I want to replace my stock steering wheel in my 1986 ST162, but the buttons for the cruise control are on it, so how would i go about changing it?

If you wanted to replace the steering wheel you would loose the cruise control option. I don't think there is a re-location kit for that. Major wiring job if you wanted to snag something where its not wired to the steering wheel.

I've thought about how to do it, and I think I have worked out a solution using 3 resistors and a little re-wiring with 2 switches on my aftermarket OMP wheel. I will post up more once I get my white lightning back on the road and I can test my idea to see if it actually works.

Hopefully it works, because i am not keeping the stock wheel, and i prefer to have the cruise control option available, as i sometimes use it.

It can't be that hard to extend the wires if you use the same switches.....

yeah just pull the wires back through the steering wheel neck, and put the swittches elsewhere, maybe on the dash under the guages? extend the wires if need be. not hard.

Maybe if i sit the switches somewhere else, or make a bracket for them and use a bit of super glue. There has got to be some way. :chin:

I'm doing something similar for my 5th gen trac, Its basic switches, you can actually buy buttons at radio shack if you want to make it look cleaner

    There are 2 options

    - you can pull them through the wheel hub area and just mount them on your wheel

    - you can mount them near your cruise control button. I'll write up and take pictures when I wire my stuff (My cruise control has been taken out but I'm putting it back in)
