Re: ST162-7254182 Yeah considering the car has 335000km on it the interior is very nice. Thats what happens when someone cares for their car. The guy said he got it in 1992 and he really loved the car. Its got a big dent on the drivers side behind the door from a hit & run and the rocker panels and behind the rear wheels is rusted pretty good even though he had it Krown sprayed each year. But he did try to take care of the car and the interior shows it.
Re: ST162-7254182 Bravo! Yes, you are sick and you're at the right place haha hehe I wish my Celicas were all the same year: 1989 GTS Hatchback 1988 All-Trac 1986 GTS Hatchback
Re: ST162-7254182 I got the weatherstripping I needed to make a border for the mold Initially I'm going to mold 3 pieces I used Glad Press & Seal to keep the fiberglass from sticking to the car Getting the fiberglass mat cut And now with some resin on it I also put a second 1" wide strip of mat all along the edges to give it a bit more stiffness. I also ordered some 12V leds so I can put brake and turn signals in the visor. I got 20 orange & 30 red 10mm 70,000mcd leds and I might try to put a rear view camera in the visor too.
Re: ST162-7254182 Rear view cam or do you mean (forward) dash cam? I think a dash cam is a great idea
Re: ST162-7254182 No I do mean a rear view camera. What good would a dash cam be ? I can allready see in front of me. The only way I could see a forward dash cam being of use is if it had recording capabilities so you could have video evidence proving the other idiot driver was at fault. I want to get rid of the mirror at the top of the windshield. Actually I'd like to get rid of all 3 mirrors and mount 2 more cameras on the sides of the front bumper or somewhere near the front of the car, but for now I'll start by getting rid of the windshield mirror. I think I'll put the digital dash in this one so I guess its going to be my rat rod with a high tech interior. Actually I do believe that the windshield mirror is not required by law as long as you have side mirrors. So I may end up with only 2 forward mounted side view camera's. It all depends on how much room I have in the dash area. I have to put the digital dash and 2 or 3 monitors to replace the mirrors and any other extra guages I might want. I want to put everything right in front of me where I can see them while still looking straight forward. I avoid several accidents each year because I pay a lot of attention to whats happening around me. I avoided one last night because some taxi driver couldn't stop at his line and ended up stopped with the front half of his car in the intersection. I should hav T-boned him as the camry could use a new hood but .....There are vehicles like delivery vans and 18 wheelers that don't have rear windows so rear view mirrors would be "useless" but I'll have to check the codes to see whats legal. When I got home from work I went out to the garage and checked out the visor parts. I was a bit worried that the resin would disolve the press and seal and stick to the roof and windshield but the press and seal worked pretty well. I wouldn't use it again as it didn't totally prevent the resin from getting through and in one spot it rippled the paint but overall it worked okay. I have used car body panels in the past to mold fiberglass parts and in those cases all I did was give the metal surface a good coat of car wax and put the resin and mat right on that and it pealed of fine and didn't cause any damage to the original panel but in this case I had to go over a rubber windshield molding and the windshield itself and didn't think waxing those 2 pieces would work so it was either seran wrap or this press and seal and I had the press and seal allready. The biggest pain in the ass was the f'ing weather stripping. Holy crap the glue on that weatherstripping took me an hour to get of the car. I tried acetone but it did crap so I used a ton of varsol and a razor blade to get the shit off. Note to self don't buy the Walmart weatherstripping $6 for mold making again get the cheap (twice as expensive) Canadian Tire weatherstripping $12. But the pieces turned out well so overall I'm happy.
Re: ST162-7254182 LOL, that's exactly why I'd want it. I'm same as you and am on constant vigilance for idiot drivers. I drive very defensively b/c of all the morons out on the roads these days.
Re: ST162-7254182 Amazingly enough I was able to remove the press and seal. Now that the initial mold has been cast it will be a bit of trial and error to get the correct shape and proportions. In the next few pictures I have it raised up 2" which is probably a bit to high but the more clearance the better for fitting in the headlights. A couple pieces of tape to outline the missing piece And now dropped down to 1.25" A bit better of a mock up for the edge of the visor The original piece was purposely made overly big as its allways easier to trim it smaller than to have to add extra later. You can see in the picture that the piece covering the windshield was actually molded about 1.5" longer than the paper pattern. The bottom edge is to straight and needs to be rounded some like the green line indicates, probably even more than that but you can only really tell when it's on the car. There'll be a couple of adjustments to make to get the proportions correct so it looks proper on the car but so far its looking pretty promising. The pictures don't do it justice and the lighting ain't great either but so far I'm happy with the results.
Re: ST162-7254182 man, cant wait to see how the visor and lights turn out! and man! i would kill for that spoiler off of that coupe! haha nice find again. with your skills and time that one will too be a work of art. good luck with everything
Re: ST162-7254182 You'd probably kill for alot of the parts off of that car .....problem is theirs not really anyone I want dead. The previous owner had it for 17 years said he bought it 92 and always fixed any little problem the car had. With the exception of wear on the steering wheel the interior is almost mint. He said he took the carpet out every couple of years and washed it. Now thats dedication. He even had it undercoated each year with Crown rustproofing but the drivers side rocker panel is non existant under the black trim piece covering it and both rear fenders are on their way out and theres a hole behind each rear fender (rear quarter panels). Probably the result of holes at the bottom corners of the front windshield doing in the rocker panels and leaking side windows killing the rear fenders and rear quarter panels.
Re: ST162-7254182 wow, that is dedication right there. the previous owner is probably missing it right about now. at least we all know that it is in good hands.
Re: ST162-7254182 I haven't done much lately my mom's back in the hospital, she blacked out and fell. She's well into her 80's and getting pretty fragile. She didn't break anything but did bruise her ribs and right hand and cheek. So I've been spending time at the hospital. On monday 1 of her lungs colapsed and she was sent down to intensive care. They got that fixed and she's back in a regular ward. She will probably make it but she really gave up the will to live after my dad died. So either ways is okay with me I'd like to see her live alot longer but she does nothing, no hobbies or activities so she's really just passing the time until it is her time. Today were getting our first major snow storm of the year so I decided not to go into the hospital today so I got back to work on the visor. I put a couple of cardboard markers on the sides of the roof so when the visor is raised up 1.5" it goes straight up and not a little forward or backward or sideways. I put a mark on the visor to match up with the cardboard edge. The marker on the passenger side. The point of no return, I'm mounting this visor with 6 bolts so I had to make a few holes in the roof. The bolts I'm useing, I welded little flaps of metal on the bolts so their is no possibility the bolts will spin when fiberglassed in place. I cut a few pieces of wax paper just in case the epoxy I'm going to use drips. Then I mounted the 6 bolts. Test fitting the fiberglass piece on the bolts. You can see 5 of the six bolts in this picture Once I got the epoxy mixed and the visor set on the bolts I started to make a cardboard mold for the sides of the visor. You can see the line on the side of the visor where I have to trim the sides of the fiberglass I also marked out duplicates of each of these pieces so I can do the exact same shape on the drivers side.
Re: ST162-7254182 Sorry to hear about your mother, I know its" a very sad time for you, and doing the visor is a way of coping and taking your mind of it. I lost my grandma, about a month ago, like you said, watching her lose the will to live. She stopped eating, I think she was very tired. It is sad watching your own flesh and blood go like this, but its human nature. My father missed the exact moment when she entered the next dimension, and he was upset with himself. She was in her nineties, but it still sad. Your mother is doing well if shes 80, but obviously we want them to carry on as long as nature intended. All the very best matey, its coming along a treat. Now that you"ve got the holes in, theres no turning back!
Re: ST162-7254182 I made the mirrored clone piece today And I trimmed the fiberglass so now I can get a better picture of the overall shape I covered the new pieces with duct tape as I have previously found that fiberglass resin doesn't stick to duct tape. I also added some more reinforcing on the backside Rear roof view of the overall shape Other views
Re: ST162-7254182 Do you mean why did I raise it up 1.5"? Several reasons. 1) Its basically a big scoop I'm putting over the windshield so I want somewhere for the air to flow 2) Thats the style of my favorite one I had on a van once 3) I want to mount driving lights in it so I need room for that 4) It allows me more room to make ribs to give it strength while keeping it light weight. 5) I want to make the car more visible so I want to put brake & turn signals in the visor. I got 20 orange & 30 red 10mm 70,000mcd leds. That should be about as bright as you can get for LEDS
Re: ST162-7254182 I made some molds for the areas around the bolt holes And got the fiberglass molded And got a potential rear brake light in the mail. Its a bit big so I'll have to see if I use it or not
Re: ST162-7254182 I got holes drilled in those fiberglass strips I made and epoxied them to the nuts then I molded the sides of the visor. I remembered correctly and the duct tape covered corners peeled right of once the fiberglass was cured. Hopefully the headlights and Leds will be here pretty soon. I know the headlights cleared customs on sunday morning 8:58 am I have no tracking for the Leds A couple of pictures with the potential rear brake light
