Personal preference, so it's up to you, but if it's minus-20, you'll be OK with 5w30. I'd like to hear what our east coast members have to say about oil weight, as their winters are way more severe than ours.
^Ok, but I prefer 10w30 most of the year. Ever notice how hot our engines run? I just feel better with 10w30. It's not like your engine will blow up or anything, it's just a preference. I'm sure there are guys who swear their motor longevity is due to the better start-up viscosity of the 5w30. You might wanna do a google search on oil viscosity, there's a lot of discussion oil weights, brands, synthetic vs regular, etc.
For boxing day at Wal-Mart they have 4L jugs of Castrol GTX 10w-30 or 5w-30 for $8.88, so I am going to pick some of that up and do an oil change and see how it runs from there.
good price indeed. i run 10-40. i know it sounds silly and probably is not true to any degree, but i have heard and psychologically experienced that heavier oil on older leaking gaskets slows the leak down. so i run 10-40 in my car with a minor oil leak somewhere and 20-50 in my girlfriends camry with an oil pan gasket leak. yes i plan to have both leaks fixed one day, when money is freed up some. but for now, i use heavier oil.
no, i mean psychologically. i'm almost positive running the heavier stuff doesn't help with old seals, but im not sure cuz it does last some time. hehehe
Lol, yeah I am not sure why my car has 20w-50 in it. Probably a leak that I wasn't told about maybe, I dunno. Stupid Wal-Mart...here's the message they posted in the oil section of the store: "The oil in the boxing day flyer has not arrived yet"...son of a ******. I drove all the way up there for nothing. I did get some washer fluid for $1.75 so that's not bad.
