Don't believe here...want to swap it into mine but you will need the whole heating system in the car then..
I'm thinking of swapping to the cable type - The buttons are unreliable and the motors are starting to play up. Wiring it in will be a complete nightmare, over 30 wires and the manuals don't help much (my JDM's colour codes are different?) The "climate control" never works properly either, it's either waaay to cold or too damn hot. Fark knows how the "Economy" button works - never seen it make any difference on any of my cars There's even a "daylight sensor" on the dash and an ambient sensor below the bonnet catch, still have'nt a clue how or what they do as disconnecting them makes no difference. Also my two "identical" cars differ in that one has the rubber pipe to the room sensor from the airbox and on the other car it was sealed - both are climate control models?
Both JDM and USDM versions got them, but never seen one on an european model. As explained by Stig, it must be a nightmare to install this kind of A/C-heater control in an european 4gen
I saw a car yesterday with the cable system and now I'm kicking my ass I just put my dash back The cable system is foolproof, if something sticks, it's either the cable or something jammed somewhere With the electronic system it could be the control panel, bad connections, relays, fuses, the amp, or the motors?? I'm not trying to put the electronics down, this is just from my experience and as a lifelong car restorer I like to keep things as simple and reliable as possible 87-89 models, different panels & different wiring! There is also a black version which I think is the 86 version - yes different wiring also! The JDM's have automatic aircon switching when the AUTO button is pressed, when the ECON button is pressed the aircon switches off if the motor is under load These NADM versions lack the "Economy" mode found on JDM's The nightmare I inherited- all the colours where the same and nothing worked! The auto electrician would'n't even look at it(JDM's have strange wiring codes) My JDM had the control panel cut out, I tried wiring it back in - 2 yrs and 4 panels later I gave up. The kid I bought it from probably thought it would be fun to make the wires the same colours He also lost the key - so "removed" the ignition lock with a sledgehammer and didn't bother removing the column covers either. Kiwi ingenuity?
^^ wow sorry to hear and thay cable system seems nice ive got the auto electronic one and i swear its a ticking time bomb. and my dad had his truck stolen they took that idea of a sledge hammer to the ignition lock, we drove his ford for the next week starting it with a screwdriver,
really hu cool! And yeah the auto climate stuff is nice but sometimes the heat doesnt work, and this last week it didnt on the coldest days of the week.
The servo motors sometimes stick, you have to open the flaps and heat valve manually Sometimes it's the contacts on the heater control Check the archives, there's heaps of how-to's as it's an ongoing problem area
And now for something completely different! I finally got my interior functional again Before - stock blue interior During - Rustproofing, new dash vents, new wiring, alarm, tints etc After - It's a Gen 5 (ST182) interior in the Gen 4 TEMS, both seats are electric and more comfortable with better support than the Gen4 items. 4 Gen 5 seats - $11 courtesy of ebay! (gotta luv it) Black/grey is not a JDM option New aluminium boot cover, light & strong Carpet not yet fitted till I sort the wiring problems Here's the ashtray insert someone was asking about
Did you replace the rear seats with 5th gen seats also? Did you make or buy the aluminum privacy cover? Looks good. Any problems with the new seats fitting in? Is there even less room for people in the back or is it the same?
Cover I cut from 5mm ACM (Alu Composite Material - offcuts from any sign shop) and fitted the old brackets from my rotten cover It's covered with felt, you could use fleece, towelling etc. More pics of it on my car page Rear seat and door inserts come from my 1st Corona 162 coupe, for some weird reason they released a few with the same material as used in later ST182's. I think the convertible (JDM) is the same. I still have the grey Corona front seats but they are boring in comparison. Comfy as, but no lateral support or electrics Fitting the seats is a PITA, the 182's rails are closer together and the rear brackets are the same height. It meant cutting off all the brackets and swapping them out, you can't use spacers etc. Good news is I was able to create more legroom for my 6'4" self by moving the seat back slightly on the mounts. Interior space is the same as it's a 162 rear seat and the fronts are actually slightly narrower than the stock seats I've been wanting to do this since my spares car came with modded 202 seats, they had "CELICA" emdroidered in them but the blue/pink material was impossible to match
You have to strip them from a Corona, you need the bumper, grille & bonnet as well because the shape is curved, not flat like the Celi's. That's strange - did you re-locate the fusebox on the passenger firewall? Where's the heater/blower/aircon units? Never seen that interior here either
I removed the whole heater/air unit. The fuse box bolts right up to the blower motor mounting stud. Cleaned my engine bay up and all my fuses/relays are in a convenient location now. My engine harness runs out through the circular plug beneeth the steering rack. Do you know anyone who sells aftermarket corona lights? I live in America and don't think I would find a corona here. Especially one that would be getting parted out lol. I just need the headlights and possibly the grill then I can make my own body panels using composites.
I'm probably the only one with access to the Corona stuff, it's rare and expensive now. I can get but it's like $250 per side 2nd hand Dunno why you want no air/heat? that stuff has almost no weight. That black blanket weighs a ton though
That's a real shame, not having much contact with other ST162 owners. Its all very well talking and looking at photos with us, but nothing beats seeing Celicas in the metal. Do you think there is any chance of you ever driving your Celica to the UK ? I belong to the Toyota Enthusiast Club and every year we have a Belgium member drive over for a meeting.
