So in the cold weather we have been having, my car has started to make this noise again until it warms up. It makes almost a scraping noise back drivers side of the engine bay. Also when sitting with the brakes on for more than 10 seconds it begins to make a loud rattling noise inside the cabin coming from the back rightish area. Anyone have any ideas as to the source of these?

    Auto or manual?
Engine bay sound is probably a worn engine mount, get underneath and check/adjust them.

Rear noise could be the exhaust/bootlid/speaker pod/spare wheel/jack etc, start it,
sit in the back and trace it

Sounds like the motor isn't idling very smoothly, needs tune-up?

    what he said
i bet its ur exhaust rattling.
ur motor is shaking a lot at idle and causing a bunch of rattling

its a five speed, Ill have to look for at the engine mounts when i put it up to fix the front valence. Exhaust was my guess, engine seems to run smooth, its weird that i have to have to be pressing on the brakes for it to rattle.

when u press ur brakes ur idle should drop a little and maybe thats causing the increase in the motor shaking

Exactly. Some RPMs make some things resonant in the car, while other things are not affected. I think this part of it is definitely the idle dropping, but it might be something else if the drop is negligible. You know, if you didn't have power brakes this wouldn't be an issue ;-).

I had a rattling in my back end like yours whenever I was on the brakes. Drove me nuts crawling under the car looking for exhaust rattles. Turned out to be the rear hatch strut rubbing against the hatch itself. Previous owner had replaced it and it was slightly misaligned.
