I've read through quite a few of Stig's threads and noticed that the flywheel size is different on s53 and s54 transmissions. I believe i currently have an s53 (not sure how to tell.) I am going to be doing a 3s-gte swap in the future but just want to make sure i have everything planned out BEFORE i even start purchasing. My question is whether the flywheel that comes on a 3sgte will work with the s53 trans or if i will need to get an s54. I've also heard stuff about using a V6 Camry trans, would that work with this motor? and my last question is regarding the MR2 trans. Several of the motors i have looked at are from MR2's and include the trans. Wouldnt that work as a FWD trans? I'm pretty sure it would require some modifications for the shifter cables though, is that correct?

Nice to see somebody actually reads and takes notes for a change :D

It's a f/d up subject because the S52, S53, S54 are the same box and there are many variations.
For our purposes I'll call the gen1 GE S53, and gen1 FE S54 (technically the same as GE/FE gen 5)

I swapped the S53 and now run a Gen5 S54 box on my car using a GTE flywheel, details/pics on my thread

GTE flywheel won't work with S53 but will with S54, same goes for FE flywheel which is lighter than the GTE flywheel btw.

Camry/Solara V6 "E" box works with 3S/4S/5S motors - you need the gen4 GTE/FE flywheel plus the V6 shafts, ST165/FE starter, 165 cables, speedo drive, clutch - Mafix uses this setup, pics/info on his thread

MR2 is the best FWD bet, you need the MR2 inner shafts, ST165/185 outer shafts, ST165/185 selector mech (I have one listed for sale), the ST165/185 cable brackets, cables & levers, flywheel, clutch, chassis mounts, mechanical speedo drive
Basically you need to buy an MR2 box, shafts + a busted ST165/185 box & shafts for the bits you need
I have been discussing the MR2 swap in depth on my thread recently as I'm converting a GT4 box into FWD using a MR2 box/shafts

    FWIW...

I'm running a '95 SW20 transmission in my swap (it's an e153 tranny). I am using the st165 outer shafts and the mr2 inner shafts for my axles. The speedo is off a 185, but the shifter cables, bracket, etc is all from my st162

    I don't agree
95 SW20 has an electronic speedo, so does the ST185
The S53/4 box doesn't have a cable bracket, the cables mount into castings
The S53/4 cables have thicker bushes, you must be using spacers to secure the cables
You don't mention the selector/link/mounting swap?

how's the e153 different from the s boxes regarding the speedo being electronic/mechanical?
i had an electronic one from my '97 5sfe s54 that i simply changed over to mech by using the one in my s53 3sge

For the S boxes it's easier, early Camry, Corona etc all had mechanical but on the E box it's only the ST165 that had a mechanical drive and they are rare now.
E box drive is at the back, a lot bigger and has a metal tube

    S54
    [IMG]

E15x Here you can see the electronic drive out the back and the thin metal plate cable holder

Well all I know is this.

Someone on Celicatech was parting out a st185.

I asked for the shift selector assembly (both the bracket and the unit that goes in the transmission along with the breather and securing bolt) and the speedo assembly.

They arrived, I installed. I'm using my st162 cables, cable bracket, cable clips, etc. I'm using a st165 rear transmission mount bracket.

    back on topic lol

So basically all i need to do is purchase a MR2 Trans and swap over parts from my s53?
I would just need to swap the selector mech, mounts, cable brackets, and speedo mech? The cables and all that are still in my car. I am also going to do a new clutch since my current one is slipping under the minimal power of a 3sfe.

My hope is to get a JDM MR2 motor and tranny as a package then just swap what i need onto the trans and install the whole thing at once.

Scott - You can't use any S53/54 parts on a E15x, please read my original reply re buying 2 boxes
Your easiest/cheapest route is the Solara box & shafts & cables & clutch & FE flywheel with GT4 speedo drive

Entrax - The S speedo gears are swappable, check you're using the same colour/size gear but the E15x has a different drive - only the ST165 afaik has the mechanical version. So unless you find a scrap GT4 box you will have to swap/convert the speedo like 4thgen has done. I remember Mafix had hassles finding one too
I wish he had done a proper write-up, I've had to learn all this the hard way the last couple of months
    http://www.st162.net/forum/showthre...uot-Nemesis-quot&p=45199&viewfull=1#post45199

4thgen - I'd like to see your cable mounts, something fishy there. I'm guessing you swapped out the dash?
You're using the MR2 top mount? I'm told the GT4 rear mount will only bolt to a ST165 crossmember, is this true?

E15x speedo drives look like this - sofar found 2 types and the electronic add-on
    [IMG]

This what you need for the 4th gen speedo

My speedo looks nothing like that. Mine has the cable and then an electrical plug. not sure what the plug wire runs too....

Now you are confusing me....First you said I could swap the items i listed in my last reply to a MR2 box, then you said i cant swap ANY parts into an "E" box. Is the supra an "E" box? Please explain. Thanks

It's possible that they installed the cable and then the electronic sender (wires too short?).
The sender in my pic bolts direct to the drive housing and the other is a 1 piece unit on later models (ST205 -)

There may be other types, the ones in the photo are all I've been able to find (and sold some for huge profit)
The electronic types are prone to failure and difficult to replace

I don't know what all the hubbub about the E series tranny is. I'm running an LSD E56 out of the ST202.

All I needed to make the swap work was the ST165 rear bracket, ST165 tranny case top bracket, ST165 cables, and the ST165 speedo. So those parts + an E series will suffice. Of course if it is an E series out of an MR2 you're going to have to do what 4thgenceli did (I'd go specifically to him for advice if an MR2 tranny is what you purchase).

As stated, you can have an LSD up front along with triple synchro'd 1st, double synchro'd 2nd, and a double synchro'd reverse.

These models in the US will supply you with an E Series:

Thanks for the info Kev, we've pretty much covered all the questions that were asked.
The box you have (Beams) is the ultimate FWD box, rare and extreemly expensive though.

One correction - there is no reverse syncro's on any of the Celica boxes - W series, C series, S series or E series
The correct way to engage reverse on all these boxes is to hold the clutch down for a few seconds before engaging reverse and allowing the box time to slow down sothat the intermediate (idler) gear can mesh with the gears on both shafts and change the rotation of the secondary shaft/diff.

I don't think the box type is the hubbub, for 99% of us the main criteria is to get a refurb - I see too many of these boxes with gears grinding and jumping out of gear and it will only get worse in the years to come.
I've also lately seen a few where the teeth were broken off the gears or the gear itself shattered - this can only happen when there is too much play in the gearbox!

The S series is perfectly fine for most of us, provided it is rebuilt it is good for all applications under 400hp and has a huge weight advantage over the E series.
The LSD diffs available for the later MR-S will fit the S series, so there is an option available
I'm struggling to find accurate gear ratio data on both the S and E boxes but I'm sure the S series has far more ratios available.
The FWD E series box, clutch & shafts weighs roughly the same as an entire motor.

One concern is there have been a number of S series driveshaft breakages recently, all were snapped near the outside CV under hard take-off and I'm not sure if this is an early indication of metal fatigue or not.
My recomendation is to fit the later ST182 shafts which are thicker if you want to do any form of drag racing

All these boxes are at least 12-25yrs old, a ripe old age in gearbox terms and ALL should be refurbed before fitting (unless it came from a low km crashed car)
The same goes for driveshafts and wheel bearings.

I think many guys are looking replace damaged S series boxes cheaply without realizing that the gearchange on the E boxes can be just as bad or worse.
All of the C/S/E boxes I've opened in the last few years have shown damage in some form which needed repairing - the parts needed can often cost more than what you paid for the box

the middle one with the electrical "add-on" is the st185 type, you just unscrew the elec add-on and screw on your cable. bang all done.

the only reaon to fit an sw20 gearbox is if you find one with LSD, otherwise your still going to have massive torque steer.

the s54, altho not as beefy is hard to find with an LSD, maybe try the various mr2 or beams versions. or fit a quaiffe ATB to your s54. this will do much to prolong the life and usability of the car.

the open diff is norm what gets destroyed.

and yes rebuild is best if you can afford it. you never know what kind of life a gearbox has had.

I enjoy leaving dual black stripes through 3rd gear and just at the start of 4th.

speaking of lsd...i have a s54 from supposedly 97 celica with 5sfe...i've been told it's not lsd, but no matter how i do it, burning out always leaves two identical lines of rubber.

this wasn't the case with the original s53 trans where it would always be one or the other wheel spinning...is there something else to that bar in the middle of my s54 box that doesn't exist in the s53?

should i just not complain? :D

stig: sorry i forgot that sw20s don't have s boxes and they only had e boxes, now it makes sense!

scott: the simplest would be a 3s-fe box...i wonder how long they'll last ;P

Sounds like it does have LSD? I'm told the factory LSD's aren't very good though
The bar is for the pinions, evidently the late S54 has it with LSD and the S53's have it without LSD (God, I sound like a dealer!)

Why complain? sounds like a win?

S53/4 FE box = GE box, there's no difference apart from ratio's/starters. GE has better inner CV's

SW20 - turbo has E153, the GE has S54. We don't have them but I believe some countries also got 4A-FE with C5x boxes.
What's real weird is the auto's all have a long 1 piece RHS driveshaft?

the s54 that was originally attached to a 5sfe will have longer ratios, prob more suited to a turbo conversion than an s54 that was attached to a 3sge.

all s54's have the bar down the middle, the LSD version is a thicker bar without chamfered edges, you can barely see past it. i thought i posted pics somewhere else.

there are many different "factory" LSD's, early sw20 turbo had a mechanical type, later had a viscous, and s54's had torsen types.

There is only two types. Mechanical = helical = torsen. And viscous.
There can be different models, but only two working principle.
