you don't have to drill holes on to the body just strip the panel on the inside and you will have space to knock the dent out

Cool Andrew, if you don't have the ducts I suggest you make some or use alu strips etc.
The spoiler needs re-enforcement or the ribs all break

You can knock all those dents out if you remove the interior trim and use blocks of wood etc
Carefull not to go too far or stretch the metal

The windscreen is a PITA, it's lower than the frame and not easy to make a silicone bead look decent

Just finished painting, it doesn't look the best
    - the tape pulled up original paint
    - the edges of paint along the tape were real bad
so I went back and did it again.
It's rust free and covered so that's good enough for me. I used acrylic primer and enamel white spray can.

I need the windscreen clips to get the trim back in, all in good time.

This is the best area I did

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 386000km

I've had a look at the bolts in the front end,
The LH balljoint - the bolt is stripped and so is the hole.
So I will try borrow a tap and get another bolt or buy a new balljoint.

The LH driveshaft is not fully seated in the box, but I cant get any meaningful force on it without a hoist I think. Maybe ramps...

    More work coming soon

    Thanks for all the inputs!

Well done, good effort. At least there's no rust for now, and when you have to do some more painting, you've got some experience now.

good work mate just one small tip for future when you mask tape like that on the roof when removed it's going to leave you with a line of paint try not to mask it next time you must just flat it with fine paper and then when you paint the surface it will over spray on to the parts that have old paint on them then all you have to do is take some thinners spray it on the over spray part then you will not be left with that edge of paint or a big color difference as well that's what we call it blending just a thought but still good work like the flaps maybe others would have not done what you have done experience come's from trying out your self.

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 386000km

Thanks for the kind words, this is turning out to be a rescue mission, not yet a restoration. It's raining a lot here and the cars had enough winters damage already

Next time I will sand the areas down enough that the new paint matches the level without an edge on it.

I thought about not taping the roof but seemed the best way to go - the new paint isnt the same white as the old i'd rather have a small area off-white.

Found some spare clips for you

Put the tape further back, don't spray right up to the tape and lightly flat it wet with 1000 grit
    or Chemico, then polish.

Take the fuel flap off and into the shop to match the paint closer, that white is a pita to match

At least the rust is dead and it's sealed for a proper spray job later, good effort - nice to see
    someone thinking long term :cool

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 386000km

Yep this is a long term project car allright.

Thanks both fernando and stig for the painting advice, it was my first day, and i used 120 to rough it up, then 600 wet to wear down the edges on the tape, when i do the rear end rust, i think i'll sand back the front paint and redo it.

Went for a great drive to the hills for work today, fell in love with the car again on roads i used to travel often.
Bonus - the fella there has a engine crane and stand i can borrow indefinitely!
Ill find a 3sge to rebuild soon, thinking 2nd gen to keep it all going better and longer.

Still looking for tyres, think i'll have to just spring for the $150 or so per front and get it done with.

I could spend between 100 and 160, i think that with the lowered springs, new shocks, poly bushes and so on,
I might as well get the best tyres I can.

With the new balljoint and alignment, should be pretty nice.

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 386000km

What is the best way to put the black trim back on the car? liquid nails? double sided tape? glue?

    still to deal with -
rhs dent behind door - knocking out from inside is tricky, the inner shell of the car is in the way of a decent hit.
rhs rear dent - just above and behind wheel arch, no real access to it inside.
lhs rear quarter - dented in, scratched, painted over for now, good from afar but far from good
rust on rear tailgate under bootlid, and top of hatch

but looking good in the right light :)

thanks again to Stig for the front lip bits, so so good to have it back on!

-the side trim is held on with double stick. 3m automotive type. you can also buy a 3m adhesive promoter. comes in a little packet like one of those handy-wipes for your hands. i did one as a tester and it was harder to get back off than the 25yo oem stuff.

    Looking good

We had a guy come out and take out some dents on a X-Trail I wrapped this week, $70/dent and the guy was amazing.
(Lots of weird looking special tools to get into panels like that)
You'll have to pay someone to take those awkward ones out or risk making it worse, the one behind
the drivers door looks like the metal has stretched too

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 386000km

Thanks I'll take the trim out from the inside and get someone to get the dents, there are a few paintless dent removal people nearby. It needs some levers and jimmying, better leave it to a pro :)

    3m tape sounds good thanks.

Today I replaced the balljoint and torqued everything in there. Took it around the block and it feels good, will get an alignment with the new tyres.

Dizzy and timing stuff to be done soon, uni is taking a lot of time up.

    Cheers!

    Re: Andrews 87 SX 3S-GE 386000km

yes the metal has streched no way dent removals can remove that without having it filled up with blog but dent can still be removed by means of tool's like stig as said and agree with stig give that one to the pro's

    Dizzy rebuild

Hi been a long time but back in action

Upto 397000km now and getting some money together for the body/engine in the coming year. It's come this far, gonna keep it going!

Changed the dizzy seals, cap, rotor, still pings but what can ya do on a budget.
Have to do the bearings but I want to use a vice.
The old cap seal broke apart in my hands, the one outside the rotor shaft was perfect but changed it anyway.

One thing - i didn't check which way the rotor pointed before i started taking it apart, got lucky and put it in the right way first time.
Did mark the timing spot for the dizzy tho, every bit helps

    Amp and Sub install

Had this Sony Xplode 4 channel 500w amp for a few years, never used it, so got a sub on sale and went for it.
Took a day to run the wires and get the interior spot on

It has 1 pair of RCAs from the headunit to the amp, and the sub is bridged on the amp. The front speakers and rear 6x9s run off the headunit.
I can control the bass with boosters n tone etc on the headunit. It fades in with the rear speakers. It'd be nice to have the sub volume controlled independently but i'm very happy with it as it sounds.

I ran the power and remote wires down the left side under the carpet and the rca's down the right side. Ground wire goes to a bolt just behind the back seat. They come out through a hole in the rear seat carpet straight to the amp. Got 12mm MDF and cut a board, drilled it into the side plastics. I can remove it when I need but won't be for ages!

Through the old AC pipe grommet with lots of tape
    [IMG]

I had to fix the parcel shelf, I moved the metal bar toward the rear, and added hinges and cord to the shelf so it works normally again!
The metal bar holds the sub in place very well, hard corners it doesn't budge.

Emptied the AC box, meaning to do this for ages. I didn't realise how big it was but doesn't weigh much at all

    Gidgegannup WA

Red dirt fun at a beautiful lookout in the Perth Hills,
This day there was heavy smoke from fires ~400km south. A prescribed burn went out of control for the second time in as many weeks during the hottest part of the year. Fortunately no lives were lost but lots of bushland/property/homes/stuff.

Nice system :D I wish I had one haha. My two rear's aren't working and my two front speakers are working but cut in and out and 60% of the time stop working after a while, but then come right on again when you least expect it. Looks like I have to rewire everything.

Does your battery gauge move go crazy when you use the system?
