It is definitely worth checking with an engineer first, there may be ADR's (Australian Design Rules) specifying how a t-top or sunroof must be designed.

yeh ill get the celi on the road and going, then im definately gonna get it looked at and considered.

this sort of "oversized sunroof" is jsut awesome

I think the T-top is the best. Oversized sunroof sounds lame...unless...you could do a glass roof. Cut most of the roof out, and put in tinted glass, a la Scion tC. But cooler. Just an idea.

u could always do a pontiac/nissan exa style targa, with a bar through the middle instead of 2 bars on the side

Has anyone thought about adding support to the floor, so that it has something to brace itself against? I remember a long while back, that someone did this same thing to a Honda, or something with a uni body, but they braced the floor underneath the car with half round tubing, and it stiffened up the chassis considerably! I personally think a "T" top would look really cool though! :) I have a vert, so there isn't much need for me to worry about this. Just some thoughts.

Does anyone know what they might have done to the convertible, that strengthened up the chassis? I would assume the same principle would apply! ;) Just throwing out some ideas to get this ball rolling! I am interested in seeing this happen. :)

slightly off topic, but related, in the 60s there was a car sold in the UK called a triumph Herald, and the saloon model, could have its roof taken off and put back on, as it was just bolted on!!! However after driving arround with the roof off, many owners found that they could not open the doors at all!!! was not a massive sales success!!

I like the T bar idea, but think that you have def got to give thought to not only the strength side of it, but weather and security, as you would not want someone able to un clip the t bar panel and then get in your car.

Toyota didn't do anything to strengthen the convertible frame. They didn't even make the convertible, they sent coupes to a company in California, and they're the ones that did all the modifications, except they didn't brace the structure. 4th gen. verts are coupes with the roof hacked off, and as such they tend to twist and roll a lot more. Kevin (another vert owner) said if he jacks up his car to change a tire, the body flexes so much he can't open the doors.

looks like a hack job, probably concaving the frame with every bump

Yeah, that car with the targa is a hack job. I already looked at it a while back. It was very badly done, also... The frame is tweaked in that section of the car, enough that the doors stick...

As far as jacking up the car, and the frame flexing, I did jack up my car the other day, and opened the doors no harder, than before. lol And my car has over 305k! I do notice that the frame flexes pretty good, if I get spirited with my driving! Once my strut braces are in, it should reduce that, quite considerably.

It would be cool, to see someone do a targa, and do it great!
