Today I cracked open my hood after 4 days of work, and noticed my female clip that connects the ecu to o2 came off the wire!

I had been noticing shitty gas mileage and was like "wtf"
poped it back on with a new female clip and she idles so smooth again! I was starting to think I advanced timing way too far causing pinging because I had to play with it to pass emissions.

Thought I would share since its always good to check the basics under the hood.

sweet, how do u advance the timing on the GE? is it on the cap or ECU? did u have to retard it to pass?

Its on the cap. I advanced it when I got the new motor in.

Turn right to advance timing, left to retard.

Yes, because I had it beyond the stock 10 degrees, it made more pollution so I retarded it all the way to its lowest set, and passed with flying colors. Before I failed two times badly but passed because I had it lower than ten degrees. Ran like shit, but put out super low numbers.

I noticed my MPG is crap this morning I filled the tank up 2 weeks ago- I drive 1.5 miles a day- its @ .25 of a tank left - I need to check the O2 Sensor.

does advancing timing affect gas consumption? Id assume it'd make thing worse

For me it gave me better accel- and idle- but with a negative of running rich- and with a higher idle.....

Ya it does make you run rich, because I was failing emissions from it. I just opened the MAF sensor and did some leaning out. I dont recommend playing with that tho. If you do, make sure to use a paint pen to mark the rings original positions so you know the default setting.

so overall advancing timing = more performance and worse mpg?

what if you advance the timing and lean out the air to fuel with in the MAF?

advance it too far and you can get knock IIRC.

yep, thats a very real possibility. running higher grade gas lets you advance further. A friend of mine ran 87 in a civic he advanced to the max and didnt have problems tho

he has a civic, that's enough of a problem in itself haha

mileage wise, I get 260-285 all city. I drive delivery during rush hour...

a quick comment on playing with your AFM and timing from your resident mechanic...
DO NOT do it unless you:
    1. know what you are doing (seriously know not think you know)
    2. are willing to replace what you break and have deep pockets (because nothing toyota is cheap)

    that is all!

ya I used a smog machine at my dads work to test my adjustments to keep from going too lean, and get rid of the rich stock setup.
