Need some insight

    I did a compression test on my 87' gt (3sfe) the other day.
    Dry Wet
    #1 165 220
    #2 165 210
    #3 165 220
    #4 165 230

    The book say's 178lbs. is normal factory and 145 is low. I have 157000 miles on it. Question is does anyone think that the engine is good. It gets 31 mpg on the freeway and doe's not smoke. I need to put a front crankshaft seal in and I plan to do a complete gasket redo at the end of the month. Is it worth it.
    Hase any one had simualar reading? Thanks.

    do a cylinder leakage test to it, that will let you know if your valves and piston rings are still good. after that since your doing a gasket job anyways, drop the pan check your conrods for front, back, up and down movement. there should be none. side to side should move. check the cams for scoring, belts for wearing ect . . . general routine work. and no she should be plenty fine @150XXX my old gt went to 392000k and i ran nos through that pile..lol

    As long as your numbers are steady across the board you have nothing to worry about. Even better than the book is a bonus

    Thanks for the info people. I'm going to do a full engine re-seal next month, along with new timing belt and water pump, and maybe a clutch job.

    put the cylinder on the compression stroke. and screw the adapter in the spark plug hole, then put air pressure to it, read the gauges on the special tool, to see just how much it can hold. if the cylinder is any less than 95% sealed (how much psi it can hold, dictated by the special tool.) sealed you have a leak. so look around your engine for common spots (ie: valves, bottom of the piston, tailpipe intake ect...) and listen for leaks.

    From what I understand you put an eyedropper full of oil in all the cylinders via the spark plug hole and let the engine sit overnight. In the morning check to see if it has leaked down...also called a leakdown test

    or you can buy the 20 dollar gauge and do it.
