    Celica ST16x models

How to get your partner to let you have as many Celica's as you want!
    (Stig's tried and proven method)
At one point I had 3 Celica's standing outside and there was way too much grumbling from the household engineering dept,
so I decided to do something about it

    It goes something like this:
    Him: Guess what
    Her: What?
Him: I bought something, go on - guess what?
Her: Unless it has diamonds, I'm not interested!
    Him: I bought another Celica
    Her: You're joking?
    Him: No joke
Her: Where the phuk are you going to put another car!!??
    Him: It's taken care of
Her: Don't you have enough already?
    Him: LOL
Her: What the hell are you going to do with it??
Him: Drive it! - it's a race car
Her: YOU'RE F@#^$ NUTS, not over my dead body!
    Him: I'm serious
Her: You think you're funny coz I'm not laughing!?
    Him: LOL (opens a box)
    Her: Vereee funnee!

It's a Scalextrix 1/32 scale AWD with working lights made by SCX (Matchbox UK p/n 83320)
Scale speed is something like 500km/h, so not only does it run but it's easily the fastest gen4 around!

A few weeks later a similar conversation took place, and the result:

    Its a Tamiya 1/24 scale ST162 GTR p/n 56

A few weeks later a similar conversation took place, and the result:

1/64 scale, made by CMS JPN - There's a whole collection at: http://www.cmscorp.jp/w/products/index.html
Amazing detail, if only it was bigger

A few weeks later a similar conversation took place, and the result:

These are only available in Japan, the writings all in Japanese

So there you have it, I could then buy & sell Celi's to my heart's content.

Actually a year later I found an easier way - GET ANOTHER GIRLFRIEND WHO LIKES CARS!

    Lock - key matching
I bought some spare locks for the cubby and bootlid as my key doesn't work for some reason on the 87. I'll be swapping levers around to get them working again, very easy to do & I'll do a write-up if anybody is interested. Collect some spare locks in the meantime. If a lock can be opened it can be modded!

Saw this early T-VIS ad for sale, & bought it for $10

    3S-GE gen2 Intake pics

Found a 3S-GE gen2 JDM lower intake for the new motor today

Who said there's no T-VIS? It's vacuum operated and adjustable

Actually it's a variable plenum chamber and lives on top of the lower manifold, far away from the ports and valves

will that bolt up though? i think you have to use a gen 2 head.

3S-GE gen2 intake pics, 3S-FE carb head pics

Yeah, JDM GE gen2 motor looks like this...
Believe it or not..... it WILL bolt up to a GE/GTE gen1 head too (without TVIS)

Notice the FE style inlet ports?

Manifold fitted - cams are interchangeable with the Gen3 head.
Buckets and shims are the same as that used on FE heads

    Intake ports look like this

3S-FE JDM carb head - has injector cutouts etc but no injector holes or rail holes.

Obviously designed for EFI from the start

OZ JDM embargo, NZ JDM law changes, WOF - Warrant of fitness

I learned some interesting information over the weekend - none of it good news I'm afraid.

The reason Oz does not allow JDM imports is because they wish to maintain the Holden/Ford monopoly in Australia and in so doing preserve the jobs of thousands of workers in those factories.

Which explains why NZ is the #1 JDM dumping ground, which may seem like a blessing,
but unfortunately 99% of the JDM imports are utter crap and have devalued the NZ car market to the point where 2nd hand car sales have come to a standstill. Most buyers simply order cars direct from JPN on the internet! It seems that Japanese drivers are penalized the minute their cars exceed 100 000 km.

In response, the NZ govt has made changes to the car eligibility laws in NZ. You can no longer register a car/truck older than 1994 and it must pass new crash and emissions laws. (WOF = Warrant of fitness every 6 months)
Historic cars are exempted but they must be at least 30yrs old.
2nd hand trucks do not pass the new emissions laws, and many sports cars ie the RX7 gen7 do not pass new crash laws
and I cannot re-register my 87 Celica project car as the registration expired 3 years ago.

My only option is to buy a currently registered but f/d car and convert all my hard work over to the new chassis.
I have found 2 cars worthy of re-building, one of which is this Black 88 GE with a f/d motor which I'll be inspecting this week.
Unfortunately the project car will have to be crushed or donated for track use and I'll be selling whatever spares I can.

If I don't act fast and re-instate this car it will also go into the crusher as the licence etc is already behind and the cut-off is 12 months

As it has stood in the yard the last few months - head is blown and the boot full of water

    Its mine!!!

The good news is I bought the Black 87 GT-R!!! for $350
    it's a very unusual car: 100% original
3S-GE with manual gearbox & the gearbox still works! (f/n rare here)
Ex JDM car with 2 NZ owners, first one was a lady, second was a guy who had it resprayed and spent a ton of money on it
    Power fold mirrors
TEMS "active electronic suspension?" - didn't know it was even fitted to Celica's till now
    Electric seat
Original working "full height" Toyota R/T/CD
Licence and roadworthy are only 2 months behind

I can't get it home yet as the headgasket has gone and I don't have a trailer - yet
I'll be swapping stuff with the project car and then selling off the body and spares
Let me know if there's anything you want

TEMS suspension, Celica Warning stickers, Celica parking sig

It looks like they fitted them across the board including the JDM st182.
The most are in the USA fitted to Supra, Cressida, Soarer etc

I found heaps of of guys saying it does work and looking for replacements up to 2006, but nothing after that.
There is (was) a place in Sydney that refurbishes them - http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?p=470829

I was going to buy a MR2 but working on the motor looks like an absolute PITA.
If you did get one, you may need one of these warning stickers I designed & made at home

    Ebay version looked lame
    [IMG]

But you'd have to get a Celi for this:

I'm making them up for my cars, but if anybody else wants - let me know and I'll discuss royalties with the site

Yeah Sprey, stock, custom - whatever you want, pm sent

I have a baseball bat for the fukr that broke my mirror,
the sticker is just a warning!

The T-Vis goes on the pass side rear window and the other goes on the drivers side.
Still thinking about one for the alarm - ideas?

I bought a batch of photos from a motoring photographer this week, most are of 185's & 205's
but this one was worth it - Juha Kankunen on his way to winning the 1989 NZ Rally in the WRC

Celica Rally car facts, news from NZ

I think you're referring to customer Group N cars-
Toyota believed (rightly) that they couldn't afford to lose an extra 20 seconds/wheel change.
Over a rally 10 or 20 changes adds up to...

It's on all the TTE (Toyota Team Europe) cars right up till they withdrew
    [IMG]

Also a quick way to spot replicas?

This is the group N car which won the 1991 NZ Group N WRC rally the same year as Sainz won the NZ WRC rally.
It has only happened twice, once here and the same year in the Safari rally, car is still in NZ
    and appears at selected events

The car was built by TTE in Germany but has a conventional motor, gearbox, suspension, brakes etc
Mirrors and skirts may have been removed later - note the early type tail lights

I found the source of my exhaust leak - I think? Stole one off a dead ST182 - they're identical!

This week's news is the TEMS car is now home and awaiting TLC

My mate from Devonport, SAMBO (he of sticking a GE G3 in a Corolla fame) is awaiting site approval
and liked the idea of owning a Celi so much (I'm evil) went out and spent $600 this weekend
on this Black GT-R with full black leather.

I suspect the body trim and interior were swapped from a JDM GT4

much coolness, The TTE cars are all 4 stud, just checked and pics from 88 tour de course debut confirm it.

Re the black leather, only ever seen leather in JDM cars in the uk, AFAIK it was not even an option for uk cars?

Glad NZ being well repped ;)

    ST162 GT-R JDM, TEMS version

Well the TEMS GT-R is here and here are some "before" pics:

The Black body/Blue interior is really striking, the blue is soon to be replaced with Black/Grey interior

The engine bay - T/B linkages and exhaust manifold differ from my other GE

First time I've seen a guard over the alternator pulley, the red stuff is what was coming out of the radiator.
Note the lack of a P/S cooler, normal on all JDM models

Here you can see the unusual shock cover and control wiring

    Weird disco light rev counter

Re: JDM parts, $1 Celica's, and much more from New Zealand....

interesting... tell us more bout the TEMs, how does it feel when driving?
by the way that ESC light is in place of ABS. ESC was a version of it fitted to some models. Cannot find much other info bout it?

Very jealous of the variety of cars you have in NZ. in the Uk we got one version of St162, equivelent of the GT-R top of the range and that was it, import quotas at the time stopped Toyota importing a full range, which in my opinion hampered the cars sales success againist its domestic competitors.

In the UK there is always a market for lower powered coupes, as insurance costs for a 2.0l were high, 1600 GT and the 1800 SX, ST and SV models would have sold well. Witness the engine range spread for cars such as calibras, corrados etc.

Sadly with the current exchange rates and shipping cost, it would be completly insane from a money stand point to import any other models as a private venture in to the UK

    I wonder too... :?
Why our french - and more generally european - GT 2.0 (equivalent to GT-S, Aussie SX...)
162s didn't get illuminated sunshaded, automatic A/C or "2.0 TWIN CAM 16" lateral stickers...? :?:

    Battery maintenace how-to

    Battery Maintenance Tips http://www.st162.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=4086
To keep that battery working like new

Most manufacturers have a worldwide base model and then the options are separate models with optional extras.
Why Toyota sold different options as different models and changed the specs in different countries is a mystery.
Perhaps they didn't think the internet would ever happen? :?
I can't order OEM spares without a VIN, Chassis & Engine no - that's how confusing it is here! - and they still get it wrong.

The head gasket on the TEMS car is blown - BAD
I was able to get it on and off the trailer, that's it. You can see the red crap that was coming out the rad in the pics.
If you switch the car on from outside you can hear all kinds of faint whirring and clicking from the 4 corners,
the lights scroll (checking?) and then you select normal or sport setting.
The first light is normal and the second is the sport mode.
When braking, cornering or accelerating the 3rd light will come on but you don't actually feel any changes.

Once I get the new motor in and start chucking it around, it may make a difference but the
next few weeks will be spent getting my other car ready for MOT (it's knackered), my
mate's (sambo) new car through MOT and stripping the spare car and selling off the parts.
Sambo (Sam) wants to convert his auto to manual as well.

Luckily the response sofar has been good so it looks like most of the car will be put to good use, and hopefully some of those guys may be joining us here.

The TEMS car is going to need a lot of TLC, I went to swap the rims yesterday and had to use a powerbar and a 1,5m pole to get the nuts undone!
That's after snapping the cross wrench by jumping on it!
Most of the studs are knackered and already been replaced with mild steel ones, so it looks like it's easier just to swap out the hubs?
The drivers power fold mirror was held on by electrical tape, the screw holes are stripped, luckily the passenger side still has 1 screw holding it on.
The drivers window motor is knackered and some of the switches don't work.
