May 1987 Celica SX, 3s-ge, manual.

Hi I've been around here a while and got a lot of good advice from you all recently which has helped me
reach this point. Just reached 350,000 km on the body. I never thought I'd see these numbers and I don't think i will get to again on any car. its been a good 140000km between me and the Celi.

Spent way too much money on this car, but for the wrong reasons - mechanics replacing bits and pieces and not actually fixing the problems at hand. I'm currently replacing front end parts and later the rear by myself with help from a couple of mates, a haynes manual, the online bgb and you guys. I have big plans, little money and some useful tools n equipment.

Now at 396000km this is where I stand

Need tune up - plugs, dizzy replacement bits, check timing, oil, gearbox oil....

    Cooling
New coolant, thermostat, ecu and dash sensors

    Ignition
    Fresh plugs, leads
    rebuilt dizzy

    Fuel
    60,000km pump
    need new filter

    Intake
    unshielded pod, good enough

    Driveline
    New gearbox fluid
New shafts, cvs, bearings, fresh hubs
Need to flush and bleed clutch cylinders
Clutch is about 80,000km old but feels good

    Brakes
New disks, pads, rebuilt, blasted and painted black calipers
    New fluid, full flush/bleed
Want braided lines as my rubber ones are worn

    Suspension / Steering
    need front swaybar endlinks

    Fresh alignment
poly swaybar and lca mounts - front
    new balljoints, tie rod ends
-2nd new LH balljoint - bolt was farked on #1
    poly rear trailing arm bushes
    replacement steering column

    want new strut mounts
    want waybar poly bushes
Want new rack or rebuild spare

    Engine
timing kit and water pump installed at 380,000km or so.
whirring - need to check belt tightness n pulleys
    Want new oil pump

Oil pressure slow to build, when warm i need to rev it up a bit to get the pressure gauge to 1/2 way. Once its there it stays there.
    oil pressure fine when running

Runs okay but wearing out fast

Any advice and criticism and comments are welcome

thanks man it was a good one, celi made it 110km each way along a dark 2 lane highway through the nicest bush and visibility of stars you could hope for, to chill at a bush doof all night. didnt think she'd make it but i was hopeful, running exactly the same and only problem was the alarm remote battery nearly died but it magically worked as the day warmed up to get us home. another good adventure for the old girl.

just read a bearing replacement writeup on alltrac.net so next step is to sand paint and rebuild hubs with bushings and bearings. should i clearcoat the paint and how many coats of each is good for these parts that get the most crap from the road?

Best is to sandblast and powdercoat those parts, Paint does not last under the car

Did you manage to find another AFM, pipe etc?

Re: trels' kelika 87 Celica SX, reached treefiddy

fair enough, i know nothing of painting but ive got a start point to learn now, thanks.

i'll get a few more things together and get them powdercoated black when ive got the money.

thinking of doing hubs, new struts, rebuilt or new calipers, middle of brake disks, lower control arms, springs. any other parts i should consider coating in the front end?

found an afm and pipe from a fella on here in the US, just a matter of time/$ i hope.

having a hard time finding a distributor cap for a good price, last i asked toyota it was over $200.

been looking through vacuum diagrams, think i know what else to remove for the egr - couple of holes to plug and remove charcoal canister, as well as the a/c idle up and vsv. makin progress.

    cheers.

    kelika body condition

got a lot to do on the body and thats just on the surface, haven't looked under things for rust yet.

i think the cars been repaired after a front end crash in the past, a few paint areas and the excessive body filler in the engine bay lead me to that.

possible bad repair - bonnet also sits a bit to the left (as you look at it). lots of body filler, covering one of the bolts, on both sides.

never done body work before and i just want to get it rust free and primered with paint to come later. i've read many posts on here about this stuff but any more advice is great.

    cheers.

Re: 87 SX kelika, 350000k service plans

Yeah, serviced a white Corona 162 a few weeks back at over 410 000, my spare
carbed FE motor also has over 400 000. Cars with auto tend to have way higher milage
    motors

Nice collection of dents there, nothing major though, kill any rust before it kills your car.

That "silicone stuff" is standard issue Toyota sealant, on some cars they overdid it, in my TEMS
the floor panels, boot panels etc also had way too much and I cleaned it up with a chisel

Re: 87 SX kelika, 350000k service plans

stig nice one this car has had minimal work in the last 2 years and putting along nicely, with repair theres no reason she cant go a few more years, heres hoping 500,000km. i dont know the mileage on this motor, its apparently from an 86 with auto, 'rebuilt'.

the rust on the roof edges - does it require cutting and welding the roof? is this real dodgy? no sunroof.
also rust on top of the rear license plate panel, needs cutting and welding.

hopefully getting rid of the crackling ive been hearing for months under load, unless its a valve...
going in for exhaust checkup this week, couple hangers need replacing, pipe dented in from broken engine mount+crossmember, possible gasket and or headers/downpipe leak. think its a downpipe even tho not turbo.

anyhow ill see how it goes and go from there. still chasing a dizzy cap, might have to bite it and get a new one from toyota for a long wait and big $.

    EDIT:

Stig if i remove the sealant what kind of water leakage can i expect? should i reseal once i clear and replace the fenders?
    any more suggestions on powdercoating?
    ST165-2765 i've seen this thread viewtopic.php?f=57&t=4503&start=140,
specifically you say you use 14 gauge sheet metal for the rockers, how about the side panels and rear tail panel?

Powdercoat - everthing must be sandblasted 1st and spotlessly clean

Rust - most of that looks like surface rust, sand it back to see how bad it is and treat it.
Car will look like s$%t till you spray it though, I'd remove the rooflining and spray the channels
as well from the inside as well as the body panels etc

Sealer - don't remove it, trim off the excess. It's like rubber

Re: Andrews' 87 SX 3S-GE 370000km - work in progress

Yeah, there is a lot of rust going on under the dash as you've now seen,
I just treaded it all with rust killer, fish oil would probably be just as good

Oil sounds good, question is how does the geabox feel?
Boxes know what they like & don't like

Nice work on the suspension, expensive but it's not something you need doing
    for a few years

You must be feeling some satisfaction by now or you would'nt say you've come too far?

Re: Andrews' 87 SX 3S-GE 370000km. Brakes, Susp. Done! Pics

Stig -yeah its been great with the fresh suspension, i planned for ages and finally made it happen. Very satisfying, worth the efforts

lost posts from end of 2010

    I installed new
front rotors / calipers-sandblasted, sealed, painted black / pads
spare front hubs with new tie rod ends, balljoints, wheel bearings
driveshafts left and right - locally rebuilt toyota items
poly bushes - swaybar, lower control arms, rear trailing ends.
had the power steering high pressure hose tightened, fixed my leaks.
Lovells 1st drop springs and kyb gr2 struts put in all round.
Lowered the car about 1.5" both ends, it feels a lot flatter cornering. I don't drive it 'fast' anymore but still throw it into corners and its great fun.

Gotta install rear brake rotors n pads, and check out the calipers n park brake.
I'dl like to get poly end links and steering rack replacement bushes

The celis body is rusting in a few places, got a few dents n scratches, the engines on the way out, but the suspension n brakes are sweet so thats phase 1

    Andrews' 87 SX 3S-GE - camber n wheel rubbins

I've had this prob a while now, when i turn left hard, theres a loud rubbing noise. when i jack the front end up and turn the wheel, nothing touches the wheel well.
This happened before i lowered the car also.
    Im running on 14" tyres, 195/60 R 14 86H

I have 2nd hand soft tyres on the front, and theyre barely worn in the middle but on the outside edge theyre worn past the tread indicators. i spose this is partly from the lowering.

My old hubs had the camber adjuster bolts but these ones do not. Anything i can do to get more negative camber?

ps i think + camber is the top of the wheel closer to the middle of the car, is this right?

Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 380000ish kms, much work to be done

So after a set of Protek driveshafts/cvs, i had a lot of play where the shafts go into the manual transmission. had them replaced with rebuilt toyota items, and they were great for maybe 10 000km. I've checked where the left one goes into the gearbox and its seated properly but has a bit of freeplay n clunks when i start off slowly or change gear at higher revs.

Ive changed everything but the gearbox so what do ya reckon?

    - been suggested its the motor mounts. they were replaced by a dodgy fella a couple of years ago, worth checking out.....

My engines been whirring at idle for a long while now, so i'm going to get into the timing and valve covers and see whats going on, maybe a belt is too tight - hopefully.

gonna learn to do a compression test among other things, use this as a learning experience.

I had a spare 3sge with spun bearings to rebuild but that was taken during a house move, so if i find the damage is done, i'm looking at rebuilding the engine or getting a new spare to work with.

im at the point where the car is worth not much to sell, but is priceless if i can strip it down and build it up again.

after exams i will get into the motor n see whats what

thanks for everyones help and encouragement over the years!

Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 380000ish km - unplug cyl while running?

Can I turn the engine on, and unplug cylinders to isolate noises? Do you unplug while the engines on or off? Unplug from the spark plug or dizzy?

Last year working on an old Pulsar I put my hand on or near the dizzy, and got thrown back. It wasn't fun at all.

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 380000ish km - big plans n problerms

Wirring noise could be a cambelt tensioner going, don't over tension the cambelt

Why you want to disconnect plugs? I can't see that helping to find noise
When we pull plug wires it's to see that each cyl drops revs by the same amount or there's
a problem with the valves or piston.
Wrap your hand in a rag, pull each plug cap and see

At 360K I think the motor is waiting for a recon anyway, I've yet to see a GE go past 200K without
    smoking or gasket failure.
    What is the compression?
Sure it hasn't been reconned before?

Tyres wearing to the outside is positive camber or wheel alignment issues (toe in)
Tyres wearing to the inside is negative camber or wheel alignment issues (toe out)
Best is have the wheel alignment done with all the new stuff and check the printout
    against the BGB settings.

Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 380000ish km - big plans

-Pulling plugs - asking for curiosity mainly, good to know

-A mate has a compression gauge, will report back.

-Tyres - i had an alignment done after the work i did, and the poly bushes, will get another one with tyres.
looking at $150 each for Bridgestone 195/60R 14 86H. Sound about right?

    - Motor could use a rebuild when I have more cash. Burns maybe a litre of oil over 2 weeks, drive it most days. Could be leaking from the valve cover or dizzy but ill see about that soon. Sometimes the level doesnt change for a month.

-Motor was put in at 280,000km with new timing/seals/water/oil pumps, got it from a wrecker, no idea what its original km's are. Timing has been done again a few months ago. I will check the belt along with the cams n distributor in one go.

    Cheers

Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 380000ish km - big plans

    Shop around - $150 for 14" is a rip-off, even here that's about double

Do the alignment again once you have the new tyres, if the old ones are worn weird
    they will influence the settings.
