Air intake to cone filter, what size tube?

I'm going to make a custom conversion plate between my MAF and an eventual cone filter. What I need to know is, what size tube should I end up at? 3"?

(Before you ask, the idea is a cool looking gradual tube from rectangle to circle, rather than just a tube welded to a plate)

i dont really follow the "cool" idea but i went 2.5 mandrel [45 degree] tubing form the Tb to the maf and then 3" from the maf to the conical filter in side my driver side fender wall

You don't have to make the adapter, it's like $12 at Autozone. The common MAF Adapter and Cone Filters are 3".

it's FMAF - Front Mount Air Filter

I think I know what he wants to do, and the size will depend on the filter you use. the most common is 3"

I can't think of a way to describe it, and my drawing skills suck, but basically, on our MAF, there is a rectangular hole, but the tubing/filters are circles. So the idea is that I will build a gradual adapter, rather than a sudden one. Think of it like taking a tube and bending one end into a rectangle while leaving the other end round.

they have large versions of these for ventilation ducts

A stepped intake would create more velocity..Which is good., So maybe worth a crack at it

Well.. I wasn't really worried about the step. Those of you with MAF adapters, what size cone filters do those usually take? My concern was more that the transition from round to rectangle be smooth.
