Will the ST185 front brakes fit on an ST162?

It just plug and play. Without ABS you just have alot less steel brake line.

its good you dont have abs, its the actual pump thats the pain, it reduces the brake presure and the lines as mentioned are far more complex and a pain to bleed.

bolt on goodness for you, to swap to the 185 mc you just need to bend one line, the 3 bolt holes for the cylinder onto the booster line up and its all good.

162 and 165 hubs (where the wheel studs are mounted) are the same, as long as you swap ABS with ABS and non-ABS with non-ABS.

The caliper is mounted on the steering knuckle, but I believe they are the same with 2 differences: ABS or non-ABS and a camber adjustment cam on the 86-87, which the 88-89 don't have.

    Thanks Rick.

Now, I browsed after some info on the net, and here are two pics from the ST162 brake master cylinder (upper), and the ST185 one (lower).
Would someone please explain where is the difference that causes the ST185 one to be better? As I see, they are quite the same size and layout. Is it in the inside?

Yes, the later cars have bigger master cylinder pistons

I think the 185 brakes are a waste of time, 202 are bigger pads and wider disks

Part of the confusion we're having is due to the fact that all the JDM models seem to
have the same disk diameters and only differences in pad size, piston size and disk thickness
wheras it looks like o/s cars got a multitude of different sized disks.

st185 brakes do work better. They have a larger rotor, and better pad/rotor choices. the st185 MC is slight bigger. I have a kit off my st165 with the brakes, lines, pads and rotors if your interested.

The st205 take a lot more work, though I have done bolt on solutions for both :)

Here is the specs for the ST162 (GT-S) vs the specs for ST185 (All-Trac) with regard to rotors, pads and such. ST162 rotors are 258mm x 22mm with a 48mm offset, and use pads with a 120mm width, 47mm hieght, and 15mm thickness, where as the ST185 rotors are 277mm x 25mm with a 46.2mm offset, and use 119.7mm width, 53.7mm hieght, and 15mm thich. The master cylinder has only about a 1/8" larger bore, but in dealing with braking force, that is a huge difference. Also while the rotor size isn't huge, any gain in surface area for heat dispursment will give greater brake force numbers.

My argument exactly, the 202 brakes are similar, cheaper and easier to find, master cylinders
can be scavenged from V6 Camry, Solara etc

Dunno where you guys think you're going to find all these 185 parts?

common stig you should know by now!!

    Me :)

Ive got st185 twin pots, st185 sing pots, st205 4 pots, and if you keen to racing I even have willwood set ups.
I only have 2 cars, so I cant use em all :)

Don't know about the beams version, but US specs for the 202 brake discs read like this, 275mm x 28mm, with a 49.5mm off-set and pads measure out this way, 141mm wide, 62.4mm hieght and 17mm thich. Gotta check pad availiblity for racing if it's gonna work out for my needs!!

Did some more research, found that in my case the 185 discs and pads are the better choice. I have run Hawk Brakes and Brembo rotors as long as I've been racing, mainly cause the Hawk racing bucks are just too good, and the Brembos just last and last. In searching through the Hawk listings, the HPS model is the highest performing package for the 202s. The 185 set-up uses basicly the same pads as the 162, so I've got the choice of HPS, HPS-Plus, Blues, Blacks, and HT-10 pads.

Uh, thanks but I already have the kit since this thread was last used :)
I have the complete ST185 front kit installed now. The ST185 MC is on the way, and once I get it will be installed along with Goodridge brake lines.
I can't wait it because the ST162 MC is not enough for the bigger calipers, pedal feel is horrible :S

Anybody got any pics? esp the 185 (like hens teeth here)

I fitted the 185m/c, it does make a difference - on your car you may be able to fit the bigger servo as well

    162, 202, 165 pads
    [IMG]

The 165 & 202 brakes compared = very little difference in dimensions
But when compared to stock 162 in this pic shows a huge difference in width/caliper only

I'll see how it feels and works and if it's not enough I'll change that too :)

Not the best pic, but you can tell the difference (ST162 rotor+caliper vs ST185):

Can't see whats under there, you'll have to take a wheel off sometime

    165

Inside the 202's, Im punting them because they're cheap, available on Celis and V6's
and I suspect no different to the 185 brakes
