Suspension/placement/Stance

I've got a question about how stance and how the suspension is "placed".
I'd appreciate it greatly if someone can clarify just how this is accomplished.
    I'm talking about this:

I know the tire is larger.
    The stance is wider.
The tire placement is higher and thus lowers the car.
    What I don't know is:
Can this be accomplished with the stock setup? Maybe add a few things like a massive spacer?
Or is this purely custom and I'd have to go to means of building a new base for the wider and lower stance?
Or perhaps I can add larger and WIDER tires, coilovers(to lower the car). Perhaps this will be as close as possible to the IMSA? (But then wouldn't there be steering problems...?)
How exactly and what exactly is done to achieve this stance?

Notice how high the fender is compared to the hood. This is what I'm talking about. How can this be done(the stance/suspension)?

Here is the rear. Notice how much higher the fender is, not to mention how much more wider the fender is as well. How can this be done? What modifications made this possible? Again, is this possible with coilovers/larger tires and just flare out the fenders?

I'd love to have this stance for my 162. Ofcourse not too low as I'd love to have my car for daily use as well. Sorry for all the questions. What I'm going to do to these cars in the future is crazy, but this car is my art piece.
    Pros. Cons. Suggestions?
    Thanks guys.

the largest problem with this is finding a RWD offset 5x100 wheel. if you find those i can easily tell you about the rest

basiccally youve got something very similar to a nascar there. tube frame car with a spring an shock setup (as opposed to mcphearson strut). if you could find the rules for that class/year youd be able to get a very good idea of what the suspension dimesions are as they are all limited by rule. youd look at track/tire width, wheelbase, and hieght. then make the body fit.
-if youve seen the show "madhouse" thats pretty much what you looking at with a body on it.
-back in the day the rules were a bit more open. you basically have a custom tube frame car with some sort of (insane) yota motor in it, kinda shaped like a celica.
-the rules in nascar now are so strict that all the cars are basically the same thing even if the manufacturer is different. anybody seen the "jig" they use to spec the bodys? really the only variance you have is the way the bumper is molded to look like a specific brand, even that is severly limited so its only cosmetic. supposed to start drastically changing over the next few years, as they try to move back to the "race on sunday, sell on monday" mantra.

I knew it was gonna be tube frame, expensive stuff :banghead .

    @mafix

but he wants the look not the function. so no need for a tube frame.

Both actually. I just want to know how it's done so I can educate myself when I'm gonna actually get down with this stuff not too long from now.

For more details on this car go to Dan Gurney's All American Racers web site, there you will find the history of the Celica GTO cars and the people who built them. Also check out Speedhunters and their Toyota only car section, put in IMSA GTO Celicas and there you'll find more info! If that doesn't get you everything you need to know, check out HSR's site (Historic Sportscar Racing), they are the leading Sanctioning Body for Historic IMSA cars from all decades!

I'm building a very simular car, for NASA racing but with no turbo and less fiberglass body work. However my car will have the over-all look of the IMSA car. As for wheels, you can have custom made wheels of any bolt pattern and offset, but your looking at big bucks (cubic bucks in race speak). I'm going to run XXR 002s with a 1 1/2" outer lip, but they do have wheels with more outer lip in their 4-100mm bolt pattern, somewhere between 2 1/2"-3".

Good luck and happy parts hunting!!

Did some more research, and these IMSA Celicas ran 16"x12" front and 16"x12.5" rear wheels. You can get 16"x8" XXR 002s in 5-100mm bolt pattern with a 3.5" outer lip. Go to http://www.nlmotoring.com to check out these wheels.

Wow man thanks for all the info!! Really appreciate. Yup, big big bucks, that I will eventually afford haha. You have a build thread somewhere for your project? Very interested to see :drool5

Hey man, this project has been so long and drawn out, that post I've put out in the past don't even show up in the forums anymore. I first started this whole crazy deal back in like 2005 and had it on track in 2006-2008, but suffered an engine failure in late 2008, which caused me to put the car on the back burner for a while. I have recently gotten back on this project and am putting together a race shop at the same time. So when time permits, I work a little on the car then work a lot on the shop. Pretty soon it will all come together and the racecar build will be in full swing with hopefully an end date in sight. I will try to post more pics and info as the car starts to take shape and starts to look like a real racecar!

Been looking for this type of info for the past few months.

I think it'll be pretty easy for James if he's going with a widebody type of look.
Here are options that I've found:

-adapters to convert your 5x100 to 5x114.3, which has a ton of options including RWD offset wheels.
    -redrilling the wheels to 5x100.
-redrilling the hub to 5x114.3 (Still doin a bit more research on this. Don't know too much about it yet)
-Swapping hubs with a 5x114.3 car. (Don't know much about this either.)

The adapter option is probably the cheapest. Only reason why I personally haven't done that already is because I want 0 offset wheels without having to get fender flares or have excessive negative camber. (adapters pushes your wheels out, thus making the offset too low to fit under/behind the fenders.) It should work perfectly for James' plans though.

Diamond Racing Wheels also can make wheels to whatever specs you want for a pretty low price. Only problem is that their wheels are a tad heavier than your standard wheels.

If you look at bigger, 17-18" wheels, you'll probably have even more 5x100 options since most of the Subaru guys and some of the Audi and Volkswagen guys have the same bolt pattern, and there are plenty of those guys running low offset wheels.

    Hope that helps. :)
