That article only applies to North America, the rest of us see it very differently and frankly Toyota didn't need to compete with American steel.
There's an ad here saying that Toyota has been no1 in NZ for 25yrs - co-incidence that that co-incides with the release of the gen4?
I'd like to see a new Celica too, but I think legends need to die in order to become legends

I hear talk of a new MR2 model on the cards as well

I agree the world has changed completely over the last 2 decades and fully expect to see F1/NASCAR/INDY running diesel power and then battery power in the near future.

My Celi reminds me of happier, carefree times, and it always will.....

Yep good article but I'd say the demise of their sports cars will ultimately lead to the decline of toyota.
Toyota is no longer atracting the young buyer, and all manufacturers are now making quality cars. So
Toyota really doesn't have any advantage over other manufacturers any more and their loyal buyers
    are getting older.

I think they've taken a huge gamble making "green" cars which are selling well to the politically correct and now going the other way with a MR2 and 86.

I think in Asia they sell more Estima's and in Africa the Hi-ace is king

I don't know about that, the motoring journo's over here said pretty much the same things when Toyota canned the three sportys; that the MR2 had become an over-priced, underpowered, and incredibly ugly anachronism, that the Supra was just too old to find buyers (because who would pay serious money for a new sports car that looked exactly like a 10-year old used one that could have been bought for a fraction of the cost??), and that they had priced the Celica out of the market. The 7th-gen Celica and the Corolla of the day shared the same motor (albeit de-tuned for the Corolla), the Corolla was 100kg heavier than the Celica, and I remember being amused that while 100kg of ANYTHING costs a fair chunk of change, they could sell the Corolla for a whole $10,000 less. Didn't make sense.
