Aeroform front bumper, More rust problem areas!

On a 87 Corona -Yeah, make one. I haven't seen another one in the last 4 years
It would be easier to mod, stronger and you could start selling them.
If it were me, I'd make a bumper skin based on the Aeroform bumper without any holes,
a flat undertray, and let customers decide where/how they want holes, lights etc

These lights just look odd, without a FMIC you have no option but to mesh up/close the hole
    for your number plate
The side vents could easily be modded to feed the brake rotors or airfilter etc

Oxi - The screws are frustrating when they crumble in your socket, I try to replace them
all with newer ones and dip them in CRC etc
I'm looking for a stainless screw replacement but havent seen anything yet

What worries me more is the state of other bolts and fixings on an otherwise "rust-free" car.

    Rear window bolts
    [IMG]

    Look under the dash
    [IMG]

Petrol flap - with obligatory squiggle writing
Eengrish translation - Don't put water in here you fool!

    Below the front screen
    [IMG]

More bad news for sunroof owners, I was going to swap mine over but after seeing this,
decided a glass flip-up would weigh faaar less and not have the entire roof crumbling

    Front spoilers, electrical gremlins

Keep us posted, I'd like to see some new thinking on the front of these cars

    Don't park under trees!
I opened the spare ventilation fan and....

    Electrical gremlins
The TEMS car is weird, unlike the other two, the windows still operate with the ignition switched off?
The central locking will lock both doors from the drivers side but when you lock the passenger side, it won't lock the drivers door?
I've changed the switch, solenoid, door controller & checked the wiring - any ideas?
The drivers side interior lock/unlock switch was broken as well but it hasn't changed anything when I replaced it.

if you use the button it should lock both doors but i don't think the key does. they are weird.

auto ventilation system, central locking problems

Mafix - on my other cars it's the other way round?
Sean - forget about the door lock switch, it's a c*^ to get to the lock mech!

I just want to know what's "normal". Does your car-
    a) Windows work without the ignition on?
    b) Lock both doors from the passenger side lock or switch or both/neither?

I can't see the point of a lock switch if it doesn't do anything, the wiring/controller etc is the same
as the others. Maybe there's a fuse or relay I've overlooked somewhere? Bad earth???

This car is doing my head in! It has the auto ventilation system switch panel, but-
    A) there's no sensor mounted in the switch panel,
    B) the rubber pipe and snorkel to the main unit are missing as well? The hole is still sealed!

Here you can see the snorkel next to the black box and the rubber pipe on the other car
which had an identical switch unit, wiring etc

    JDM window switch differences

ahh Stig the window thingy i always wondered about it !

Yes - once you switch ignition off - you can put the windows up and down provided the door is open.

Remote boot opener, Amp, Alarm install on Celica ST162 TEMS

Well, well Sprey you are right - the windows are connected to the door open switch!

Open or close the doors and you can hear a relay click twice, closing the door with the ignition off
    - shuts down the windows

This weekend I installed the Fuel pump cutout switch, works a charm

The amp is finally snugly installed alongside the TEMS computer out of sight and the airflow from the
doorwell vent to the rear tail light vents should help keep it cool. It has its own 12V supply from the battery.
Those red wires are 30A power to the boot, there is also a seperate fusebox installed next to the aux fuse panel
    [IMG]

The remote boot opener is installed and working from a button on the alarm remote
Originally I had it below the tail light but the rod would bend under load, so had to position it
in line with the key release lever
    [IMG]

The new extra boot light and power point. Has it's own power supply as well for charging drills, batteries,
running fridges and charging my battery without opening the bonnet.
If you do this don't follow my example, I ended up gutting the speaker box to get it all fitted
The rear panels have been sprayed before and now it's all peeling off - more future work
    [IMG]

Tha alarm is in and almost ready for power, note everything has been rustprooofed!

New window motor installed, ST182 seats are waiting to weld on ST162 brackets
    [IMG]

Discovered my drivers door handle is damaged, the nut retainers are broken - shart!
Had to glue it from behind in the interim

Celica TEMS window tint & patterns for sale

    Yes Oxi,
Not dark - as the windows have a green tint in them already, I used 40% Titanium tint film from Solargard in the U.S.A http://www.solargard.com

Expensive stuff, but worth it! -It's my baby
Our maximum tint level here is 35%, so hopfully it passes the test (MOT/WOF/DOT)

Old tint (cheapo film) was very blue, new is almost a black colour but shines silver in the sun
    [IMG]

I have made patterns for all the windows if anybody needs
    [IMG]

Laying the tints, I had to change winder motors etc, so did it inside
    [IMG]

Windscreen & rear window has a dark tint 5% visor installed on top for sunstrike

Dash repairs - removing bumps from the dash

The replacement dash isn't wonderful, I was hoping a better example would appear but that
hasn't happened. The dash has 2 holes in it (patched) and 2 places where the vinyl cover has started
lifting from the plastic frame due to expansion/contraction in the sun. It's a common problem with these dashes
as well as cracking on the large flat surface.

Signmakers know that plastics have "memory", ie they will always try to return to their original shape
unless the "memory" is broken by heating it in excess of 130 deg C.
In the sun behind the screen the dash can reach temps of around 90 deg C,
so the idea was to attemp
to get rid of the bumps with an industrial heat gun. There is no way to do this in the car without melting
the screen, rubbers etc. With the gun at over500 deg C the dash was in danger of catching fire
and the bumps just kept "bouncing" back everytime the dash cooled down, the heat just wasn't
able to penetrate down to the frame.

I lowered the temp to around 200 deg C and tried to saturate heat into the dash without it melting.
It seems to have worked to a degree, not as easy or as well as I would have liked but hopefully it won't continue
to form bumps in the sun - until the cover comes loose from the frame I presume

The final result, a lot better
    [IMG]

All I can do now is wait and see what happens this summer.

    Advice
Armour All the dash in the night/shade and give it time to sink into the vynil, - do it often
Try to keep the car from direct sunlight and use a sunshade whenever possible or your dash will have the same problems.

The plastic dash recover's I'v seen sofar turned out to be filler and then sprayed black,
they don't last and are a waste of time & money. Even the "plastic welding" ones came apart after a while
IMO the only way is to cover it in leather, expensive and a terrible job to do

On the interior thread there is a pic of a dash cover - anybody know where to get them?
    - before we all end up fighting over decent dashes

Modded some clear boot lenses for the door lights

Course I want one, been looking for ages!

On the topic of weird and strange accessories, I bought what I thought
was a set of SSV side skirts in Melbourne last weekend.
RevHed went to pick them up and he says no, not SSV - TRD!
Never knew there even was such a thing as a TRD kit for the ST16x?
Evidently the SSV skirts are one piece, these are two pieces

    Toyota 162 Corona interior pics

I had to slice the doors to get the new 6" speakers to fit properly
    [IMG]

Worked on this 162 Corona as well this weekend
    [IMG]

The guy just fitted a replacement GE, half the stuff wasn't connected or connected wrong
Unusual blue material - different pattern to that used on the Celica's
The seats also don't have the chrome strips, plain plastic blue strips

I mentioned in the interior section that JDM's don't have a dash dimmer switch, note the plug where
    the dimmer would normally sit
    [IMG]

The car is 100% original which is a bonus, I noticed the auto radiator is a 2 core item,
I checked my spare and it's a 2 core as well

The Toyota "T" - A short company history

The circle T only appeared in the 90's
In Africa till then the logo was a prancing horse similar to the Ferrari one

What's really funny is the JDM Toyota's, Mazda's, Nissan's all come with
different badging to the rest of the world

Check the grilles on the ST162 Corona for example
    [IMG]

    The Official story: (African version)
A company’s logo is quite simply the image that represents that company and its products in the market.
Its function is to create a memorable, recognisable impression in the minds of our potential and existing customers.
And like the very design of the cars we sell, our logo has undergone a number of refinements and improvements over the years.

    Where it all began
To tell the story of Toyota, we have to go back to the early 20th century and a company called the
Toyoda Loom Works. It was out of this company that Toyota was born, with the production of the first motor in 1937.

Initially, the company was named after its founders, the Toyoda family, but this was soon changed,
the word Toyota being easier to write in Japanese. It will come as no surprise, then, that the first Toyota
logo was a stylised combination of the Japanese Katana, or characters, for “TO,” “YO,” and “TA.”

Not sure if this was the race division logo or not? - kinda looks like a turbo & I've seen it
on some old race cars up to the 80's
    [IMG]

    South African roots
Inevitably, Toyota took root in South Africa. By this time, Toyota was represented by the word, “Toyota,”
executed in a special font. (Circular "O's", thin font)

From here, things quickly evolved. Dr Albert Wessels, founder of Toyota South Africa, had more elaborate plans in mind.
He believed that the company should have some form of emblem associated with it.
His passion for horses led to the development of a unique identity for Toyota South Africa – namely the
addition of a white stallion encircled in a red background.

By the mid 1970s, it was time for a change, once again. Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan had
changed their font, and South Africa followed suit. At the same time, the circle was replaced by
a red square with rounded edges – which was felt to be in keeping with the design trends of the day.

Interestingly enough, the Stallion has never actually appeared on a vehicle.
It has always been a unique identifier of the Company itself.

    A step forward
It was late in the 80s that things really began to get interesting. In September of 1989 Toyota made
a significant leap forward by launching Lexus, its luxury division, into the US market. Along with a
fresh marketing thrust, a new logo, in the form of a stylised “L” found its way onto the grilles, boot lids
and engine covers of these luxury cars.

Since Lexus vehicles shared many of their components with Toyotas, and in fact were even marketed as
Toyotas in Japan, the need for a new Toyota logo was identified. And not long afterwards, the logo that
you are used to seeing today appeared.

Used for the first time internationally in 1989, the new stylised “T” first appeared in 1992
with the launch of a new vehicle known as the Camry.

By 1995 Toyota South Africa had adopted the international dealer corporate identity standards and all
fascia boards at dealers across the country were replaced. At the same time Toyota South Africa adopted
the new logo for all marketing communications.

Today, the stylised “T” and its surrounding ellipses are worn proudly by both vehicles and staff,
and are recognised and respected throughout.

Symbolism of the New Toyota logo
The Toyota logo consists of three ellipses, arranged to form a stylised “T.”

    The outer ellipse
The outer ellipse is essentially a circle – the symbol of completeness. It represents strength and dynamism.
It is viewed from a slight perspective – to give it its elliptical shape – which is representative of Toyota’s
unique perspective on the automotive industry.

The outer circle draws together various elements including family, fellowship, unity and responsibility.
It symbolises our embrace of future challenges with the boundless potential of our technology and our
priority to create a “full-circle” experience.

    The horizontal ellipse
The horizontal ellipse represents the actual product that you interact with on a day to day basis – quality,
workmanship, reliability and longstanding relationships that have become synonymous with the Toyota experience.

    The vertical ellipse
The vertical ellipse is a sign of life. It represents our customers and their importance to Toyota.
We understand your needs and strive to meet them in everything we do. As is evident in our logo,
you are central to the goals of the organisation in that we endeavour to exceed your expectations.

    Lead the way
The Toyota logo is based on the circle, prized for its characteristic of continuous movement,
represented in the form of three ellipses. The Pythagoreans regarded three as the number of harmony,
since it combines unity (the number one) and division (the number two). In the Toyota logo, each ellipse has a specific meaning.
The first is the sign of life. It represents customers and Toyota’s ongoing dedication to fulfilling their needs.
The second is the symbol of power. It embodies the power Toyota puts at the customer’s fingertips as well
as the strength and drive of Toyota’s infrastructure and support. The outer circle stands for friendship.
It provides the basis for Toyota’s success, both today and in the years to come.

Pasted directly from Toyota.co.za - Logo history section. The marketing section is a strange read full of
sales b/s but mentions "Kaizen" and "Genchi Genbutsu" http://www.toyota.co.za/toyotaworld/about_toyota.aspx

Basically those two phrases were/are Toyota's mission statement and gave different marketing areas the power
to decide what was best on each model in their area - may explain why we are finding these anomalies between
different areas and why they didn't care if it cost more in tooling to please the customer -
Pity nobody took the trouble to actually ask the customer what they actually wanted or the cars would be a lot more similar.

    Celica cup holders

For those wanting to install cup holders, this is for you

Here's a cup holder lid I bought for the black cover, note how fragile the plastic
is, the lid is almost completely destroyed inside
    [IMG]

Here's my cars lid in good condition but now re-enforced with a layer of plastic
    on top and resin underneath
    [IMG]

The two types of lid, note the cupholder cannot be used with the older lid, older
lids are strong, sturdy items but you cannot change the outer skin
    [IMG]

Re-enforce these tabs with some epoxy
