1500 is quite a stretch. That might be achievable if you have connections, only purchasing the engine with no tranny and doing all the fabrication/installation yourself.

    I spent about 3500 total

1900 for the engine, alternator, powersteering pump, tranny, uncut wiring harness, and ECU
and around 1600 for smaller parts like the intake, custom wiring by Tweak'd Performance, clutch kit, vacuum hoses, missing exhaust pieces, and oils/fluids.

Once everything is finished. you have to think about smog and legalization. I'm still in that process.
Should be done by the end of the month.

Here's a couple ads that I looked at when I was searching for the engine.

so 3500 includes shop putting it in for you?
Still sounds pretty good since 3sgte swaps are like 5000 w/ labor... (At least according to some internet sites I've seen on the internet and mechanic estimates)

    Thanks. :)

Oh hey, since you're in NorCal, have you heard of Venus Auto Parts in Sac? I saw that they have a few redtop BEAMS, but I dunno if that place is reliable or not.

    Anyways, you're car's lookin' sick! Can't wait til everything's finished! :D

Well after almost 2 years since my car's original 3sge blew, I am back on the road registered and insured. Took forever.

Future plans I have for it:
Upgrading the suspension once again with coilovers from MXP_57 (if he's still on the forum since his celica post isn't available)
Upgrading Wheels and Tires (16' Enkei ES-Tarmacs on Bridgestone RE-11s)
    Find Original BEAMS intake box
    Upgrading to poly bushings
Reinforcing with Cusco F + R Strut bars and Autopower Roll bar (probably some spot welding too)
Upgrading Front Seats to lightweight buckets
Completing Battery Relocation and install Oil Catch Can

Hopefully these upgrades can happen slowly over the coming year
As of now I'll just get use to my new engine and clutch disc :D.
Here's a very recent photo of my celi after a nice shower, clay bar and wax.

Looks nice and clean. I didn't even notice that the wheels are the OEM ones first, they are looking great in white!
Nice plans, your car will be awesome :)

yes, i have. =] but dont get your engine from there. buying it from there they are known to go out before its time. its just what i've heard though. but other parts there are legit. been there once a long time ago. that guy has like whole front clips of cars from japan. even some rear end clips. litterally half of cars in his place. pretty awesome, but i wouldnt get it from there. id rather get it from ataarco. or something like that. they are more legit.

sorry to take it off you rocket.

oh! and how are you gonna smog your car? lol i think some money under the table will help =]

lol already done smog. It's fully registered. :mrgreen

As for JDM clips, I have to agree with you kev. Ataarco is a reliable place to buy quality JDM engines. I just looked at their website and spotted a Beams 3sge (Altezza Blacktop RWD ver.) and of all the times I checked for a JDM 3sge this is the first time.

They also have a 20 valve 4age for sale for only $750 :shock

    lol thanks! :)
buying from venus was really tempting since they have the BEAMS redtop for only 1000 and a Caldina GTE for $900. 0_0

I guess you get what you pay for... Thanks for the warning.

$750 for a silvertop 4age sounds about right to me... Not ridiculously cheap, but not too pricy either.

Speaking of engines, where did you get yours from again?

So I was taking a breather with my celica, since It's my daily driver now plus driving really well both in rain or shine, and I decided to finally dismantle my old 1st gen 3sge after 2 years of just sitting there never knowing what actually happened.

So the work begins for about an hour or so with head bolts and a newly purchased breaker bar. Got them all off except for one which was already stripped by the jack ass who owned it before. Don't worry I removed the bolts in order according to the BGB :mrgreen . SO I had to use a special drill bit that literally destroyed the allan bolt head and freed the head.

The head was free and I pulled the head ever so slowly expecting the worst.....

Pretty detrimental. Some how a solid crunched piece of metal, about the size of a penny, was in cylinder 2. That explained why my spark plug in that cylinder became crushed in.

I looked at all the pistons and piston 2 was the one worst off.

Then I looked at the head with similar damage surprisingly the valves were not damaged just extreme pocketing on the edges.

Amazing how just this little piece can cause so much trouble. I then remembered that the TVIS induction flap module was missing a flap.

I double check and it lined up with cylinder 3 not 2. I was still puzzled. I wonder if I'll ever find out what caused it....

Well now that I took it apart and found out what happened, Those parts are now available for purchase and of course repair.

One of the bolts on my TVIS got loose about 5 years ago and fell into cylinder number two to cause some mess there. An other guy had his camshaft broken because of this. I think this is the downside of the TVIS...

Sorry about that. Didn't catch your question. I got it from JDM Engine Zone from Clifton, New Jersey.

I wonder what your pushing at the wheels

No I haven't actually. I'd really like to see how much this investment puts out. Funny thing is that I was talking with a car buddy of mine about the same thing. He told me about a couple places to check out. So we'll see. Need to replace a couple things on the BEAMS before I do that.

Try not to be biased when I ask, how do you like it?

    Practical?
    Reliable?
    Powerful? (enough)
    Affordable?

Im really set on getting a swap same time next year
    Its between the Red Top
    3rd gen GE
or 3rd gen GTE (possibly 215)

Good blend of fuel efficiency (25 to 30 mpg) and power (180 to 200 hp on an NA is enough, well for me that is) but a couple of things to know before jumping to the BEAMS.

Affordability isn't strong on this one since most of the parts (when ever you need to order replacement parts) involves importing from japan. Plus you would need to research a lot on compatibility of parts since they are very specific. Rarity is another part of owning this engine. Certain part to make it run properly are so scarce to begin with. For example: Inner diameter of the intake piping has to be 71 mm exact. no more no less or you will see problems. Another one example involve the Intake box since the MAF has a specific size and shape it needs a specific air box or cone filter. Plus the air box and intake piping is so hard to fine on its own, Just recently I found the whole set but it took me about a year and a half to fine the complete set up. That's just a taste of the other things you have to find and research.

It's very reliable but since this IS an interference engine. you have to keep it well maintained service schedule (ie, timing belt, oil change, coolant flush, spark plugs etc) If not, it can bite back ending up with a dead engine and lots of time and money wasted.

Overall I really like it because not only do you get a power gain and the better transmission but also it keeps me on my toes with maintenance. Sometimes it makes me a worry wort.

I always say that I will attend but I still see my car not yet ready to showcase. When is it exactly? I think I will have the chance to attend since my celi will have a couple major upgrades early summer.
