that's why i said supertech ones. non toyota. and they can be reshimmed if a cam change is in order, unlike the shimless (which sucks for me at 16 bucks each)
Got any pics? I'm also deciding for the next motor, right now I'm biased to the under bucket OEM's, I paid $18p/shim for gen1 shims but Toyota no longer can supply
Ok. After doing some checking Ive narrowed down my choices for Cams. All around the same price, any pros or cons on any of them? The only thing I found on Brian Crower is that they claim you have to use their valvetrain. Im going with all Ferrera valves, springs and retainers. Shouldnt make a difference in my book, Im just guessing its their way of getting you to buy their stuff. You'll have to get gen2 cams for the gen2 head, with 9.9mm of lift you'd be crazy not to upgrade the springs. You could convert it to gen3 valves/cams but you'd need to swap out the valves, retainers, springs, buckets and shims as well Gen3 retainers
Absolutely. ive already got ferrera springs, retainers and valves. i was just curious if any of these cams brand wise were better than the other. Also everything so far is gen 2 including the head.
Id love to go HKS, but I just cant justify the extra 350 for them when these others will do the exact same thing.
call ferrea and check your specific part on those valves. a lot of them are on recall. i believe they were all 6000 series any of those 3 cams are good. although i remember something about the BC cams breaking but that was a while ago. most gen 2 are running gsc IIRC.
Swell, Im pretty sure they are 6000 series. I think they were just ordered. Im pretty sure the shop was getting them directly from Ferrea. Hopefully they have them fixed.
Just stopped at the engine shop and they are not 6000 series valves. They are comp plus so that is good. Also, wanted to throw this out there? Should I have the valve guides replaced? They are steel from the factory and the clearances seem to check out. Although I havent seen anything out there that is a replacement short of OEM. Also, looking at the valve seals. Supertech has two, Viton and Polyacrylic. Any ideas on which one?
i beleive i used vitron. not sure on that one. whatever the hell gates seals are. comp+ are good, no worries. if the guides are good then no worries
Always use viton, and use viton O-rings if you can get They are better at handling heat. I'd leave the valve guides if they are within spec
Interestingly enough, according to the BGB the valve guides are considered a non-reusable part. As long as the clearances do check out with the valves, Im not going to switch them out. The motor only had like 60k on it when I got it. I havent found any aftermarket ones, and Im guessing they might be hard to come by via Toyota as well....
And you can buy valve guides on the net. Hey Stig, how do they get the old ones out ?, 'punch' from the bottom ? My little brother had his 5th gen 2.2 litre engine recoed 2 blocks from me, I'm gonna drop in and have a quick chinwag.
You just knock them down with a punch When I build heads I like to cut the guides shorter and flush them with the ports for better breathing, it's not as reliable but who cares when you're looking for ponies
Stig, Do you have a good picture of the head looking down in the valve guides or an exploded view from the BGB on the Gen2? I only have books for a Gen1 3SGTE and it shows that there is a snap ring around the valve guide under the valve seal. I dont remember seeing that on my gen2 head. Unfortunately its been 5+ years since I tore it down. Or does anyone have a good image of the all the parts for a Gen 2 3SGTE head. Worse case, I can probably hit up the Toyota dealer and see if they will print me out the breakdown.
