Re: ST162-7254182 Well with the exception of the windshield frame the worst is over. Now its time to get rid of the rust. The weatherman is calling for 2 days without rain So I put the wheels back on to it and took it off the jack stands and waited for the mornings rain to dry up. Twins. I put up a couple of tarps to help contain the sand. Starting to look like a beach Passenger side rocker Pasenger side rear fender Front of passenger side rear fender well Back of passenger side rear fender well Passenger side rear quarter panel Back of passenger side Back of drivers side That was the worst side. That took 3 1/2 hours this afternoon. It gets dark around 5pm now so I quit. I'll put a new lens in the sand blasting hood and go over it again it was starting to get dark when I was doing some of that. The lens gets so scratched from rickocheting sand thats it soon becomes a piece of heavilly frosted glass, especially when you have to work in tight areas like rocker panels and fender wells. After dinner I went out and did the 2 rear strut towers inside the car. When I got out of the car it was raining....stupid weatherman. ugh
Re: ST162-7254182 These are pictures from tuesday night when I did some of the inside of the car. This is under the drivers side rear taillight. Back of the drivers side rear wheel well Drivers side rear strut tower Drivers side rear strut tower Front of the drivers side rear wheel well Drivers side rear seat floor Drivers side rear seat floor Passenger side hatch floor Passenger side rear strut tower Passenger side rear strut tower Passenger side rear wheel well Yesterday I got the drivers side rocker panel and rear fender and behind the front fender done and went over the passenger side areas again, what a pita it only got up to about 5 celcius yesterday and the sand blasting hood kept fogging up inside so although I had a nice clear new lens in the hood I had to stop every few minutes and clean the moisture of the inside of the lens. You got to really love your Celicas to do this kind of shit. Trying to stick your head up inside the rear fender while its inside the big sand blasting hood and get a light in their and the sand blasting gun isn't really fun and I could think of a million more enjoyable things I could be doing but hopefully it will help save this poor thing. I really should have removed the rear struts before I did the rear wheel wells/stut towers but I didn't so thats life even if I had of removed them it's still a nasty job to have to do. I much prefer when I can put parts in my booth. Then it got dark so I had to clean up the area and recover my sand so it doesn't get wet and hope that theirs 1 or 2 more nice days left this year. I had to quite on wednesday and recover all my sand cause I knew I was getting this pile of crap dumped on me thursday.....and they say global warming is a problem....it's not helping me
Re: ST162-7254182 Epic work Dave, keep it going. I've been following this thread closely and wanted to throw in some encouragement for ya.
Re: ST162-7254182 Well the weather didn't get any better today but hopefully the weather will get a bit better next week. But who knows weathermen are pretty 'useless' they can't even get the days of the week right so I hold out little hope for their weather forcasts Well I at least pulled the tarp back a bit to get a couple pictures of the drivers side. That fender was pretty much spotless when I finished so that just shows how quickly a bit of humidity in the air can put new rust in previously rusted areas. Drivers side rear fender Once again pretty much rust free when I finished sand blasting. Luckilly this is just a bit of surface rust and will come of real easy. Drivers side rocker panel Drivers side rear strut tower Drivers side rear strut tower
Re: ST162-7254182 you my man are amazing! bowdown your celica is making progress in epic leaps! thats all that needs to be said.
Re: ST162-7254182 Heres an example of what happens to the lens in the sand blasting hood. I picked something nice and bright to show you how crappy the lens gets. Yes the orange part is still behind the lens. This is the lens I was useing last tuesday. Picked up some more goodies for the car. Canadian tire had a 4 1/2" grinder accesory kit on sale for half price and the rocker guard was 25% off. I also decided that for this winter the car will be looking as evil as possible with a coat of flat black. It's to late in the fall/winter? to do a good paint job so I think its going to be the rat rod look for now. That can of rust check stuff is what I'm going to spray inside the rocker panels and inside the car on the srut towers and behind the rear wheel wells on the inside of the rear quarter panels and inside the car on the panel that goes from behind the door column to the rear wheel well. The blue/white box is another 8" round spool of .023" wire for my Mig welder.
Re: ST162-7254182 The drivers side door sill and rear seat floor pan was done last wednesday. The weatherman was hyping up sunday all week long so I reorganized my work so I didn't have to leave until 6pm on sunday to go to work. I started in the morning with a pic to remove the undercoating from seams. Then I sand blasted most of the passenger side floor. I decided that since its so late in the year and humidity is causeing new rust on previously sand blasted areas that I would end early enough to do a good cleanup and get a coat of rust check on the newly cleaned area. I didn't sand blast the rusty bit near the center of this picture cause its going to be cut out anyways. When I started sand blasting this car the bin was absolutely full of sand. I did a pretty good job of containing the sand to the work area so I guess the loss is just from sand that has been pulverized into oblivion.
Re: ST162-7254182 Dear god man, thats just off the scale, the work would shame a pro restorer!!! loving it
Re: ST162-7254182 After reacting with the metal for a day you can see that it has neutralized the rust
Re: ST162-7254182 Well this morning I got under the car and started to scrape off the undercoating where it was starting to peel away These are the tools I used underneath the car to scrape away the old undercoating Then it was back to sand blasting inside. Kind of reminds me of playing in the sandbox. I got the 2 rear strut towers and the hatch area done and started on the drivers side rear floor.
Re: ST162-7254182 Well this is from back on tuesday I got the car jacked up higher so I could do the underbody. I also got the inside back of the car finished except for the spare tire well. On wednesday I didn't get much done. I had to go pay my respects for remembrance day and then after the ceremony being its a small town lots of people you don't see very much show up. I did get the rest of the front passenger side foot well finished and started on the drivers side front floor. Thursday was alot better. Got the rest of the interior finished except the spare tire well and did the 2 rocker panels again and the drivers side rear wheel well. Just have the passenger side rear wheel well to redo and then get underneath and do the under body.
Re: ST162-7254182 Well I can see where their might be an end in sight to this sand blasting hell. Drivers side door sill Drivers side rear fender Drivers side rocker Inside drivers rear wheel well Inside drivers rear wheel well, fuel filler area Inside drivers rear wheel well, top of strut tower. Where you see green X's its not rust its the old undercoating which is still in good shape so I left it. Piss me off another hole in the roof right in front of the hatch Right in front of the drivers side hinge A few spots to clean up along the rear hatch area Drivers side front floor Passenger side front floor Passenger side door sill Passenger side rocker panel
Re: ST162-7254182 you are far more dedicated than i ever could be. congrats! i would have stripped her and scrapped the body.
Re: ST162-7254182 Thats a kind way of putting it. crazy Unfortunatly it doesn't end there. It gets worse. I found an Ottawa add for a coupe So that would meet my 2 requirements of being a coupe and being a GTS. So I'm trying to convince him that his baby should be restored or perhaps turned into something a little more radical. He said that the last time he had it up on a hoist a year ago the strut towers were still there. I'll have to drag myself down there and take a look at it.
Re: ST162-7254182 Yeah well I'm sure thats the excuse I'll be useing to get it in the yard and avoid a big fight with the wife about how many Celica's I own. cuss <---wife...me---> crazy <---wife...me---> toetap05 rant <---wife...me---> bs Then magically while its in the garage being stripped the bodywork gods come in and restore it. naughty
Re: ST162-7254182 I got the rest of the rust cut out of the passenger side front floor and the spare tire well Heres a couple of interesting pictures. When I blow compressed air on the inside of the window it leaks out along the bottom of the window between the 2 green lines where you can see the sand has been blown away. Obviously in addition to these windows not sealing along the top they also don't seal to well along the bottom The drivers side window was not sealed along the bottom between the 2 green lines and again between the 2 blue lines The spare tire well after sand blasting The inside top of the passenger side strut tower Back of the passenger side rear wheel well Top of the passenger side rear wheel well Front of the passenger side rear wheel well Any critical underbody parts like suspension mounting points were cleaned up Most of the seams were stripped of their undercoating and sand blasted Anywhere where their was a hole or the undercoating was pealing away was sand blasted Passenger side under the firewall All spots where a new panel needs to be welding in had their undercoating scraped away around the edge and sand blasted Hopefully I should get the sand blasting finished tomorrow. Just have the drivers side underbody left to sand blast. Its already been scraped
Re: ST162-7254182 One of you guys PM'd me this but the real purpose of a forum is to share information so just post questions in my thread and I'll try to answer them The replacement panels I have in place in this picture are 14 guage. You could probably get away with 16 guage. When I make the outer pieces for the rockers they could be done in either 18 or 20 guage As far as the hatch is concerned I have some rust on the drivers side bottom corner I will cut along the green line and probably use a piece of 14/16 guage to replace it. If I'm guessing right your problem is more in the center so if I asume the yellow spots are rust holes I would cut along the green line and bend up a right angled piece of 14/16 guage to replace it. You could get away with an 18/20 guage piece of metal but I always like to over engineer repairs.
