starting problems

Discussion in 'Diagnosis/Help' started by draztik_celica, Nov 26, 2007.

  1. everytime i start my car first thing in the morning, it does not start right away. i have to crank the engine for about 7 seconds, and crank it again to start.

but after starting and driving for a while, if i turn off my car and start it again, it's no problem.

need help here. what's wrong with my car? i think im loosing some pressure.

    thanks in advance...

you might have uyr tvis disconnect in various places, or u could have a leak on ur intake, OR just need a heavy service ur injectors could be clogged, ru intake dirty or ur ignition system is toast. or barely going.

    when was the last service?

  3. injectors are fine. the air intake is clean. i don't think the ignition system is toast. the starter has no problem. it's just that when the car has been sitting for 2 to 3 hours after driving. it takes a long time to start. but after that, when i shut the car down and start for about 30 mins, it starts fine.

i've searched the web about this problem, and the majority of the people said that im loosing some kind of pressure. the fuel pump is i believe its fine because the car starts.

Doubt that is where its at, although that is a possible as the system looses pressure eventually.

Have you messed with the timing at all?

is the car turning over or is it just dead...no sound...and then it finally turns over? could possibly be electrical. that is usually my first guess on everything. shoot for the worst and hope for the best. starter? cold start? alternator? battery? terminals?

  6. i did not mess with the timing. i just had a timing belt replaced.

car turns over. battery is cold. i doubt it's not a cold start. alternator is 100% ok. starter is fine. it just feel that it's loosing pressure but i don't know how or where to start.

check the timing then. sounds like you may be a tooth off.

My car does this sometimes as well. Cranks for 5-10 sec with no firing at all, then fires right up on the next try. I was told it was fuel drain back, a slow leak in the fuel system allowing the pressure to bleed off when the car is parked. So there is no gas for the first little while.

I don't remember what needs to be fixed, but I remember it being something difficult enough that living with the problem was a better choice.

ever tryed pumping the gas, while cranking, tap the gas pedal rapidly and kinda spacticaly lol and it should start , i had to do that after i put throttlebody cleaner through it , then again in this topic im probaly lost and saying aload of crap :D

  10. dman is right we have the same situation... slow leak?

how much is it to repair?

well if this does not harm our engine, might as well leave it as is.

i tried pumping the gas pedal but it didn't work.

Did you have the cold starting problem before the timing belt was replaced ? Or has it started since then.

sounds like it needs to build fuel pressure to me

Pumping the gas on a FI system does NOTHING.

Either floor it, or nothing at all.

#####-##### Toyota Part Numbers are for an 88 All-Trac
    23801H 90430-08005 Gasket (For Fuel Pipe) $0.80
23270B 90430-12005 Gasket (For Pulsation Damper Hose) $0.69
23232 23232-41081 Gasket (For Fuel Pump Hose) $1.37
    23250B 90301-07001 Ring, O (For Fuel Injector) $2.15
    23250C 90480-13005 Grommet (For Fuel Injector) $2.34
    23300T 90430-12005 Gasket (For Fuel Filter) $0.69

I'm not sure if 23250C plays a part in sealing the injector or not.
23250B O' Rings are probably the most likely cause and I've also underlined some other gaskets that should be replaced if the bolt they are on is removed.

So it can be relatively cheap to fix a leaky Fuel Injection System if you provide the labor but your going to be pulling out a shitload of crap to get at the fuelrail and the injectors under it.

Of cource there are other possibilities too. One of the hoses or fuel lines may have a pin hole or one of the hose clamps may be loose/missing.

My Supra has a replacement fuel pump in it and it should have a 1 way valve in it so fuel can only flow out the pump but it doesn't so when the car is shut of for very long I loose the fuel pressure in the system because it flows the wrong way back through the pump.

I can't see how that would be the problem unless you're losing a LOT of pressure... I mean I replaced my entire gas lines and just rubber hosed the ends together....and I've never had problems starting because of that....

well technically on a 4th gen you have no fuel flow until you crank it and it is a return system so it would not hold pressure. perhaps that is the issue and if it is the only way te fix it is to rewire the curcuit opening relay with a switch to ground (and yes it needs to be on a switch, what happens if you get in an accident?)

    Well......... NO  Sorry :hail:

It is a pressurized system from the fuel pump all the way to the fuel pressure regulator which is right before the fuel return line so the only part of the system that is not pressurized (even with the car turned off) is the fuel return line.
