I am curious as to how many Celicas came with ABS? Also is there a quick easy way to find out if the car has ABS?
Accelerate up to about 45, 50mph. Slam on the brakes. Do the brakes lock up or does the brake pedal pulsate? If the answer is no and yes, you have ABS. Or you can just look at your brakes. If there is an electrical wire from the brakes, you have ABS.
I know my celica is non ABS, just curious if in the future I look at another one is there an easy way to tell. I guess the wire to the pad is good info. Thanks! Sometimes people disconnect the ABS systems on these, so I wouldn't trust the slamming of the brakes... or if I test drove someone's celica that is selling they might not like that hahah.
The only JDM I know of with ABS is Fernando's, while all JDM gen5's have it. Seems you guys got plenty of them. Easiest way is to lift the hood - you'll see the ABS unit sitting next to the alternator I don't think it would be wise or easy to convert, there's a computer under the rear seat, different hubs, sensors etc. While looking for a pic I noticed this - can anyone tell me what this resistor thingy is next the the overflow bottle on the UK cars?
Wow, that sucker is big. I guess that is what I was looking for. No, not swapping, just started randomly thinking about it because when I went to order brakes they wanted to know if I had ABS or not. I didn't think it was such a common option, but maybe it is?
Remember, Stig's is the Aussie version. Your NADM 165 will won't have the ABS located there; instaed you'll see the cruise control in that spot. IRCC, the ABS on your NADM will be under the rear seat bench. BTW, my 165 has ABS; my 86GTS and 89GTS do not. In Canada, I've rarely ever seen it on the 162 and always on the 165.
Yep, it's f'kn huge :lol I have ABS with the Acuator and the ECU under the rear seat because I have cruise control.
You are correct my cruise control is in that spot. I wonder how much the abs adds to the car weight wise....dang I can't get over how big that thing is.
I collected all the parts with the mindset that I would convert either my non-ABS ST165 or my ST162. They are still sitting in a box and I reckon it weighs ab out 60lbs.
rickstar22's square one has abs as well it's a st162 gt-s, the only north american st162 i've heard of with abs
It was only an option so most people didn't opt for it. I don't think it became standard until 1990. Back in the 80's most people were unfamiliar with it, didn't understand it, didn't want to pay for it, or all of the above. Although rare, they are around in the States. I've only seen one myself.
to the best of my knowledge in NADM 162's prefacelift abs is very very rare post facelift abs is far more common. and on that note there is a difference in the front calipers for abs and non abs NADM 165's a no abs 165 here is about as rare as a no sunroof. you have to get either an ordered one or a very low model number
My 165 has ABS but no sunroof. I don't miss it; more headroom and no malfunctioning or leaky sunroof to deal with.
lol - ther must b an easier and safer way thn that! i ll go and see if my JDM Convrtible come up with an ABS light in the dash now......
