting to see oil come out the head feed hole. Fark me - the oil shot out the hole
up the windscreen, roof, engine bay of the car with heaps of bubbles coming out,
what's worrying is that the oil is still black even though it has been changed which
means there is heaps of old oil hiding in the block, filter etc (I normally change the filter
for a new one after 50k's)

This weekend I hope to fit the head and front hubs, 202 disks, calipers etc (the caliper brackets
have been machined down 5mm to allow for the wider disks)
