So today I am driving down the freeway and the car starts to cut out however if I shift it will act normal for a bit longer then start again.

I dont think its my fuel pump as it doesnt die just cuts out. (almost like the car was getting too much fuel not enough air)

I still havent had time to take my throttle body apart and clean that peice with carb cleaner. (the idle air control valve) would that be the cause of this.

I am going to have to pull that out and clean that anyway just to see before I can drive home tonight as the car isnt going anywhere if I don't (it will move but I dont want to harm the engine)

once again any help is greatly appreciated.

Will it not idle on its own ? When exactly does it happen ? Only on Decel ? Does it happen under load only?
When is the last time you changed the Fuel filter?
Injectors been cleaned? Replaced? How many miles???

odly enough i have experienced this numerous times on my celi, i finally found the culprit....
have you messed with your afm?

my culprit was the little wires inside the afm(under the black cover) were not making very good contact with the black lines and every now and again it would lose contact and the car would cut out.

Turns out i needed a new afm, cause you cant really bend those little hair like wires back to the board.

yeah the AFM is the biggest PITA ever. i know i have GE and AT ones but i may have a FE one at my parents. let me know if you need it!

It will idle fine. only sputter a bit when i apply gas but then goes fine.

When exactly does it happen ?
It happens when driving under normal load I can sometimes fix it if I excellerate or downshift to a lower gear and excellerate. Other times I will have to left off the pedal and then go back on.

When is the last time you changed the Fuel filter?

    Injectors been cleaned? Replaced?
They may not sure how to do that or when they were done last

    How many miles???
    160,000 miles

if you can grab another afm, i have succesfully used ones from camrys as well, as long as its got a 3sfe motor, yes there may be a slight richer or leaner burn(though i doubt it). but it will tell you if that is it, check c/l for someone parting out a 3sfe(or whatever motor yours is)

If i can get the car to take me home and bring me back to work so i can get my check then I can get another AFM from the scrap yard tomorrow.

just to be clear that is the peice thats on my air intake (the box that contains the air filter)

No not the piece that has the air filter, Its bolted to that box...

yep the top half of the box with the big metal peice

yah that big metal piece has a small black cover on it, under the cover is the variable resistor unit that measures the flow of air via the flap inside the metal box. that variable resistor is what acted up on mine and is likely acting up on yours.

actually on the 4th gens the afm does:
    Fuel pump activation
    Air intake temp
    fuel regulation
most annoying air restriction on the face of the planet

damn, didnt think it did that much. though the main problem is the hairs(wires) that do the resistance to measure where the plate is.

what happens if i have my pump on a switch ?

the afm would not see the switched response from the fuel pump(dont know if it would do anything though) but the expected response would not be there.

    actually
the afm acts as a fail safe for the fuel pump. if the car isn't running then the fuel pump wont. that's all that does, it's a safety for accidents.

speaking of fuel pump do ours make the normal whirl sound when you turn the key to the on position (as far i know its OEM factory fuel pump as I havent changed it). I was told it is suppose to and my freinds does but mine does not. now this could be due to the AFM being bad.
