Does anyone know how I can set the timing belt to the correct tension? Do I need a special tool or can it be estimated?

timing belt is already tentioned when you latch the spring for the idler pully. What up.

I thought that only applied to drivebelts. The tensioner pulley should do all the tensioning for the timing belt

Got it together. Sorry guys... been busy.

Check out all the problems I encountered during this mess:
-crankshaft pulley bolt on so hard that I had to tow it to our mechanic
-broken bolt in pulley during attempts at removal, had to buy a screw remover
-didn't have long sockets to remove motor mount, had to buy those
-didn't have a good enough torque wrench so I snapped a bolt in the water pump, had to rethread and put in a bigger bolt

in total, probably 4 or 5 trips to the store and 2 trips to the mechanic

Next time, I'm leaving this shit to the professionals...

    FE or GE?
    How do you check tension?
Are you locking the adjuster down?
1 tooth on the crank or cam?

omg!!! the exact same thing happens to me and my engine keeps knocking like mad!!! anybody know how to fix this? i had a new timing belt only 8000 miles ago also and it only slips on the exahust pully.. but my tensioner is getting noisy now also....i was thinking, could it be the spring???

Sorry, I can't help if you don't answer the questions

    No a spring can't make a noise
Sounds like you forgot to tighten the tensioner and the spring is loose
Adjust the belt tension and tighten the bolt in the picture - the belt can't move as you describe
