No - typical of lobes running at the correct clearance, it's the darker ones that need adjusting
    Good job

Cheers kev, the darker lobes clearances are too loose and not scraping enough oil - on the right track ?

New toys, white lightning is getting rebuilt

No, the loose ones are getting to much oil and allowing carbon to build up on them

    Toyota Apprenticeship

Well I haven't done much to either car lately, although the daily seems to have sprung an oil leak this past weekend and I need to get on it asap.

3 Weeks ago, I started my Apprenticeship at a Toyota dealership, they have a huge servicing department, and it involves a lot of cleaning at this point. Once that silly stuff is out of the way I get to work with mechanics for a couple hours and deliver cars across the city, which is pretty fun. Everyone there are good to work with, which goes a long way when you're doing long hours.

They mostly do warranty servicing, so I am driving nice new Landcrusier turbo diesel v8s, prados, aurions, camry sportivo and hybrids, cool stuff.

The last 6 Months, I did my pre apprenticeship work experience at a small, 3 man garage which was a lot of fun and I did a lot of solid work there, partly unsupervised after the first week. Good bunch of guys and they set me in good stead for the future. I did a lot of water pumps, cooling systems, brakes, suspension, exhausts, engine servicing, a few timing belts, tyre changes, 4wd full servicing, a few clutch changes heaps more.

It's going to be a long road but I have my Cert II now, and will end up with my Certificate III - Light Vehicle Mechanic.

Hopefully Toyota works out well and I do the whole lot there.

I'm kinda starved for learning at the moment, but school starts again in Feb, and now I've been there a while I'm getting more meaningful work. It's a buzz to do brake pads which is kinda sad as I did about 4 sets aday among other things at work experience.

Being a member of this forum over the years I have learned a lot, to be honest, so much more than could be learned in 6 months of tech school. And the next couple years of work, I'm sure. I have my project celica to give me more experience hahah.

Ah well, that's my story, I wish everyone the best for the coming year

    Cheers

It's great that you got your foot in the door and I'm sure you will have a rewarding career.
Doing brakes may not seem exiting but remember people's lives are at stake

Thanks Kev, you've been a big help and kept my motivation going more than a few times, as has this whole community. Cheers guys!

Yeah it was said that at my age, it's too late, I heard that for 6 months but I kept at it and here I am.

Today was sweet, installed a winch on a landcrusier bullbar, couple of big drives, cleaning is getting faster and easier hahah.

I like doing brakes, it's satisfying to do them right and i've got it down pretty well. Just haven't done many lately. Opportunities are already picking up which is great.

I do everything at work as I would on my own car, I've had some great and bad experiences with mechanics in the past and learned from all of them

    Oil leaks

Found 2 oil leaks, one behind the timing cover, and one from the sump washer.

Changed oil and the washer today, then washed the engine and car. I'll have a look for more leaks.

I got some prices for all the timing end stuff, I can change the intake cam pulley at the same time as the belt, seals and pumps.
