I apologise if my 1st post is of asking for help.
I was directed here from www.Celica-Club.co.uk which at the moment have little knowledge of my car.
I have been told anything they cannot answered, then this is the forum to find answers:)

Let me firstly introduce my car.
    Its a 1988 Gen4 JDM Convertible.
It has been well-looked after by the previous owner, but after recently acquired it myself - the power hood has started to failed.
In the UK, the Gen4 Convertibles are manual roof only.
Here's it is in its full glory:

Er, let me just check if the pics come out ok...

Check the pump in the boot. Chances are it's leaking like crazy and needs a rebuild of some o-rings. Shouldn't take more than a few hours to do.

Cheers everyone for your comments and warm welcomes!

I didn't finished my original posting since when I tried to see if the PICs come out ok - my thread didn't get posted for a whole day!
I just realised a reply on the EUROPE thread is not being posted until moderated?!!!

So I assume this reply of mine will not get to u until tomorrow?

So, I'll be quick as possible:
    1. The Power Hood work completely fine for a week
    2. Then it failed to close for the last 1cm - so I open the hydraulic pressure key to close the last 1cm by hand
    3. After another week, there was a squishing fluid noise from the passenger side behind driver (See PIC - the leak seem to be here)
    4. The power hood, now moves very very slowly - to the point now I open/close by hand (nearly broke my back!)
    5. I also notice the hydraulic fluid is almost non-existent (before it was full with translucent fluid)

Questions (sorry I am to the point and this is getting long winded):
    1. Hope someone can advise what I can check for (if I can get more pics in)
    2. What hydraulic fluid I need and where to buy from (any recommendation brands)
    3. How often does the fluid need topping up
    4. What is the service schedule and what need to be maintained for the power hood

Much appreciated and apologies for the long and direct questions here as a newbie

    The LEAK:

    The MOTOR and FLUID?

    The MOTOR?

    The almost empty FLUID:

    More pics of my car:

Nice....... that's an unusual place for the brake light, who put that there ?

Could you explain those buttons below the auto stick, interesting how they call your Cruise Control button Auto Drive, on the wheel as well.

    Hi mate,

I am not sure of the setup for cars in Australia, but yes I agree, the setup for my car is different compare with the UK models - since this car is a Japanese import.

I assume u meant the rear fog light, which might have been put there to comply with the UK law when it was imported.

As for the Auto Drive, maybe another Japanese thing (it is also called Cruise Control in the UK).

I assume u mean the buttons for the gears - I have POWER and MANUAL.

the only problem i see with rebuilding the hydrolics are that toyota never made a vert. they were all custom made per region. all the USA ones were made in california and are completely differnt then german and the rest of europe and japan. so perhaps someone that works on hydrolics and can access a huge mess of "o" rings.

yes that is the rear fog light added for the UK. you should see the god aweful 3rd brake like the US got.

No, those 3 or 4 buttons under/near/in front of the e-brake/hand-brake and not your electric mirrors either, I'm sure they're labelled but I can't read them from that angle

BTW, how big are those rims/tyres ?

I forgot to mention that I have no idea how to help you with your problem, I'm just loving your car.

However, I will say that with my limited experience with other hydraulics I do know that if you have worn/split o'rings the fluid will surely leak when the pressure is on but not allow the pump to build enough pressure to close the roof properly. I can't help thinking that it would be a relatively easy job to fix, but I have been wrong before.
Don't be scared of it and have ago at pulling it apart

This ride is all I have been dreaming about the last years...except for the RHD ;).

SilverShadow, new user here, bought a bunch of stuff from the German Convertible builder. Maybe he has some parts for you????

Were the japanese verts done by ASC as well? I noticed that the pump has an ASC part number, but if ASC is in California where the American cars were modified why does this have an ASC pump?

Also is there any chance you could take a couple more pictures of your rail assembly back by where the hydraulic cylinders are? I just recently took mine apart and put it back together. but i dont believe it is right. Your pictures that you have now are almost the right area i need!

My hydraulics in my car are completely out. no power to them whatsoever. I have gone crazy trying to find the reason why but have come to terms with moving the top manually....Sorry i cant be of more help.

Oh and SWEET RIDE!!!! I too have a Red Vert, however it is in rough shape right now. Just replaced the top and rail assembly but my new top is Camel.....It looks ALRIGHT with the red but i think i will be going black soon.

i think you have an O-ring issue as mentioned above.

Also, the reason the posts are moderated is because its a way to stop spammers before they get into the site, But you should be good to go now without moderation
