i have this really strange engine noise, sounds as tho its a rubbing noise. i had a quick look at it this morning before work and it sounds like it could be coming from the belts on the side of the engine but it sounds more serious than that... maybe like metal rubbing on rubber or plastic or something

heres a vid of it that i took this morning:

it sounds WAY worse on the mobile vid cause of the shit quality of the sound... but it gives you a general idea of what it sounds like

Could be a worn belt tensioner.

IB crank pulley rubbing on the plastic mud guard. look at it from the wheel well....I bet you'll see the pulley rubbing through

    I'm with schmooot.

It's not high pitched enough to be a belt slipping.

i thought that coulda been it a while ago so i had a look and it has at some stage definately rubbed through it but i have checked again after i attached it properly and its clear from the pulley's...

would a worn belt make that noise??

I guess it's possible, but pretty doubtful.

Have you tried crawling under the car to listen already?

i listened to it, i think its a pulley gone bad...sounds like a worn bearing in a pulley...Sounds like sand???

Take the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand

i think we found the prob! i was showing a mate 2day and thats exactly what he said it was he thought... it does sound like shot bearings in one of the pulleys or more!

how expensive are they?? for a set of decent one that can handle more than standard ones...

    hahah what?

i took it down to the local mechanic and he said that its the timing belt cams, or pulleys or something? the bearings are either really REALLY dry or shot by now...

    thanks everyone for your help!

    Cam gears?

the cam gears for the timing belt. he said a can put a metal rod up to the different gears and the vibrations travelling through the rob will be a dead give away which one is the problem cam!

'i can only hope this works after i spend all the time removing everyhting to get the under the timing cover :)

buy a mechanics stethoscope...I've seen them for around $20....or if you're cheap like me you can use a stick....or a metal rod of some sort. It helps to pinpoint the noise. Once I bought one I use it regularly

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

i found the problem... that noise has given me NIGHTMARES!!

in the end it was the water pump... i started to suspect the pump after my car started leaking crazy amounts of coolant or water or what ever was put into the radiator...

so i booked the car into a friends mechanics and hes replacing the water pump, gaskets, seals, timing belt, tensioners, thermostat seals and gaskets, pulley's cams and basically everything else that can be replaced around that area that is or will and even MIGHT leak in the near future :p

im using all genuine toyota parts, they arent the cheapest things ever but i decided its best to go with toyota parts. there is one plus...basically free labor woohooo! :)

i get it back 2moz in my lunch break... cant wait to drive it without that effing annoying scraping sound!!!

went and picked my car up 2day! and oh my god does it feel better! its made such a difference hey. heres the list on the invoice of things they did to the celi in the workshop:

carried out 270 000 km service as per service schedule. changed engine oil and filter, cleaned air filter element, checked and topped up all fluid levels, checked all lights and accessories, checked and adjusted all tyre pressures, checked brakes and under body of vehicle. removed front of engine. replaced timing belt. replaced crank/cam seals, both idler pulleys and tensioned. replaced leaking oil pump. reassembled. drained flushed and refilled cooling system. replaced worn alternator belt and power steering belts. road tested vehicle. washed free of charge :)

cool huh... was real cheap too, considering all the things they tested and replaced and fixed and checked and all that...

conclusion: no more leaks or strange engine noises and much smoother and torque-y all round...
