Suprise suprise... I'm back with yet ANOTHER problem... stupid 21 year old cars. Anyway:

I can't downshift into 3rd gear. I can upshift into it no problem, but the gear WILL NOT engage when goign from 4th to 3rd. I can throw it into 2nd and then 3rd, but not directly from 4th. I don't even have to let off the clutch...

No, it doesn't just grind. It feels like something is blocking the shifter. Weird... I can still drive it this way, but I would like to find out why the hell I wouldn't be able to downshift... any ideas?

    Yeah, same problem..hhaa..fun eh??

EXACT same problem, actually.....to get into 3rd on the downshift, I also had to put it into 2nd, then back into 3rd (without dis-engaging the clutch in 2nd) to get it into 3rd.....

I never did fix this...so let me know what the problem is :D

Try bleeding the clutch line. First check to see the level of your clutch fluid it may be low.

I always thought our cars had the tranny that will only let you downshift when the RPMs are slower....

Please correct me if im wrong, Cause I dont think its a problem I think its a saftey feature for the Tranny???

I'm guessing you guys are having synchro problems. Its a common fault with the early S series gearboxes when they get some mileage on them/get thrashed. My '86 had the same can't downshift into 3rd problem, popped out of 5th under load as well as a few other nasty problems. A swap to a late model S54 cured all that, and now I can downshift/upshift whenever I want, where I want :p

does the s54 come in the 5th gen celica?

it hangs off the 5sfe engine so it comes in the camry (4cyl model) and the celica and im sure it would come in other models too!

So would this be something worth replacing? I'm not very mechanical, so I would probably need someone to replace it for me... no idea how much it would cost though :(

And what kind of mileage? I only have 150 on it...

Or $50, depending on who your mates' are. Hey, Alex? :p

The S54 also comes on the 3SGE's from MR2's.

what fluid are u running? try throwing some atf in it and that may fix it up a bit, made it so i could switch into 1st without grinding and such so its worth teh $6 :)

    quality or gearing wise?

shift speed, the feel of the box, and the gearing allows me to sit on just under 3k rpm when im doing 100km/h

it seems to just be a general all round stronger box. it loves being downshifted for over taking (into 3rd) and can handle fast changes...

all that, plus its a newer box anyways so its gonna be in better condition :)

is it a direct swap? if its from a mr2 it would require something to convert it right?
