Ok I have the famous celica starter problem. I went and bought the relay and that doesn't help. It still doesn't work. The relay clicks and all but doesn't work. I have to sit there and turn the key 30-50 times before it will start. I also tried to take a wire from the starter motor wire to the positive terminal and it doesn't crank over. I need some help is there a starter switch I can replace.

u did do the relay trick properly right? which is to boost the signal to not the positive but to the ignition of the starter right? :)

if so make sure your positive and such are not in bad shape.... check batt voltage....

You might have a bad relay....

    Double check your wiring-

Okay first make sure the car is in neutral then if you can run a wire from the plug circled in red to the the battery and your starter does nothing then either your starter is faulty or the starter is not grounded. The bolt above this plug if for your heavy duty 12 volt cable direct to the battery. I think this is a Trac starter but the plug and 12V connector are the same.

If the starter does not turn you need to take this part of the starter appart to look at the solenoid. Specifically the part circled in red. And a couple of contacts inside the casing shown later.

You want to look at the piece of the solenoid outlined in red. This can become pitted and coroded over time. You can clean it up with some sand paper or a file. Its just an electrical contact.

The other part you want to look at is the 2 pieces outlined in red that contact the part in the picture above and again over time can become pitted and coroded. Once again clean them up with some sand paper or a file or check with Toyota as they can sometimes get a rebuilt kit for a starter.

The above mentioned pitting and corrosion will cause an intermittent starter problem. Sometimes the plunger will make good contact and the starter will work and most of the time pitting or corrosion will get in the way and cause the starter to malfunction.

^ that sounds like the problem I'm having with my 5g, except even after t's started sometimes its really rough and I have to give it gas to keep it alive. once I get going for a min or so it's fine. it happens completely at random.
