I have an issue with a st162 where the oil gauge goes from low to high and back down again as soon as I start it. Just wondering if anyone has encounted this issue before, and what should be checked.

You'll have to be more specific

Does it do that while warming up or only when you turn the key?

What's the pressure when it's running?

At initial start up Oil gauge goes to full than when motor runs drops back very slowly to zero.
Round sender unit that screws in at end of head (battery side) has been replaced with a new one as well as the wiring to it.
When sender unit is screwed out heaps of oil comes out indicating heaps of pressure.
When car is running Zero on gauge.

Car has the required new oil in it also & nothing is showing on dip stick.
    Motor is running fine.
Head gasket just has been replaced.

It sound's like oil pessure switch is damaged maybe used wrong one or wiring is wrong if you say there no oil showing on dip stick then there is no oil in it check that first very important or just to low maybe swicth will work when oil level is correct

h.g. on the right way????? i would suppose if it were reversed it could cause strange issues with the oil system as some of the ports may be blocked.....

    -just throwing out ideas.

-the sensor is a very simple thing i would imagine if it reads anything that would indicate its working. how many quarts? should be 4.1q. maybe theres just enough to suck some up cold and then run below the p/u. go by the stick.

What do you mean by that?

If HG was wrong no oil would get to the sender

Dipstick should be over full on these motors - no exceptions

I think you can measure the sender resistance to check it, don't have my bgb
handy but there's tests for the gauge also.

Don't drive it till you're sure the pressure is OK
Normally what you describe indicates that the relief valve has jammed open
and the motor only has minutes to live.
The oil is still flowing but all pressure is being vented into the sump.
