Got a few problems, need help...

Ok guys, got a few things I cant work out.

1.) The celica has HUGE flat spots. It accelerates ok, but not great, all over the rev range. But between 3-3500 and 6-6500rpm it accelerates much better, how it should. It doesnt seem any different with the air con on or off. Its a stock 3SGE. New dizzy cap, rotor and leads, good airfilter in stock box. Wondering wtf going on. Air? Fuel? Spark? Should I change for a new coil as well?

2)The celica runs rich maybe, you can smell it when it revs. No smoke or anything as far as I know. Is a dodgy AFM known to cause this and lack of power?

    3) The exhaust note also sounds retarded. A stock muffler is in place, i didnt use a gasket between the exhasut and muffler in the mounting flange. Could this be leaking, causing the funny note and the rich smell?

    4) Did anyone else get a check engine light ocassionally after the car is driven after a cold start for 5 mins, giving a code 12 i think it was, starter signal....

    Thanks guys!

A dodgy AFM could definetly cause problems. If the ECU doesn't know how much air the engine is getting it cannot know how much fuel to deliver. So that could be your problem for both 1 & 2 above

Check down in the technical section there will be tests for the AFM probably in the EFI section.

Thing is I dont get any error codes for it...Might try testing it, and swap for another at the wreckers...

    Thanks :D

sound slike tvis might be stuck. If its not working correctly your torque will be low up to 4000RPM

How can I check if it is working, and what the problem is?

Also, there is no way to override the mixture is there?

The thing is, it just wont rev. It seems to make power fine, if I take off with to many revs it will wheelspin and carry on, lyk anything over2500rpm, but then just bog down and take forever to build the revs up. It doesnt miss or anything, just hesitates. Driving me nuts!

Heres a test. I can do a consistent hand timed 11 second 0-100kmph in it. I know it should be quicker than that, right!

Hesitation could be any of a number of things

    - bad AFM
    - incorrect timing
    - vacuum leak
    - low fuel pressure
    - poor spark
    - clogged air filter

You have addressed some of these issues so I would start by making sure the timing is correct. Then I would check all my hoses to make sure they are connected and not cracked and leaking anywhere.

Once your sure the timing is correct and you don't have any vacuum leaks we can check things like AFM & coil & T-VIS ( T-VIS uses vacuum hoses so that may be a possible problem) T-VIS controls are located on the back of the intake manifold down at the bottom. Pretty much right above the rear engine mount where you practically have to pull the engine to get at them.

Its especially noticeable in 1st taking off, as soon as the clutch is out the car bogs right down and barely moves.

Does a coil usually have to be changed after 200,000kms and 20 years?

Car still seems to run rich. SO that could suggest coil not making enough spark to burn fuel right, and also that the AFM/TPS/OXY sensor is causing too much fuel right...

Also the PCV hose from the Valve Cover to the TB is now gone, as it broke. Car doesnt run any different. Would this be affecting it?

Timing was spot on before the dizzy cap etc was changed....

Going to the wreckers thursaday, plan to get a AFm or 2, a few TPS and oxy sensors and the PCV hose.

Also I put new shocks in, but do the rear wheels have alignment settings also? I had the fronts done. Also the car still body rolls a bit, i can chuck it in a corner and it will lean right over, the lancer never did. Im guessing the springs are gone....Hopefully will try again for the lowered ones at the wreckers.

    Will check Vacuum hoses anyway.

It may be showing some signs of age but I have run them up to 400,000km.

YES this is what I would call a MAJOR vacuum leak. You are sucking unmetered (AFM) air/dirt into the intake through the throttle body. Both ends should at least be plugged until a replacement hose is found.

All hoses should be checked occasionally, vacuum leaks are allways the most likely performance issue.

Girlfriend has confirmed for me that when i floor it in the celica, and she is driving behind, she can see both smoke, and smell the fuel. So running very rich. Will get onto the PCV hose tomorrow. Would I be right in thinking that the AFM is the most likely thing for the richness? If its that rich, that would also be the root of my performance issue?

Have you done a compression test on the engine. If you are putting out smoke when you floor it oil must be burning.

Once you have you vacuum issues settled if the performance has not returned and its still running rich I would probably look at the O2 sensor first.

It only does it if i floor it at high revs, and surely black smoke pouring out is fuel when iut smells like it right?

Will try and get hold of a compression gauge and test it. Hasnt used any oil though.

Will try the oxy sensor first then. Got the next few days off work, so its down to the wreckers for me!

Just to add another thing, with the car cold this morning, it was hard to start. Turned over fast, sounded rough then slowly built up to idle. Like a tractor. Has never done this though......

After I went to the wreckers yesterday........

I put a new PCV hose on. The old one must have been no good anyway....

I replaced the adjuster for the A/C VSV. Still no good, but i think it sealed now.....

And I put in a much cleaner oxy sensor I pinched........

So I drove the car home, floored it and it accelerated quite well up to 80 in 2nd. Grabbed 3rd, shot to 100. Slowed down to 80 again, and I felt pretty good haha........

    :D

I may have fixed it, il test 2nite and get a timed 0-100. Still a bit rich maybe though... :(

Would the old cracked PCV hose hasve caused a noticable performance loss?

:( Was wrong. Just didnt feel as jerky i guess. Car still recorded a 0-100 of 11 seconds. However it did so both with the AC on max, and with no AC....have I found my problem here? It still makes a constant belt noise when i engage the AC, and affects the idle (which it now holds with the AC On :D ). But no click or anything. Is it stuck on perhaps?

So oxygen sensor or AFM more likely? got my gf to rev the car a bit while i stood behind and smelt. I was greeted with a spray of fuel out of the muffler tips! i reckon running that rich has to be why its losing power!

Any vacuum leak can cause a noticable loss of performance. Take that black hose off that goes from your AFM to your intake and check it carefully for leaks/cracks check all your hoses they can become very brittle so some hoses that may still look good may not be sealing very well at the ends if they have hardened. Some of my old hoses I can shatter with a hammer their so brittle.

    I'd check O2 sensor first.

This hose was so hard theres no way it was making a good seal with the pipe it connected to.

Got a multimeter today, so il check the O2 sensor. Hoping there is resistance values in the manual. Il also check that hose you are talking about, never noticed one like that before

I notice there is a screw on the AFM though, under a metal cover. Does this adjust the mixture? 5I was thinking I could mark the position it is in, and then try and lean out the mixture a little by little....
