Re: eNtrax's 162 GT (3s-fe, Auto) fucking shit. i was driving home from work. just normal driving, think i have something wrong in the engine head. probably a blown head gasket too. oil looked...hint of green...antifreeze? the tap tap in the video below is much quieter in person and it sounds like up top. video:
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) welcome to owning an older car.....this sucks......first square one now you....im knocking on wood right now. if your oil looks greenish then you might be looking at a head gasket. and quit reving it.
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) it didn't have the knock at idle or steady rpm, so i had to rev it to get the sound out.
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) Heard that sound before... Kinda sounds like a broken shim cap or bent valve itself....collapsed lifter???
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) sounded like top end for sure i listened at it again. i've known since the start that sooner or later i'd have to work on the engine sometime and i've put it off for 6 months because i have no experience in that. i'm looking to tackle this after the 18th (last final exam). any advice? spoonfed information/steps?
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) I'd guess a 1) bearing failing or a 2)cracked piston Drop the sump and check out the bearings, if it is and you swap them now you may still be able to save the motor If it were a valve or shim/cam problem it wouldn't be idling or revving out like that. If it is a bearing it will get rapidly worse and the motor will grenade Park it up and let the g/f drive you till you get it fixed
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) she doesn't drive :/ anyways, even with the celi down, i still had to have something for it: they clipped on, no fusses or anything!
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) Dude, that blows. The FE headgaskets were only paper so I wouldn't be surprised if it was that. Whatever you do, don't put another paper gasket on it even if someone (mechanic) says you should.
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) dang 13.70 for each bezel, you can just walk in the junk yard an put it in your pocket an walk out for 2 dollars :byodood
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) meh i've been looking for some for a while now so i just decided to grab em. i've seen at least 10 mkiii supras and even more 4th gen's in the junk yard and i haven't seen a single bezel. not even one side :/ send me some :fingersx
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) i have extra clips from the dealership that i keep cuz i used to break them all the time....now im good at getting them off, but its nice to know i have a spare lying around.
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) i went to my trusted mechanic and he said most likely a bent valve. it's still drivable, but i just can't take the ticking sound when i drive it. he's not even considering fixing it for me since the cost to fix to value of the car is not worth it. so it'll be up to me. 1.) i'm going to have a major problem with frozen bolts and just in general a lack of tools. i can borrow an air compressor, but what else would i need to pretty much rebuild the head. i wanted to open up the valve cover...but even that i don't have the right size tools to open up those four grommets that hold the valve cover. 2.) gaskets. if and when I do open this up, what's a good place to get gaskets? does anyone on here have 3s-fe head parts? i should have picked up the running GT-S for $150 a few days ago here...
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) A good pair of pliers should get the big nuts loosened on the valve cover (usually not too tight), a regular ratchet/socket set, air for the exhaust manifold (be careful with the studs, they may snap, spray some WD40 or equivalent on them and let it soak in), gaskets are pretty inexpensive at the local parts house. As far as head re-working, you will have to do some legwork for someone in your area. Rick89GTS may be able to help you there being in the Vancouver area, he may have some ideas. The GTS head wouldn't have fit though, the 200 would be better suited for getting another head that's correct, or toward repairing yours... I do have one from the original engine from the Red Lady... shipping would KILL, but it's here for the taking, I just have to dig it up an make sure all is still there...
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) i might take the minivan down next week. if that's what it takes. at least i'll have a head to work with so i know what i'm dealing with before i open mine up. red lady's engine was fine right? or was it replaced before ...yenno...happened? i wouldn't mind spending the $50ish of gas. usually if i have a spare part, i'll figure out how it works.
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) Popped a timing belt, but did no damage to the valves or nothing...Never overheated either... ran until I parked her in her spot at home and she went kaput.... I kept it because it was still good, actually was going to just rebuild the whole engine and set it aside, but got rid of the block cause it was just taking up space...
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) looks like i'm driving down there next week. do you need anything for square or deuce?
Re: (limp mode) eNtrax's 162 GT (FE/AT) we'll seems like you just need some help, spend some money on a trailer and trailer it ....... could you help rick? im sure between the three of us we could knock it out in a day. you wouldnt need to redue the head gasket i believe......we could leave the head in the car while we do the repair. you would need a few more gaskets. you up for it rick? i have plenty of tools.....but ive never done a valve job before so it would be a learning experience too.
