now that i pull up the e-brake, the car doesn't brake at all almost! How do i adjust the strength of these? I thought they were supposed to be self-adjusting.

lol, hell no they aren't self adjusting. there is a peice in there that rotates and has teeth. it's between the shoes. turn that outward and make sure the drum still spins with very little resistance.

they are self adjusting....sorry mafix. You guys are just doing it wrong

Drive the car in reverse....50 meters or so (get a good speed up) then yank on that e-brake as hard as you can...skidding the tires. Do this 3 or 4 or 5 times and it should adjust it properly. Of course, when you put the drum back on the pads should have been close to the drum...if not then this method might not work

most drum systems are claimed self aadjusting but never are. and i don't want bald spots on my tires.

second that...its really easy to adjust it too..Takes a matter of 10-15mins and you`ll have a nice tight e-brake.

No offense but this is not how you adjust it ...

After you replace the shoes...Adjust the wheel so that the shoes are kinda tight against the inside of the rotor..The back it off 3-4 clicks...
To bed the shoes, drive at 30mph and pull up on the e-brake semi hard but dont lock em up...DOne!
Then adjust the handle using the locknuts if its out of adjustment...
It should take 8-10 Clicks upwards to hold the car on a hill
