That valve is a temperature VSV like the 2 I found on the White Lightning the other day (see my thread).
Was your motor smoking? looks like the stem seals, rings etc were bye-bye anyway

That gasket cleaner will clean all that carbon crap out easy

The water you see is probably just from when you lifted the head and not an indication of what happened

Shoot, thats a bit of work, but it looks save able.

Good chance to learn, and have to echo, def get both mating surfaces sorted, so you can fit and forget the new HG coolgleamA

ok time for a progress report. car is still in bits but is ready to be put back together. Have had fuck all time and when i do find time thats when dad doesnt have any to come and help me plus the car being about 45mins away doesnt help anywho.

Checked the valve seals and surprisingly/thankfully there fine. Took the head to my mechanic for him to inspect (my mechanic is my dads best mate for 30 odd years and have helped him/watched him doing back yarders almost every saturday of my life so trust him very much). He gave it a quick poor man skim no sign of pitting. Then checked the surface for trueness. Now im not gunna lie the surface is not perfect but by no means a cause for concern. He was quite happy with the valves and believes id be wasting time and money having the head sent away. i and dad agree with him.

I spent literally 2 solid days (16 hrs or so each) at the factory cleaning parts and doing some other general shit to her. i spent minimum 6 hrs cleaning the head alone. oh yer and screw regular degreaser and kero. "Easy of bam" is the shit! brakes through the carbon and sludge very well, just work quick anything longer then 5 minutes and it eats alloy quicker then a fatty with a wedding cake.

theres still a minute bit of shit on the valves but it aint going anywhere. And the manifold leak i had months and months back really ruined the finish on the head :( .

Organising parts has taken a while but thats coz i had a mate helping me out big time on prices. Iv saved literally about $450 compared to retail prices. He even managed to hunt me down a full VRS kit on clearance , was $230 i got it for $40!
    new bits include
    - water pump
    - Gates timing belt kit
    - Full ACL VRS head kit
    - Fuel Filter
    - Oil filter

still gotta buy another oil filter as il swap this one out after doing a couple of flushes with some shit oil and kero. Also still need to pick up a shit load of radiator flush its filthy and a whole heap of random size hosing to replace the corroded items.

gave some bits a good coat of paint :)

Also changed to the black post series seats from the car jimmy and i have been wrecking the front seats are fairly faded but the bolstering is mint. My old seats were fucked. There was no padding left on the lumbar support so i used to cop a metal rod in my spine depending on how i sat. Both seats wouldnt go any more upright then 45 degrees and the passenger side used to just change adjustment when ever it felt like it haha.

Jimmy helped me change to my black dash (muc easier when theres some one on the other end haha). Pulling out the old dash = easy, putting the new dash in place = easy, dealing with the monumental fuck up of wiring behind the dash = me swearing, drinking and smoking enough to make the devil himself cry.

the pictures dont do it justice
    behind drivers side kick panel
    [IMG]

behind centr console (most of the loom spread so doesnt look as bad)

by the looks of it this car has gone through 2 different alarms and probably about 6 different stereo installs all with all the wiring left behind. that much extra wiring i coul barely even get to the plugs to unplug the extra wiring!

    black dash
    [IMG]

oh and also my starters been playing up rescently, have to give it a smack about once a month when its freezing cold. Have one that should be fins so i shall swap that over to.

looking great mate, hell of a lot of work, but should be on the home straight.

Make sure you can flush the hell outa the block and rad, as bet your bottom dollar there will be shed loads of crap in there.

I use a similar cleaner called cillet bang, works amazing, but as you say, eats everything too!!

While you have the rad out, re do the side and bottom insulation, to give it an air tight seal, makes a difference, on my fan shroud there is similar stuff as well to stop air leaks. I use window insulation tape, doubled up, cheap as frigging chips and takes only 2 mins to fit.

You going to do the Thermostat to?? easy enough swap with everything in bits?

funny you should say that. iv had a feeling my thermostat is fooked for a while and it sure looks like crap so i think i shall.

Insulation on the radiator i dont follow? im also finding it hard to build a mental picture of wat it looks like atm

Where the rad edges meet up with the body work when its in place, the two sides and the bottom edge. there is a small few mm thick gap once the rad is bolted in. By running some insulation, a strip of foam tape in that gap, you stop the air bleeding away from the rad, and not going to work cooling your engine coolant. Its a small but worth while improvement, as you force all the air though the rad. As you have the rad out its worth doing. costs like 50p for the tape an 2 minutes to do.
I also did the fan shroud too, where it bolts on to the rad, just to make the most of the fans work.

Re: Rev heads work in progress * did someone say GTE?*

ok so early thismorning like 3 am or so i got to the factory to strip out all the sound deadener from the back seats back.
in the process iv discovered something, at some point the whole right side of my car has had new panel welded in! you heard me. When i got the car i noticed bad sealer work in the engine bay close to the fire wall and noticed a part of the head light assembly had been strightened. Thought meh not a bad job who cares. A while ago a noticed a tiny bit of non genuine sealer on the back panel didnt think much of it. After taking the sound deadening out of the boot i noticed a nice long fat weld underneath it. its a clean weld only noticed coz its started to surface rust. MOTHER F***ER. So i move onto the area underneath the back seats. I removed the SD from the bulded up section in the middle. WTF OXY SCORCH MARKS??? and a very nasty and rough as guts job of smoothing it out. By this stage i was a little worried but mainly confused. I eagerly stripped back the Right side SD from under the seats and well il be fu**ed the weld runs all the way up to the start of the 1/4 panel and this one has begun to rust. luckily nothing a good grind back cant fix. give it 5 years and it would have been needing some cut out and reweld application.

All in all the job looks like it was done quite well. they simply just wouldnt have cared about the section in the middle knwoing it would have been seen. By the looks of it there only fault was not priming the welds properly/at all. It now explains why the whole car was resprayed in a only slightly darker red then factory. All i can say is thank god i decided i wanted to strip some weight out, will upload pics when i cbf.
