    Hey everyone!

Does anyone know how hard it would be to swap in an A series engine (i.e. 7afe, 4age, etc...) into our 3S powered ST162's?
I know I'm going to need different motor mounts, but is there anything else I will probably need?
Long story short, I found a 6th gen Celica with a turbo'd 7AFE for a 1000 bucks, and I'm thinking of buying it, swapping the motor and tranny into my car, and then parting out whatever's left. :p

    Thanks. :D

I have a friend that swaped a 3sge into an ae92 corolla (4age) in two days, kinda easy he said,is basiclly the same that you want to do!You want to do that at home?I remember that he said the only things he changed was the engine mounts but it was years ago I cant remember well xD

The 4th gen was offered with a 4A-GE in Japan and Europe until 1987, so any A-series motor will certainly fit with the right mounts, exhaust etc. I dare say the wiring would be the hardest part of the swap.

A turbo 7A-FE? Not a factory job I assume? How much do you know about the motor, was it built to handle the extra power, or just had the turbo strapped on? Last thing you'd want to do is drop a grand( plus whatever else the conversion will cost) on a grenade....

i know there's a place that sells 3s-gte conversion kits for AW11 mr-2 owners. the mounts they sell go on A series engine bays and bolts on to S engines. they already have poly in them too! now i don't know if they have it the other way around....

my 2cents. arent a series 1.8l. i guess the only reason id go that route would be 4ag since theres tons of aftermarket stuff.

-i would be worried about the 6th gen. sound to cheap for the motor to be any good.

doesnt sound......too good....run the compression check and check that motor completely out first.

Kinda tempted to get a 20v 4age as well now... haha
$1200 gets me a motor, ECU, tranny, and a few other goodies... :p

Yep, if you've absolutely gotta have an A-series, you may as well go the whole hog and use a 20-valver, they make good power stock and at least you'll know it won't blow up the first time you give it a squirt

There was an OEM supercharged version of the 4A-GE as well, called 4A-GZE. Power is 145hp iirc, but it's very rare. But the 20V is also very rare :)

I think if I go 4AG, I'll go 20v. The GZE's cost a pretty penny, and don't make as much power as the 20V...

So lets see, I'll need to get motor mounts, and do the wiring... How much harder and more pricey do you all think this'll be vs. a 3SGTE swap? (Do take note that I'm swapping the tranny out either way)
I know for sure that for both engine and tranny, the 3SGTE costs a lot more than the 4AG. (Since I'm pretty sure I can't just slap on the AWD tranny into my 162...)

Have a poke around some MR2 forums, they've been doing the swap the other way around for years, should be pretty easy to reverse-engineer the solutions.

Re. how much more pricey, I would say come up with a figure that you reckon the conversion will cost, then budget to spend twice that much and you'll be sweet :lol2

buy a 185 GTE (motor +ecu+wires only, no trans) for $1200, grab your trans, drill a hole for the FE starter, get a FE flywheel, get a 1mz-fe starter (same location as FE starter, but stronger), boom. done.

4agze dont have a lot of horsepower but have forged interns and you can reach like 200hp at least with stock engine...at least thats the info that I have! But they're expensive and I think for a celica i'll prefer the 3sgte!
We are talking about very different engines...you want power go turbo for sure...if you want a N/A screamer,a light engine revving to 9.000rpm 4AG 20v...its your choice man!

    my question....
why? why loose displacement? why drop hp and torque? for 1200 or less you can swap a gte in. the only thing you'd save is weight. and not enough to drop that much power.
    key things to remember:
you can make a fun car 2 ways. either displacement or rpm. that's it.

    DON"T do this !

Friend of mine had this setup, 7A-FE with turbo on it. Did 170Hp but with stock internals very dangerous to push in high revs... Furthermore the 7a-fe is an oil eating engine most oof the times.

Get a 3sgte swap in your car when theere is a 3s-ge in it allready. Find a beatup st165 and swap that thing without welding enginemounts and shit :)

PS the friend told me he ALWAYS was afraid to blow his engine up... ;)

Thanks for the input everyone! I guess I'll keep searching for ideas...

Kinda tempted to do an electric conversion since my other car makes way more power than my Celica... That, smog exemption, and the fact that pretty much everything mechanical in my car seems to want to die... :(

Even if you built a 7A-GE 20v and fitted it, it would be less than a 3s and a 3S-GTE swap would work out cheaper

7A-FE + Turbo = fail, how many 3/4/5S-FE turbo's do you still see running?

That my friend is the joy of owning a classic, don't let it beat you
Imagine a new car, imagine the monthly payments - then take half that amount and spend it on your car for a couple of months and you're set for another year or two
