I have a 1986 celica gt with problems. Im new to the whole car scene so i figured id look around at some forums and try and fix it. Well i got completely confused and overwhelmed

The problem is when i go to start the car it tries to start but never actually does it. I went autozone to see if they could point me in the right direction. The guy there was adamant in saying that the celica was a truck XD. Can someone here help me out ? I have no idea where to start :banghead

welcome! you should start with pitures of your car! location?

-youll have to be more specific as to the symptoms. does it turn over or just click? do you have spark? ect..

-are you new to working on your own car or just the celi?

-again welcome, you wont find a better forum for your 4th gen.

pics of the car. oregon...nate ll be happy.

-how was the car running prior to the break down? there are a number of problems that could cause a no fuel. bad pump, bad fuel, or clogged filter are likley candidates.

    -maybe he was thinking sequoia?

it was running okay i think. it overheated once because there was no water in the radiator. Maybe a leak somewhere. The oil is fine though. the idle rpms bounce for a hour after its started. it has problems starting when its cold out.

EDIT: Oh my roomates dad also starter fluid into the intake i believe. an yes i gassed it.

nice car, and a 2SE motor.... check your fuel line just to make sure your getting fuel... im sure one of the other guys have a picture of where it is! remove it adn try to start the car, if fuel comes out then your fuel pump is ok and you have an injector prob!

we love to see new guys here! welcome! its great to see your tryng to keep your celica alive, once its going good, you wont be disapointed! i wonder if your far from nate.... ??

find your fuel line just before your injectors....disconnect it......grab a bottle or something and place the open end (from the pump) in the bottle and turn your key to on....your pump (if its working properly) should shoot fuel into the bottle...if not then you know its either your pump or a filter.

i looked around and we couldnt figure anything out. we think this is the fuel filter( the yellow thing)

we also think we found the fuel pump
    [IMG]

we had no idea where the fuel line is or the injectors=[

the bottom pic is the fuel filter, and the injectors are found on the upper part of the rear of the head right below the upper intake plenum. The fuel pump is in the gas tank, and only accessed by dropping the tank from the car...

-the yellow bit is a one way valve for the brake booster. the brakes use engine vacume to assist braking.

-and the "fuel pump" is actually the fuel filter. the pump is in the tank, so you would have to drop the tank to get at it.

-the injectors should be behind the valve cover kind of in the crotch of the intake manifold. 2 wires to each.

wow......i wish my filter was yellow....i want one....lol...im sorry man....its cool that you have no idea, lot of us have no idea what to do at first...it comes with learning......i dont have the same motor as you do but the fuel line should be in the same place.....im thinking i might have to get out in the garage and find out where mine is first....lol

yellow thing is just a connector for the brake booster vacuum. if you follow it, one end goes to the intake plenum, the other end goes to the brake booster.
as mentioned above, the "fuel pump" is actually the filter.

fuel pump is in the gas tank (the thing with 3 lines coming from it and a wire)

what i did when i was trying to revive my celica was to take out the air filter box (green thing in the pic below), spray butane (lighter fluid) into the AFM (silver thing the box was hooked up on) while someone else cranks the ignition. if it starts, you're 100% sure that it's fuel supply now.
note: don't step on the pedal while doing this; also, be warned that there may be backfire.

we put starter fluid into here:

    and nothing happened.
i don't have a way to drop the fuel tank because its sitting in our parking spot at apartments and the e brake is broken=[

-if you've doused it with starter fluid and nothing happens it sounds like a no spark issue.

-pull a plug out, reattach the wire, then hold the tip to the motor somewhere. it should spark when cranked. watch out you dont get zapped.
