Looked at several dozen photos over the last couple weeks and noticed a variety of solutions from full custom CAI's to others where they've done nothing. I'm entertaining the idea of just the straight-up maf adapter, and Filter. So of course, I have questions.

First of all, how much will it mess w/ my engine?
It will make it run a bit leaner, should I worry about it?

Is it going to help cool down engine temp. too?

    What's this about sensor relocation?
Is that only w/ full CAI's or short ram applications where that is necessary?

If I just run an adapter/filter, do I really need the bypass valve? (was looking at the AEM version) I don't drive the car in the winter, but it will be driven in the rain, so I would assume it would be best no?

Saw some people who left the bottom of the stock box there, is there a reason for that?

    Thanks,

    -Kevin

if i were you i would go with a short ram and the AFM adapter. my pics are not good ones to look at as i have standalone and no AFM. you won't be hurting anything by upgrading. perks of fuel injection.

    RE: Short Ram

Thanks! Hmm... not much room to work with, wanted to keep it simple and avoid relocating the battery, but I understand the short ram thing now. Do I not need to worry about MAF Sensor relocation?

I could do the cold air box mod too since I know a few expert metal fab guys at the sign shop.

Definately do the cold air box if youve got people to fab it up. Its always better to keep the hot air from being sucked in.

    Re: Cold Air box etc

HA! Won't be nicely polished alum like the Weapon R boxes, but it will probably only cost me a 12pk of Hienys... hehehe.

Looks like I'm going to pull the trigger on this project starting this weekend. Actually found a polished alum. adapter plate in town here for $12 so I'm going to go grab that before it dissappears. Next would be the filter, then the box.

OK, noob filter questions... what's the pro's/con's to the filters w/ oil and w/out oil? Do you think I could just grab a cheepo cone filter for now? I'd rather not spend $50+ on a K'nN at this point. IS there a filter out there where I can rig this up... adapter > filter > pipe/tubing (to inlet hole) or don't bother?

    -Kevin

Edit: My bad, I saw some filter/duct kits at the store. Looked pretty cheesy tho.

i got an intake of ebay once for 30$. Never had a problem with the chepo filter, which was pretty nice looking. Tube was alluminume but not polished.

Is that one of those new elements they're always finding, or some version of unobtainium?? :p

Hopefully, I'll have the short ram this weekend. The metal guy hasn't called me back yet, but I have dimensions for him. I'm thinking totally enclosed with some rubber on the edges and let the hood seal it. It will bolt on to the MAF in 2 places and one other place opposite to the MAF. I think Weapon R makes something similar, but it's a totally enclosed box. I don't think I want a total enclosure, I want to be able to pop the hood and do check it with out unscrewing anything. Next after the box will be the ductwork. I think the Bypass Valve addition will be contingent upon how exactly the ductwork is done.

    Update

Got the adapter and filter on today took maybe an hr. :p Took her for a little spin. Some noticeable improvements, a smidge more power/acceleration, runs a little cooler, and it sounds a little better. I think for what $ I've put into it so far, it was worth it.

Glad I did I did this today since I noticed the stock intake hose was ripped a little bit right near the intake. Hope is wasn't like that for too long. Pretty easy temp fix, just bought an extra coupler and fitted on to the rubber intake hose. Seems to holding up fine so far. The dealership told me it was 100 for a new hose! No way, that's robbery! I'll probably end up custom fabbing one, no big deal.

Well, the box and duct work is next. I'm a little concerned about puddles until I get the box made, but I think it would be pretty difficult to get water up in there. I'll just be careful until then.

    Cool.

I was working on the prototype box today until it started raining that is. I used some kind of thin-thin aluminum sheets and aluminum duct tape that was in the shed. Looks like crap, but it was waay easy to bend and shape it to the area I have to work with. Now all I have to do is get a hold of that metal guy, give him the prototype and he'll bend-up, rivit, and seal that bad-boy for me  hehehe, exxxceeelllent!

Seems the car runs better w/out the prototype box, I guess the box wants the ducts connected to it? I don't know.

I'm happy so far, just a little bummed to find out she doesn't have much potential.
