I want to change the tranny fuild to GM synchro mesh as a lot of good stories have been told about it, and the unknown age of oil in my current box its probay a good idea to change it anways. Whats the procedure for changing tranny fuild? How much do it need ect.

My way, although prob a little bit messy, was to drop the prop off, jack the car up and let it drain out. the using a length of tube and a gravity fed funnel fill it back up so that it was level with the filler opening and just starting to come out ( do this with car on the level.

You can also syringe it out using a big syringe and tube, but I always worried that this way left bits in it.

( I am sure that there is probably a better way lol that does not mean you smell of fluid for days on end )

hum, I got little lost there, drop the prop off? Is it possible to syphen it out of the trans? or more convenient, a drain plug?

p.s. Can synchromesh simply be added to the trans without any drain, i read that somewhere.

Is it ment to be added to the ATF or Run 100%, or can it be eather or?

LOL, Sorry, I completly forgot I have a Prop on the 165, and 162s dont... Not with it today.

I am not sure if there is a drain plug on your Gearbox, will have a look up. If not then a big medical syringe works great at sucking up the fluid and his cheap.

Not sure re adding the additive, I do know over filling a gear box can give problems.

Sorry Meph not really helping here much am I??

    It's pretty straightforward.
Jack the car up on all fours so that it's level. All you do is remove the drain plug near the bottom of the tranny and let it all run out. Fill via the front facing fill hole until it's level or just until it leaks out - that means it's full and that's the right level. You can use a suction gun (about $9) to pump in the tranny fluid.

In the pic below, you can see the drain plug just left of the prybar shaft:

I edited my pic to avoid confusion
The drain and fill plugs are big, IIRC, about 24mm or so...

What smaller bolt are you referring to?
I think it's worth DIY, what does your mechanic charge?

the smaller bolt holds some retainer for 5th and reverse, so yes. removing that bolt will cause a trip to a tranny guy.
