BTW , your celica is one of my favourite on the whole site!

Cheers Sean, the original wheel i had was a bit worn out,and i find the slightly smaller one is more comfortable as well,i feel a bit more connected to the car ,might just be me.And yeah i intend to have the car completely polybushed as soon as poss

Hi guys quick update.Had a great 2 day weekend at the JAE show at Wicksteed park this weekend with the CelicaClub.co.uk. Brilliant time, and CJN picked up CCUK Best Gen4 trophy for 2012 to go with the 2011 one, well pleased with that! Also SteveC was awarded "Best Original Celica",and with the amount of different gens in that club it was a great prize for him and richly deserved too.

    some pics

Yes. I believe that's important in building a custom car.
Don't follow the herd and do "your" thing, the car has come a long way so well deserved and I think Rich knows that.

Too many stickers for my liking on a road car, at least you are using what you are advertising.
Your car would fail MOT here btw, there's no cover on the battery or alternator + terminals

what's the little box in front of the coolant overflow and beside the alternator?

Stig, thanks for the input and comments, interesting what you say about the MOT...i have been meaning to replace the terminal cover for the + on my battery,i dont like it open.Alternator cover ,assume you mean the terminal one ,yep again it was split when i got the car ,eventually was no good so need to replace also.

Entrax, that little box i'll have to check myself actually. It has warnings about getting hot,it does seem to be some kind of heatsoak unit but could be wrong

Holy crap has it been this long since i updated my thread?Hang my head in shame...

To be fair not a lot had happened since i last posted, and then i kind of acheived a fair bit...

First off, there were two things that Stig would approve of.Firstly,i ordered a new battery terminal cover and fitted it!I also had a problem with my alternator getting REALLY hot and starting to melt the insulation on the power cable....so i tested the battery, the alternator was charging the battery fine, reading around 14.5v so it was doing its job.Took the alternator off and found a specialist to take it to.He tested it and found the terminal where the little 10mm nut bolts the power cable to,had worked loose INSIDE the unit...so he replaced it all,put brand new fitting in,tested the alternator and said it was fine....charged me 10 pounds which was more than cool.Re fitted and working good, plus i've fitted a cover for the terminal in question,so i might stand a chance of passing a New Zealand MOT LOL

Next job,I had a peice of my rear wheelarch that id had repaired twice before, but rust will always come back so i needed to finally get it done. So,i booked it into a bodyshop a CCUK member had used before, and also asked them to redo the repair patches on the rear of each sill that were fitted before i bought the car. They looked solid enough but were a bit of a messy weld TBH.I also wanted the rear bumper to be repainted and have the black stripe reinstated as the previous owner(s) had resprayed it but in solid red.

So a bit of a list, basically some welding to do,also repair some bubbles to the Drivers side rear arch..so in essence a back end respray!

The bubbles werent really viable to keep repairing so they were cut out...any rust was cut, binned and new metal put in.A few pics...

Not pretty. Some extra fabrication needed on the rear of the sill in the last pic,the last person had welded over the top of rust,so there was a hole working its way unseen into my inner sill...luckily caught it in time so new small box section cut to size and fitted. Then, once all bits removed including trim it was time to prepare and paint.Waxoyl also pumped in.The black finish on the bottom of the car has continued right around the car nice and evenly so it 'flows' now, rather than have odd steps of black on red.I like the red/black contrast of the 162.If i had a 165 with a bodykit, i would probably colour code the whole car as it looks right on th Turbo model. But on my car,i like the colour broken up a bit.Plus there is a little extra protection for the bottom of the car from stone damage.

A vast improvement!really happy with the finish and the paint match to the rest of the car is pretty damn good, especially as its red.I can actually say that at the moment theres no rust at all on any of my body panels, arches, wings doors or sunroof! Its an ongoing mission to keep it that way but as it stands im amazed.Only issue was they broke the clips that hold the trim in that sits underneath the rear side windows...which i got some money back on.(Look closely on these pics i took before i refitted them you can see theyre missing)Toyota still supply those so for £13 i bought 6 and refitted them myself, also took the opportunity to touch up spray the trims and corner piece in satin black...nice.

That second Stig pleaser?Stickers had to come off....! :) Looks a nice clean line on the car again...i may leave it stickerless....for now...

No, your car is no longer a fire hazard
I like the cleaner look - call me a purist, old fart etc....
    lol

Nice job, I believe the MOT guys are also pretty strict on rust over there?

Those wheel spacers are also banned over here - too many guys using them without enough stud thread for the nuts to grip on?

Really impressed with the photos, and the colour match looks fab, how much was it in all?

do you know whats up with the celica -club website at the mo?

  16. thesherv

    thesherv Well-Known Member Donated!

Well the welding, prep and paint set me back about £520 in all. Was a fair bit of fabrication to do to the lower sills and the wheelarches so i suppose its not a bad price for a full back end paint/repair job.All round the rear lights, spoiler corners etc etc.
I was away in Sweden till monday,so i only found out about the CCUK site problem on tuesday..dont do Facebook but Ben has said that it seems it may have been hacked again so i asume its shut down while they secure the server.Other than that i dont know,i dont do Facebook but apparently thats where the info came from

cheers Stig,i thought you'd appreciate the cleaner look.Yeah MOT guys vary a bit from place to place....a friendly one who's a bit of an old skool enthusiast is a bonus if you find one. Its all about interpretation of the rules:though some things are non negotiable:

Sharp edges on rusty areas are a no no,like jagged arches, and anything that looks too far gone and could cause injury to a pedestrian, and anything that is classed as 'compromising structural integrity' will fail.
Wheel spacers, mine are there as the design of the wheels i have seem closer to the caliper than i liked, they are only about 5mm so theres plenty of thread there.Certainly wouldnt be happy running anything thicker.TBH i could probably do away with them if i wanted to.

Yeah, I ran the same 5mm rear spacers for a long time but took them off after being warned to.
Need to buy me some 20mm spacers with studs for the rears

man really great work man! I like the clean/slick work and doing the job right the first time!
I wanted to ask if you could get a closer pic of the windshield, the rubber strip in genius and I would love to do that out here.
