Bondo or fiberglass

Hey folks, any experienced body work people out there cause its bodywork time.

Before I get this car painted possibly this summer I want to fuse the rear spoiler together to the body and make the rear look like its all in one, smooth & uniform . It can be said that this is removing the visible seams. Doing something similar to the rear of a Dodge Viper just to give you guys a not too far off perspective.

So I'm interested in not only fusing the rear to the body but, like the Viper, the spoiler is going to wrap around the tail lights of the Celica, which I believe has the perfect body style and rear for it.

So how would this be done? The spoiler I installed myself I believe is a lousy job, but it works. Do I have to drill something in more? Or can I bondo or fiber glass it no problem?

Oh, I'm also looking at widening the rear fenders, but I'll post about that later so it's not too much take in.

    Tips?Suggestions?Comments?

    Thanks!

for filling the gaps and eliminating the seam between the spoiler and body just use bondo.

For the major shaping areas and widebody go and get yourself some rigid foam, glue a big square of it to the side of the car (make sure you use an epoxy that won't eat foam) and start shaping. Then once you are happy with the shape go ahead with the bondo again.

Hm, I'll have a go at this. I probably am gonna have to cut the existing fenders soon. Wider body needs wider drivetrain.

Thanks! I'm glad someone likes it. Will keep you guys posted about this and will put up a little build thread as time/funds permit. Can't wait to get started already!

So I recently found these pictures from Hideki @ alltrac.net. The wide body design here closely resembles what I'm going to do. So I'm giving a simple. but low aggressive stance to an already successful design to the Celica. Aim is to look like the car is still from factory, but to any other 4th gen celica lovers, it will be very obvious.
So I'll follow schmooot's idea with the rigid foam and see what I can do.

Hideki's pictures Below, to give you guys a better perspective.

Planning to to have wider wheels maybe 255 275? As well as 17 or 18 inch wheels possibly. Ofcourse not trying to be ridiculous with the tire size, but all this widebody and larger tire combination will give the impression that the car is really hugging the road and aggressive in its stance. Without a doubt I bet this will improve the grip of the car and it's handling, so it's not just for looks, its all go.

Time to get to the planning and work.

    Bondo or fiberglass ?

    BONDO............

Fiberglass is not as flexible as bondo and will eventually crack and delaminate
from the metal. You could make the piece out of fiberglass like the visor I made
but its bolted to the roof not molded in.

How did you attach the spoiler to the hatch/fenders. The GTS has holes in the hatch
and special plastic brackets with 2 sided tape for the 2 side pieces.

If I wanted to mold a plastic/fiberglass piece to metal you should find an adhesive specifically
designed to bond plastic/fiberglass to metal and then use bondo to smooth things out.

    More wide body ideas....

My favorite IMSA...I'd do something different for the rear spoiler but other than that
I'm liking it alot its a coupe but theirs a hatchback version too

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my thread I appreciate it alot.

I will look into the adhesives and specifics for the bondo molding to metal. If you know of any brands please let me know.

As for those Celicas you showed me. I actually keep a folder for design schemes. And in that folder is a sub for folder for interior, Exterior body design, and engine.

Interior has sub folders with pictures in Ferrari, Honda NSX, Lamborghini etc and their respective interior designs.

The Exterior design sub folder has the sub folders with pictures for IMSA GTO Celica, Corvette, Camaro, NSX, Ferrari, and the awesome Pagani and its artistic design which I love, and other Celicas etc.

The engine sub folder is another story.

Anyway, you can see I will attempt to integrate the muscular appearance of the american muscle car, and the exotic appearance of a lamborghini or super low and wide Ford GT, a rare but timeless look of a 97 NSX. All while retaining the Celica appearance. Something I do not want to do is disturb the flow of the Celica's design. In other cars you can see people putting on bodykits that disturb their cars flow. ie, you don't put a long nose on your car that has a very short rear. It just isn't proportional. Will try to keep to the Celica's lines. The fenders will be widened and look more muscular but keep it's original flow if you know what I mean.

But Hideki's idea looks really good too. It's actually what I might be doing haha.

Anyway, my 162 originally didn't come with a spoiler, so I had to make holes myself. As for the adhesive plastic plate that held down the side pieces, I found some but used a different adhesive sticker thing and kinda made my own thing with it. Plus each side has a screw kind of thing at the almost very end. I made a hole and just stuck it in there and it holds just fine. All this is temporary, by no chance am I keeping it permanent. Although I did a lousy job of putting the spoiler on. The center of the spoiler where they meet with the taillights aren't in the ideal flush they're supposed to be in. I'm gonna have to redo the holes. Hopefully there is no welding involved.

And yeah the IMSA GTO Celica is a gem. That's how big I want my tires to be. Maybe just a bit smaller.
And Bobis' Celica, looks good too. Ever find out if the guy who sold it or who has it now is in a forum or has a build thread?

I must strongly advise you against cutting any metal unless you are willing to learn
how to weld or become best buddies with someone who can weld.

I will say this again ..... YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO WELD IF YOU WANT TO CUT UP
    YOUR REAR FENDERS.

Heres a shot of a cut up rear fender it has some serious bracing in it for the strut
tower so you have to be able to weld up some sort of replacement brace for the piece
    you cut out.

your going to have to cut the inner fender somewhere close to the yellow line and that means
loosing a lot of the brace at the top of the well so your going to have to compensate for that
somehow or even a properly bonder fiberglass panle won't stay stuck too long if you have
lost the structural integrity of the rear frame.

Right, I know a couple of people that can weld. May have to talk with them. With what I'm going to do with this car everything is gonna have to be fabricated and custom which i understand. Thanks for the info, you're heaps of help!
    Were those your pictures?

By the way, the visor looks great. Good idea. I'd want to add a rack at the top along with the visor. They do sell some racks for our cars don't they?

Interesting. Thanks man. Looks like something I would do lol. Looks like they didn't really use measurements much, but used the the and the tires itself to make their mold. Much more simple way to go about it. Great idea though. Thanks for the idea Kev  I can use this
