First off, sorry this post is so long :hehe

Later this summer we are getting the wife a new car....that means that we are going to have an extra car for a while which means that i will have time to do a total overhaul since i will still have an extra car to get to and from work.

What i'm wondering is what all i will need. I've been looking at rebuilding the engine and i want to replace the transmission.

This is the rebuild kit I've been looking at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Camr...ruck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr#ht_4212wt_1037
Will I need to replace the Crank and Rods as well? I've never personally rebuilt a motor before but have helped in several of them. I'm assuming i should get the block machined....also should i replace the heads? I found this one on E bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-87-9...ruck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr#ht_2765wt_1037

Now onto the transmission. When i got this car it had a crap transmission in it. It had been seized up from being driven a long time with no lubrication whatsoever. so i replaced it with a junk yard trans. (I needed a car so i bought this one and did a quick fix.) Now this trans is grinding into 3rd and 5th....And is often times hard to get into gears.

I'm thinking of buying a rebuilt one unless they are fairly simple to rebuild. where is a good place to get a rebuilt tranny?

I want to keep everything stock, don't really care about adding a bunch of power, just want to keep my fuel economy. Any ideas or recommendations?

The rebuild kit looks okay but you really need to tear your engine appart before you do anything
to make sure the block is okay. If its warped you'll need to shave the block and then you'll need
an oversized head gasket to keep compression the same. If the cylinders arn't to bad you may
be able to just hone them otherwise they'll have to be over bored. The block also needs to be
checked for cracks and other damage.

Crank shaft and connecting rods should be okay but you need to know the size of each bearing
    before ordering your kit.

Why not just rebuild your head ? If not that one looks fine.

Below is an example of the numbers you need to find in order to get the correct bearings

For crankshaft bearings you need 2 sets of numbers 1 set of numbers is stamped on the crankshaft
    itself
    [IMG]

the second set of numbers is stamped on the block
    [IMG]

the locations of the 2 sets of numbers
    [IMG]

Crankshaft bearings are a bit more complicated and come in sizes 1,2,3,4,5
In my case the crankshaft is marked 10000
and the block is marked 22232

    12345 <----Bearing #

    10000 <----Crankshaft #
    22232 <----Block #
    ------
    32232 <----Crankshaft + Block #'s (add the 2 numbers together)

    Bearing # 1 is size 3
    Bearing # 2 is size 2
    Bearing # 3 is size 2
    Bearing # 4 is size 3
    Bearing # 5 is size 2

So you need to know all that before you order your rebuild kit and thats assumeing
the crank is okay and noting has to be reground and replaced with an oversized
    bearing.

So you really need to start by finding a good block and crank, once you know the
condition of those 2 things you can start ordering rebuilding parts.

As far as trannys are concerned I would probably look for one out of a newer 4
cylinder camry or celica or get yours rebuilt by a good shop that will give you a
    good waranty on their work.

My piston rings are going bad and it is burning oil pretty bad. Also when i bought it it was ran with almost NO oil and it was Blacker than hell. So i really want a fresh motor in this car.

How do i tell if i have 6 or 8 bolts on the crank? I.E. TBL3S8 or TBL3S6

Does anybody in the Puget Sound area know of any good machine shops to get the block done if i need it?

Also how do i check for warping and cracks?

What transmission do i need? is it the S53? New camrys have the same trans?

Thanks again for all the help.

No offense but the way I'd do it is to buy a cheap later model 5S-FE, do it up in the meantime and then swap them complete.
I hear the US later model Camry's also have much improved exhaust headers besides the better heads, cams, pistons.
The 5S is far more common and easier, cheaper to buy spares for -
You could then keep your motor spare or flog it as a runner.

You need to pull the clutch to see if it's 6 or 8 bolt

You need a FWD box from a "S" series engine, the latest Camry's have different engines (2,4l) and boxes and so does the Cavalier.
You could even use one from a V6 Camry or Solara but they are scarce and expensive.
If I had the cash, a recon would always be the best option - you can't beat new syncros and selector rings.

just depends on what you want to do or spend. a used jdm engine is cheaper than all the machine work plus parts and kits. i know cause ive done it both ways. the cool thing about a used jdm would be that you could swap in something else and a newer 5sfe is probably pretty cheap, but may need some creative wiring. im always game to help. said and done i think the jdm was $1k with all new seals ect. the rebuild i spent more than that at the machine shop alone.

-the used jdm i bought was better than i thought. youd never know the difference between that one and the rebuild im running now.

I dont have much money at the moment so buying something now would be out of the money. However things are looking up starting in the next month (wife is starting her job). I still dont think i want to do any "Creative wiring" as jwagner162 put it. I was thinking maybe something like this...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-88-9...es&vxp=mtr&hash=item27bfcb3767#ht_3425wt_1037 then i dont have to have the down time while i rebuild, and I know everything is done right. any recommendations on the transmission? any trans from ans S series engine will work?? what are the differences between them if any....which ones are the best?
