Hello. I have a 1989 Toyota Celica ST. I have a problem where the power steering is leaking and we don't want to take it to a mechanic because it could cost. Any idea what it could be? I have to put new power steering fluid in every 2-4 days to keep the car have power steering. Let me know please.
Happened to me was a ps hose, I paid around 50€ for new ones made by a hydraulics shop. The ps pump was ok.
Tomorrow morning I shall take the celica to the mechanic and find out if the hose is the problem like you said. Until then, I hope the price isn't to costly
More than likely it's the high pressure power steering hose. Common failure on these vehicles. It's a 30-40 part at the store for a good one.
The Celica is at the auto shop right now waiting to be lifted and find out what the problem could be.. Still patiently, anxiously waiting
Quick little update about the Celica. I took it to the mechanic and it was about a 3 hour wait since other cars were ahead of me. I ended up going home with my little boy and resting until I receive a call that it wasn't a hose or pump that was leaking. But yes, it was the rack and pinon... I'm so disappointed that it had to he the rack and panion. He discussed that it was just cracked and from the Celica being a 25 year old classic car that its common that it would eventually not longer be of use. And now, the sad part. After telling me everything, the final price was $495 plus tax which I do have to pay if I want my acelica fixed
@CelicaSteve: yes, they just told me that it was replaced with a lifetime warranty rack and pinon for $500. I will pick up the celica in the morning after I pick up my son
That's great news, I understand $500 is a lot of money when you have your family to think about. Look forward to seeing some photos of it with the rims on, and I'd like to see photos of the interior please
Celica was running smoothly until one of the mechanics ripped my hose to the air cleaner and air was getting in the engine and dying out on me so I replaced it with a temporary hose for now. But Friday I will throw the new tires and rims on, order new air intake kit with hose, wash the Celica, and take pics of the interior as well!
You can buy a remanufactured power steering rack for around $150 in the US. So let's hope that the one they installed lasts a lifetime as they said.
So far it handles amazing. The power steering rack and pinon is made by duralast so of course judging by the name lmfao. But the labor killed me and that's why it coated so much... My dad and I were gonna fix it ourselves but we don't have the lift to actually make the job easier.
On mine all they did was change the rack and pinon. Everything was good on the car other than i would get bad handling when I had the old one.
Old, but worth a note. Regarding leaky rack ends, as the seals are not service-able from the outside. Lucas does a "power steering stop leak" product ive had good results with. Its a seal restorer and completely stopped the vicious full-tank-every-two-weeks leak i had. (The grass and the driveway both thanked me)
Lucas Stop Leak I'm planning on trying the Lucas this weekend...been getting a couple minor leaks from the aftermarket rack for a short while. Hope it works. Anyone else have decent results with it??? Vicdat
Nearly a year later, my rack still is holding good. If it still leaks after putting lucas in it, just keep topping it up with lucas. It takes a little but the thicker fluid + the seal rejuvenators in it will start working
