Yes the 20 year old beast is felling her age- Alright the starter is acting up. 1st when I try to crank it it turns and engages- But it dosent feel like its trying to spin the flywheel- Now I went a replaced the starter and it does the same thing- Ive checked all the wiring and connections.... I have also done the Starter fix- any Ideas????
this is a very common celica thing you are going to have to just rewire the starter with a relay to your ignition, the little wire on the starter that is the one connected to your ignition has lost powersomwhere along the line and dosnt have enough juice to jump the circuit. if you put a jump wire from your battery to the small wire on the starter it should crank everytime. you need to buy just a regular headlight relay, have a bunch of wire and undo the bottom plastic piece under your column find all the wires connected to your ignition theresa white-(constant 12 volt) starter-(black white) ignition-(black orange) accessory-(blue red) you need to run a wire from the black white to under the hood hook it on the relay. a wire from the pos battery terminal, a neg battery terminal, also from the relay a wire direct to the small wire on your starter, the relay wiring chart from the internet or auto parts store it really easy and the relay is olny about 4 bucks.
hey i might have this mod on my car. i have the dash out to do the stereo and have found a little switch and a relay that looks like it shouldnt be there on the driver side. pics will be up tomorrow.
I have already done the Starter Mod- Its been working fine for 2 years- Its not the mod the Starter engages when the key is turned and I can feel it trying to start the car for 2 seconds but then it just starts to spin like zzzzz /??- It dosent seem to be getting to the Flywheel, That the problem...Hmm do youthink I have lost some flywheel teeth??
It feels like it is turning the flywheel for the first to revoultions of the starter(when you try and start the car it goes . . . . the first 2) and then it just spins.
Ive only changed a Timing belt with the engine out- I never had to replace with the engine still in the car.....
hey how did you take your cover off to inspect the belt? sorry i have never done that before. i appreciate the help. and sorry for jacking the thread
I just checked the cams- Just remove the spark plug wires and grab a pair of pliers, undo the nut looking seals and remove the gasket underneath them- pry the Valve cover up and have someone try to start the car- If the cams dont move the belt is broken. But to inspect it - http://www.celicatech.com/imagearchive/ ... /EM/EM.htm Go over the BGB dosent seem to difficult ill be trying very soon!
He's referring to the timing belt cover and yes, there are bolts you have to remove to take that cover off.
MIT before u assume, recharge ur battery. I had a similar problem and all i did was charge my battery.
Oh No its not an assumption- I have removed the over and turned the crank and the belt, Cam gears are not moving- And for te Side cover- those bolts are a pita to take off- I think the BGB Pages are for when the engine is out of the vehicle- cause theres noway in hell to remove the bolts from the side cover.... :?
o that just sucks. Good thing it doesn't matter on our engines if the tbelt snaps. BTW, most people leave the bottom rear most bolt out so its easier to take the cover off in the bay.

Perhaps ypu could walk us through the removal of the upper cover ST165? I couldnt get at some of the bolts.... Dont want to remove the brake booster either, its in the way a bit on a RHD car....
Ive actually heard the GTS Timing belt is a easier fix than the GT but the remains to be seen. The top cover is the easiest to remove- Just remove the right engine mount and hoist or jack the engine up, and you can access all the bolts to the top cover- The bottum is an issue, I was literally thinking of cutting most of the wheelhouse section off the right front- just for this reason, Can you imagine just taking off he right front wheel and having access to change the Water pump, Timing belt, Pulleys without having to to pry and pull till your back hurts !!! The main issue I have is the pulley- I dont have the pulley tools, our the money for the parts our the tools- I guess thats a lose lose situation !!!
