How common is ABS on the Gen4 Celica?

Accelerate up to about 45, 50mph. Slam on the brakes. Do the brakes lock up or does the brake pedal pulsate? If the answer is no and yes, you have ABS.

Or you can just look at your brakes. If there is an electrical wire from the brakes, you have ABS.

 

Are you thinking about switching to ABS or something?

 

The only JDM I know of with ABS is Fernando's, while all JDM gen5's have it.
Seems you guys got plenty of them.
Easiest way is to lift the hood - you'll see the ABS unit sitting next to the alternator


I don't think it would be wise or easy to convert, there's a computer under the rear seat, different hubs, sensors etc.

While looking for a pic I noticed this - can anyone tell me what this resistor thingy is next the the overflow bottle on the UK cars?

 

Remember, Stig's is the Aussie version. Your NADM 165 will won't have the ABS located there; instaed you'll see the cruise control in that spot. IRCC, the ABS on your NADM will be under the rear seat bench.
BTW, my 165 has ABS; my 86GTS and 89GTS do not. In Canada, I've rarely ever seen it on the 162 and always on the 165.

I have ABS with the Acuator and the ECU under the rear seat because I have cruise control.

 

I collected all the parts with the mindset that I would convert either my non-ABS ST165 or my ST162. They are still sitting in a box and I reckon it weighs ab out 60lbs.

 

rickstar22's square one has abs as well it's a st162 gt-s, the only north american st162 i've heard of with abs

 

I saw a 162 with ABS in a junkyard once and was like, "what the Hell is that?!"

 

It was only an option so most people didn't opt for it. I don't think it became standard until 1990. Back in the 80's most people were unfamiliar with it, didn't understand it, didn't want to pay for it, or all of the above. Although rare, they are around in the States. I've only seen one myself.

 

yep rickstar has it. ive seen maybe 25 162's in the yard and only 1 with abs.

 

I have one without either.....crazy huh?

 

My 165 has ABS but no sunroof. I don't miss it; more headroom and no malfunctioning or leaky sunroof to deal with.

 

stiggles, euro celicas have there overflow bottle beside the battery
