Hi, I recently bought a 86 GT-S for $700 and it drives pretty good except for one problem. about 40% of the time the transmission will get stuck in reverse and I either have to back up to get it into neutral or roll forward and pop the clutch. I don't suspect the clutch is an issue as it has less than 1000 miles on it, I'm guessing the shift cables?

Check cables, shift bushes (MR2, Camry, Corona, Corolla are the same)and the little square bush at the gearbox end.
(It moves the selector in-out) Usually these are worn, turn it 90 deg and make sure it's all greased.

With the cables off - move the levers by hand and try to engage gears - may indicate a problem with the selector inside the box.
If it's stiff in other gears I suggest an oil change to 80w-90

Might be worth checking the nylon cups on the gearlever too, if they go dry or dirty the nylon will go in no time
They should be stuck on like the one on the left

There is also an adjuster, usually only used when the gearlever is floppy but if it's too tight will stop the lever in some gears.
